We reviewed 1440 MRA studies to identify patients with middle cerebral artery stenosis (MCAS). We identified 99 cases, and after reviewing the clinical records, classified 28 as asymptomatic MCAS (AMCAS), a prevalence of 2%. Suspected stroke was the most frequent indication for MRA. Follow-up was available for 21, mean 46.7 months (range 2.4-75.6 months). One stroke occurred in the AMCAS territory (5%), other strokes in five patients (24%). There were five deaths in patients with MCAS; age > 69 (P = 0.045) was the only associated risk factor. This study suggests that patients in whom MRA is pe

Neurologically based clinical grading scales offer excellent prognostic information for the patient suffering diffuse subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). These grading scales are less applicable to patients with life-threatening intraparenchymal hematomas after aneurysmal rupture. During the last 3 years, four patients in a comatose state with brain stem compression syndromes documented by computed tomographic scans have undergone emergent operation in our neurosurgical service. Each patient was so critically ill that we believed it unwise to delay craniotomy for diagnostic angiography. The average

In addition to static brain images, cerebral radionuclide angiograms (CRAGs) were performed in 1,051 children to determine the value of routine radionuclide angiography. The CRAG resulted in a statistically significant increase in detection of abnormalities (p less than 0.01), as it provided the only evidence of confirmed abnormalities in 60 children (5.7%). The CRAG helped detect subdural fluid collections, cerebrovascular disease, and cerebral cysts, but it was of little value in detecting hydrocephalus. For maximum diagnostic yield, a CRAG should be performed with all pediatric brain-imagin

We report the case of a child with Moyamoya disease during a cerebral angiography procedure in which the effects of propofol on the cerebral perfusion were seen to be different compared with isoflurane. We suggest propofol was associated with a better preservation of cerebral circulation compared to isoflurane in this case of Moyamoya, as it maintained blood supply to the watershed areas.

BACKGROUND: Intra-aortic foreign body (IAFB) is uncommon, which is usually caused by a rupture of the catheter or guidewire. IAFB can cause … rebral infarctions.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 50-year-old man experienced new cerebral infarction after cerebral angiography. Computed tomography and echocardiography demonstrated foreign bodies in his ascending aorta and aortic arch. Open surgery was successfully performed to retrieve the guidewires. The postoperation and follow-up was uneventful.
CONCLUSION: It is very …

Results: A total of 88 patients underwent ambulatory diagnostic cerebral angiography during the 15-month observation period; of these, 40 (45%) participated in a telephone interview. This study reports 10 aneurysms found in the bifurcation of the middle cerebral arteries (MCA) of seven patients, diagnosed by computed tomography angiography (CTA) and confirmed by digital subtraction angiography and surgery. Six of the 10 aneurysms bled and caused subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH): the SAH was predominant in the Sylvian fissure where the aneurysms located. Eight aneurysms had a saccular pattern, while two had a fusiform pattern. Nine aneurysms were larger than 8 mm and were easily detected by CTA, while one aneurysm was 6 mm in diameter and was missed initially. It was found, ho

Experimental subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) induces an acute transient cerebral vasospasm. The goal of this study was to compare angiography with iterative measurements of regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) by the microsphere technique for tracking acute cerebral vasospasm after SAH. Cerebral vasospasm was induced in anaesthetised rabbits by injecting 1 ml of fresh blood in the cisterna magna. In a first experiment, the diameter of the basilar artery was measured by repeated angiograms over 60 min. In a second experiment, rCBF was measured over 60 min by the radioactive microspheres method wi

We investigated 76 patients with known subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) in order to compare the results of angiography and non-invasive Doppler recordings of cerebral artery blood velocity in the diagnosis of cerebral vasospasm. One radiologist and one neurovascular surgeon assessed angiographic spasm visually on a four-level scale. The radiologist's ratings were the term of reference for the study. When there was angiographic spasm of the middle cerebral artery (MCA), the MCA blood velocity was higher and the blood velocity in the distal extracranical internal carotid artery (ICA) was lower tha

The complications from cerebral angiography encountered in 1034 patients between 1977 and 1982 are described. A standardised technique of cerebral transfemoral catheter angiography is outlined, which helps to reduce the number of complications. The role of the disease for which the examination is done, and the effect of the new contrast media on the risk of the examination, are discussed. Patients with a compromised blood-brain barrier and manifest reduction in cerebral blood flow run a greater risk than patients with other abnormalities. Low osmolar contrast media are better tolerated subject…

In a 47-year-old women two subarachnoid haemorrhages developed with paralysis of the right oculomotor nerve. A big aneurysm on the right internal carotid artery was closed with a clip from intracranial approach. Seven months later the left oculomotor nerve was paralysed without haemorrhage. Another operation was done on the contralateral side clipping the aneurysm on the left carotid artery. The patient tolerated well both operations. The necessary of control postoperative angiography is stressed.

In a cooperative study the examination results of CT and angiography of 756 patients with verified supratentorial tumors were compared. CT displayed the higher diagnostic accuracy. Temporobasal tumors cause diagnostic problems for both examination methods. The value of arteriography is still unquestioned because using this examination method the differential diagnosis of mass lesions can be considered largely secured.
