Carcinosarcomas of the bile ducts are very rare tumors. Their diagnosis and management remain difficult. We here report the case of a patient in whom the diagnosis was suspected due to cholestatic jaundice associated with a deterioration in general condition. Biologically, bilirubin, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) levels were elevated. Imaging showed a tumor in the head of the pancreas. Surgical exploration, tumor biopsy and anatomo-immunohistochemical study confirmed the biliary origin. The purpose of our case report is to highlight the difficulties in diagnos…

A 51-year-old woman visited our hospital after being diagnosed with ascites effusion by her previous physician due to weight gain for 6 months. Ascites cytology showed adenocarcinoma, MRI showed an omental cake, and CT showed neoplastic lesions in the umbilicus and pancreas. Laparoscopy revealed that the omentum had been replaced by a tumor. Biopsies of the omentum and umbilicus revealed a carcinosarcoma. Treatment with paclitaxel and carboplatin was unsuccessful, and the patient's general condition deteriorated, leading to her demise. Pathological autopsy revealed carcinosarcoma of peritoneal…

Carcinosarcoma is a biphasic malignant tumor composed of both carcinomatous and sarcomatous components. First cited in 1951 [1], there have been few cases of this malignant mixed tumor described in the literature. The typical patient presentation is that of an enlarging facial mass in the area of the parotid gland. Systemic symptoms are often absent. Time to initial presentation ranges from months to years. Physical examination findings include swelling and enlargement in the area of the parotid gland, facial nerve deficits, and possible cervical lymphadenopathy. Routine laboratory values (eg,…

Carcinosarcoma of the urinary bladder is a rare neoplasm that is histologically composed of malignant epithelial and mesenchymal components. The etiology of sarcomatoid tumors is unclear, but smoking and history of previous radiotherapy or chemotherapy may lead to bladder disorders and to the formation of sarcomatoid carcinoma. These neoplasms behave as highly aggressive tumors and optimal treatment is uncertain. Herein, we report a case of sarcomatoid carcinoma of urinary bladder presenting as a giant intravesical mass in a 61-year-old man complaining of macroscopic hematuria.

INTRODUCTION: Carcinosarcoma is a highly malignant tumor characterized by dual malignant histologic differentiation of epithelial and mesenchymal components. The tumor is extremely rare in the sinonasal tract, with only 13 cases reported since 1957 in the literature.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: We report a case of a 55-year-old man with right-sided face pain revealed a mass in the right maxillary sinus and nasal cavity. A large incisional biopsy from the nasal cavity concluded the diagnosis of carcinosarcoma. The patient was treated with chemoradiation, but no significant effect was obtained. The p…

OBJECTIVE: Uterine carcinosarcoma (CS) is an aggressive malignancy and the optimal adjuvant treatment is not well-established. We report outcomes with vaginal brachytherapy (VB) for women with early-stage CS.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: A multi-institutional retrospective study of Stage I-II CS treated with hysterectomy, surgical staging, and adjuvant high-dose-rate VB without external-beam pelvic radiotherapy was performed. Rates of vaginal control, pelvic control, locoregional control, disease-free survival, and overall survival were determined using the Kaplan-Meier method.
RESULTS: 33 patient…

Carcinosarcoma, also known as mixed mesodermal tumor or malignant mixed Mullerian tumor (MMMT) is a pathological entity combining a sarcomatous and a carcinomatous component. Found in thoracic, digestive, genitourinary, liver or skin locations, the most common location is the female genital tract. In gynecological tumors, carcinosarcoma accounts for about 2-5% of endometrial cancers, and 1% of ovarian cancers. To date, there is no consensus on the therapeutic strategy. It relies mostly on maximum cytoreductive surgery. Adjuvant therapy remains controversial, and few prospective studies investi…

Carcinosarcoma of the urinary bladder is a rare neoplasm that is composed of malignant epithelial and mesenchymal components. In these tumors, histogenesis and biological behaviour remain controversial. Approximately 70 cases have been reported in the literature, usually as case reports or a small series. A series of 221 cases using the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) Program database has been reported recently. Optimal treatment is uncertain. Herein, we report a case of sarcomatoid carcinoma of urinary bladder of a farmer aged 84 years old with a year history of hematuria an…

Cervical carcinosarcomas are rare neoplasms that aggressively progress and belong to the histological group of mixed tumors with both epithelial and mesenchymal components (malignant mixed Müllerian tumors). At diagnosis, most patients present with vaginal bleeding and a palpable cervical mass. Given the rarity of this neoplasm, there is no consensus regarding the management of these patients and should be approached on a case-by-case basis, taking into consideration the clinical and pathological features of the tumor. The authors describe a woman with mesonephric cervical carcinosarcoma and r…

Oesophageal carcinosarcoma is a rare type of oesophageal cancer composed of both squamous cells and sarcomatous cells. We report a case of a 71 year old man presenting with dysphagia and weight loss. Oesophagogastroduodenoscopy revealed a bulky mass with a preliminary diagnosis of only oesophageal carcinoma, and the oesophageal mass was resected with a transhiatal oesophagectomy. On surgical pathology, it was discovered that the tumor had both squamous cell and sarcomatous cell components, and the final diagnosis was changed to oesophageal carcinosarcoma. We discuss the presentation, different…

Adrenocortical carcinosarcoma is an extremely rare and aggressive variant of adrenocortical carcinoma characterized by the presence of both carcinomatous and sarcomatous components, with the latter often showing heterologous differentiation. Due to the rarity and unusual histology, it may pose a diagnostic challenge. In order to increase awareness and identify potential diagnostic pitfalls, we report the ninth case of non-functioning adrenocortical carcinosarcoma in a 45-year-old man who presented with worsening epigastric pain and a left large retroperitoneal mass in close proximity to the bo…

Carcinosarcomas are relatively rare tumors composed of both carcinomatous and sarcomatous components. The most common sites involved by this tumor are the head and neck, respiratory tract, uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes. Within the gastrointestinal tract this tumor most often occurs in the esophagus, followed by the stomach. Carcinosarcomas are very aggressive tumors associated with a poor prognosis. The first case of carcinosarcoma of the colon was reported in 1986. The case reported here is the only one involving an associated colovesical fistula.

Carcinosarcoma is a rare tumor of the uterus with a poor prognosis. We present a case of uterine carcinosarcoma in an 82-year-old woman who suffered from pervaginal bleeding for ten months duration with progressive anemia. Abdominopelvic nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) imaging showed the presence of an intrauterine mass, infiltrating the myometrium and reaching the cervix. The patient was submitted to total abdominal hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy. The carcinosarcoma, arising from the lumen of the uterus, infiltrated the inner one-third of the myometrial layer (pT1b, pNx, p…

Paraneoplastic syndromes are a collection of disorders affecting an organ or tissue caused by cancer but occurring at a site distant from the primary or metastases. Dermatomyositis can occur in association with malignancy as a paraneoplastic phenomenon. We present a case of a patient presenting simultaneously with an advanced carcinosarcoma of the uterus and dermatomyositis. The diagnoses, pathophysiology and treatment of these two conditions are discussed and current published studies reviewed.

No more than 11 cases of carcinosarcoma of the liver have been reported in the past 40 years that fulfill the definition of hepatocellular carcinoma combined with differentiated sarcomatous elements. Most cases consist of hepatocellular carcinoma with 1 to 2 heterologous elements. We report a case of a 51-year-old woman with liver carcinosarcoma consisting of 3 carcinomatous components and 4 sarcomatous components. Hepatocellular carcinoma, fibrolamellar type, was accompanied by neuroendocrine carcinoma (neuron-specific enolase and synaptophysin positive) and adenocarcinoma (cytokeratin 7 and …

AIM: To examine histological nature and clinical process of ureteral carcinosarcomas.
METHODS: We report on a new case of carcinosarcoma of the ureter. The literature was reviewed and histological and clinical features were elucidated.
RESULTS: Fourteen cases of ureteral carcinosarcomas have been reported. The nomenclature used for these tumors either in the pathology reports or in literature is confusing. In contrary to obscure tumor biology, prognosis was clearly bad as the majority of the patients died within 2 years after diagnosis.
CONCLUSIONS: Terminology confusion is due to the rarit…

We report a case of carcinosarcoma in the transverse colon in a 60-year-old woman. She was admitted to our hospital for further examination of occult blood in October, 1995. Colonoscopy disclosed an elevated lesion with ulceration in the transverse colon, and she underwent right hemicolectomy. Histopathological examination revealed the tumor to consist of both carcinomatous and sarcomatous elements, the latter being more predominant. Immunohistochemistry revealed vimentin immunoreactivity in most of the sarcomatous cells, and S-100 and myoglobin in a few carcinomatous cells. Distinct carcinoma…
