Construction and in vitro testing of a cellulose dura mater graft.

INTRODUCTION: Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks are a common complication after cranial and spinal surgery and are associated with increased morbidity. Despite continuous research in this field, this problem is far from solved. In this paper, we describe the construction and testing of a bacterial cellulose (BC) membrane as a new dural patch. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The synthesis of BC was performed using Gluconacetobacter hansenii (ATCC 23769) and films were sterilized by autoclaving. The membranes were seeded with human dural fibroblasts. Growth, shape, and cell viability were assessed after 4…

Genotoxic and inflammatory effects of nanofibrillated cellulose in murine lungs.

Nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) is a sustainable and renewable nanomaterial, with diverse potential applications in the paper and medical industries. As NFC consists of long fibres of high aspect ratio, we examined here whether TEMPO-(2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-piperidin-1-oxyl) oxidised NFC (length 300-1000nm, thickness 10-25nm), administrated by a single pharyngeal aspiration, could be genotoxic to mice, locally in the lungs or systemically in the bone marrow. Female C57Bl/6 mice were treated with four different doses of NFC (10, 40, 80 and 200 µg/mouse), and samples were collected 24h later. DNA d…

Catalytic conversion of cellulose to levulinic acid by metal chlorides.

The catalytic performance of various metal chlorides in the conversion of cellulose to levulinic acid in liquid water at high temperatures was investigated. The effects of reaction parameters on the yield of levulinic acid were also explored. The results showed that alkali and alkaline earth metal chlorides were not effective in conversion of cellulose, while transition metal chlorides, especially CrCl(3), FeCl(3) and CuCl(2) and a group IIIA metal chloride (AlCl(3)), exhibited high catalytic activity. The catalytic performance was correlated with the acidity of the reaction system due to the …

Antifungal and antibacterial properties of a silver-loaded cellulosic fiber.

The skin is the interface between the body and the environment. Each skin type has a specific skin physiology and is more or less adapted for protection against multiple stress factors. Textiles on the other hand are the tissues with the longest contact to the human skin. They play a critical role especially in skin conditions with an increased rate of bacterial and fungal infections like atopic dermatitis and hyperhidrosis, and in diabetic patients and aged skin. The present study demonstrates the antifungal and antibacterial effects of SeaCell Active in an in vitro test system against Candid

Sitosterol-beta-glucoside as primer for cellulose synthesis in plants.

Cellulose synthesis in plants requires beta-1,4-glucan chain initiation, elongation, and termination. The process of chain elongation is likely to be distinct from the process of chain initiation. We demonstrate that a CesA glucosyltransferase initiates glucan polymerization by using sitosterol-beta-glucoside (SG) as primer. Cotton fiber membranes synthesize sitosterol-cellodextrins (SCDs) from SG and uridine 5'-diphosphate-glucose (UDP-Glc) under conditions that also favor cellulose synthesis. The cellulase encoded by the Korrigan (Kor) gene, required for cellulose synthesis in plants, may fu…

The design of cellulosic based membranes that do not activate complement.

Complement is a principal mediator of the acute inflammatory response that works by nonspecific recognition mechanisms to eliminate foreign … tes bind less C3b and thus generate lower levels of convertase activity. This is exemplified by the Cellulose Triacetate membrane that is produced by exhaustive acetylation of surface hydroxyl groups. This membrane binds only a third of the amount of C3b that a cuprophan membrane will bind. An alternative means of affecting convertase activity can occur by …

[Specific activity of thiamine and oxythiamine immobilized on modified cellulose].

The effect of thiamine and oxythiamine preparations on the activities of vitamin B1-dependent enzymes in the body of white mice was studied. It was found that the cellulose oxythiamine derivative was similar to the initial compound in the character and intensity of its antivitamin action. It was also shown that the cellulose thiamine derivative had a prolonged effect in the body, which was manifested in a slower increase in the activities of transketolase, pyruvate dehydrogenase and in the amount of thiamine diphosphate in tissues of vitamin B1-deficient animals, as compared to the effect of t…

Role of carboxymethyl cellulose, cellulose nano fiber, and essential oils in semi- and full-hybridization of electrospun PVA-based films for food packaging application.

Developing novel packaging materials contributes to a healthier lifestyle and a greener planet. In this study, the nanofibrous polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-based films were synthesized by electrospinning to be employed in the food package application. The semi-hybridized and fully hybridized films were synthesized by incorporation of the carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), pectin (PEC), cellulose nano fiber, black seed oil (BSO), and myrtle essential oil (MEO). The microstructure studies revealed that the average diameter size of fibers was decreased by semi- and full-hybridization, 98 and 137 nm, respe…

CSLF6 Mediates Cadmium Accumulation in Rice by Modulating Cellulose Synthesis.

Cadmium (Cd) pollution severely limits rice growth and yield. The plant cell wall acts as the first barrier against Cd, but how cell wall biosynthesis affects Cd accumulation is unclear. This study found that CSLF6, a cellulose synthase-like F, is involved in cellulose synthesis and Cd accumulation. Cd treatment strongly induced CSLF6 expression in roots. Under Cd stress, cell wall thickness and cellulose content were increased by CSLF6 overexpression and decreased when CSLF6 was mutated. CSLF6 overexpression enhanced Cd tolerance, with higher Cd accumulation in roots and shoots. In contrast, …

Kombucha Bacterial Cellulose Obtained from Tea Fermentation for Biomedical Applications.

The symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast (SCOBY) driving kombucha tea fermentation produces a cellulose pellicle with remarkable promise for biomedical applications. Unlike well-studied bacterial cellulose (BC), which is produced by single-strain cultures, the underexplored kombucha-derived bacterial cellulose (KBC) can be produced from agro-industrial waste streams and at low capital cost. This review provides an overview of the great potential of KBC for biomedical applications. First, discussions on the cooperative interactions between bacterial and yeast species within the SCOBY consort…

Multifunctional Cellulose Nanofiber Films With Embedded Highly Oriented MXene Flakes.

Ultrathin transparent photonic films that are simultaneously robust, cytocompatible, and actively antimicrobial remain rare. Here, the critical physical properties of freestanding micrometer-thick films composed of layered cellulose nanofibers intercalated with Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheets (CNF-MXene) are established. Correlated co-alignment of MXene flakes with near-perfect in-plane order is achieved in the cellulose nanofiber matrix by vacuum-assisted filtration. The Herman's orientation parameter of MXene nanosheets reaches up to 0.94, approaching the theoretical limit of 1.0 for perfect orient…

N-Glycoproteomics Sample Preparation Using Commercially Available Cellulose Magnetic Particles.

Glycopeptide preparation is a critical step in bottom-up glycoproteomics. In this study, a robust method for N-glycopeptide preparation was developed using low-cost, commercially available magnetic particles. These particles function as a solid phase for hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC) to enrich N-glycopeptides from mixtures of N-glycopeptides and non-glycosylated peptides. Two types of magnetic particles, carboxylated polymer beads and cellulose resin, were compared. The latter demonstrated higher efficiency in N-glycopeptide recovery and non-glycopeptide removal. Biolog…

PLA/gelatin/ethyl cellulose nanofiber: performance optimization and strawberry preservation.

BACKGROUND: As the demand for eco-friendly food packaging rises, biodegradable electrospun fiber membranes have attracted wide attention. However, existing single-component membranes face limitations such as insufficient mechanical properties, unstable functional release, and weak antioxidant/antibacterial activity. This work innovatively created a polylactic acid (PLA)/gelatin/ethyl cellulose ternary electrospun fiber membrane (PEG) by encasing low-cost citric acid (CA) and vitamin E/hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (VE/HP-β-CD) complexes to enhance functionality and stability. RESULTS: Scanning…
