We report a series of 5 representative patients in California who experienced adverse reactions from the illicitly marketed substance gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB). The drug is a putative neurotransmitter marketed as a growth hormone releaser for bodybuilders. The most commonly reported symptoms included abrupt drowsiness, dizziness, and a "high". Other effects were headache, nausea, vomiting, myoclonic jerking, and short-term coma. There have been no reported deaths. In this study we investigated how ophiophagous snakes are able to ingest prey snakes that equal or exceed their own length. We used X-ray video, standard video, dissection, and still X-rays to document the process of ophiophagy in kingsnakes (Lampropeltis getula) feeding on corn snakes (Elaphe guttata). Most kingsnakes readily accepted the prey snakes, subdued them by constriction, and swallowed them head first. BACKGROUND: Stroke databanks may provide important information regarding regional and temporal variations in the causes of stroke.
METHODS: Five hundred consecutive patients presenting to the University of California, San Diego, stroke services with acute ischemic stroke were evaluated prospectively. A specific cause of stroke was assigned in each case according to predetermined diagnostic criteria.
RESULTS: Relative incidences of ischemic stroke causes were as follows: lacunar, 27%; unknown cause, 23%; cardioembolic, 22%; large-vessel atherothrombotic/embolic, 18%; and miscellaneous, 10%.

The number of cases of coccidioidomycosis and associated hospitalizations increased in California during 2000-2013. During that period, a total of 1,098 death records listed coccidioidomycosis as a cause, averaging 78 deaths annually (range: 43-108). BACKGROUND: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a safe and effective treatment for actinic keratoses (AKs) and photoactinic damage. Three elements are needed for PDT: a photosensitizer, oxygen, and a light source. Conventional PDT is performed with a variety of different laser and light sources including blue, yellow and red in addition to filtered intense pulsed lights (IPL). Daylight PDT, using ambient visible light has been reported as safe, time- and cost-efficient, and more comfortable than with other light sources. We report our experience with daylight PDT in 80 patients.

Hispanics in California are more likely to be infected with hepatitis C, and those infected have had their infection detected later. A total of 1,567 Hispanic and Caucasian individuals were tested for antibodies to hepatitis C from 2000 through 2013. Interviewers administered the Risk Behavior Assessment. Hepatitis C-infected Hispanics were incarcerated longer than hepatitis C-infected Caucasians, and they used marijuana less and illicit methadone more.
