Assessing child abuse: the TRIADS checklist.

Although all types of abuse injure children, psychological abuse is most elusive and damaging on many levels, particularly levels of attachm … and ultimately interpersonal regulating mechanisms underscores the need to attend to all aspects of child abuse.

Selected perinatal factors and child abuse.

A matched pair case-control study was conducted to compare birth weights, gestations, and length of hospital stay (LOS) of 532 children subsequently reported as physically abused with comparable data from a group of control children matched on age, sex, race, and maternal education. Our results indicated a moderate association between both low birthweight and very short gestation with physical abuse. Results for LOS were inconclusive.

Controversial aspects of imaging in child abuse: a second roundtable discussion from the ESPR child abuse taskforce.

This second roundtable discussion was convened at the 56th European Society of Paediatric Radiology (ESPR) 2022 Annual Meeting in Marseille, France, to discuss controversial aspects of imaging in child abuse. The following topics were discussed: Fracture dating-the published literature is broadly similar with respect to the identification of the radiographic stages of bony healing. The non-expert/general radiologist is encouraged to use broad descriptors of fracture healing (acute, healing or old) within their reports, rather than attempting to date fractures. The more experienced/expert radio…

Sudden infant death syndrome, child sexual abuse, and child development.

Since the introduction of the Back to Sleep Campaigns, there has been a dramatic reduction in sudden infant death syndrome in this country. Steven Blatt and Victoria Meguid review the literature surrounding sleep position. Investigators have continued efforts to find other modifiable risk factors of sudden infant death syndrome. A prospective study of more than 33,000 neonates found a link between a prolonged QT electrocardiogram interval and sudden infant death syndrome. Also discussed are investigations seeking to explain the relationship between smoking and sudden infant death syndrome. Ann

Child Sexual Abuse and Risk of Revictimization: Impact of Child Demographics, Sexual Abuse Characteristics, and Psychiatric Disorders.

Approximately half of child sexual abuse (CSA) victims report sexual revictimization later in life; however, there is limited rigorous evidence concerning factors contributing to sexual and nonsexual forms of revictimization. This article investigates the relationships between CSA and a range of revictimization experiences. It also examines the role of other individual-level factors (demographics, CSA characteristics, psychiatric disorders) in the risk of revictimization. The study compares data from a prospective-longitudinal study of 2,759 Australian children (<17 years old) alleged to have

Child health care coverage and reductions in child physical abuse.

Children in the United States suffered almost 118,000 cases of physical abuse in 2015. One factor that might help decrease child physical abuse is health care coverage. This paper presents a justification for a link between health care coverage and reductions in child physical abuse and, though it does not assess specific causal mechanisms, examines evidence for such a connection. The paper uses panel data linear regression analysis to explore state level physical abuse and health care coverage rates. Findings indicate a statistically significant relationship between increases in child health

Child advocacy center based group treatment for child sexual abuse.

The present study examines initial symptom presentation among participants, outcomes, and social validity for a group treatment for child sexual abuse delivered at a child advocacy center. Participants were 97 children and their nonoffending caregivers who were referred to Project SAFE (Sexual Abuse Family Education), a standardized, 12-week cognitive-behavioral group treatment for families who have experienced child sexual abuse. Sixty-four percent of children presented with clinically significant symptoms on at least one measure with established clinical cutoffs. Caregivers of children who p

The prevalence of child sexual abuse with online sexual abuse added.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Research efforts are measuring various forms of online sexual abuse. There is a need to incorporate such measures of online sexual abuse into the calculation of overall prevalence rates for child sexual abuse. PARTICIPANTS: A sample of 2639 respondents aged 18-to-28 was recruited from a nationally representative online panel. METHODS: Using an online questionnaire, respondents were assessed via self-report about 9 types of online sexual abuse in childhood and were also assessed with 2 questions that have been used to assess generic child sexual abuse prevalence in p

SCAN for Abuse: Electronic Health Record-Based Universal Child Abuse Screening.

BACKGROUND: Identification of physical abuse at the point of care without a systematic approach remains inherently subjective and prone to judgement error. This study examines the implementation of an electronic health record (EHR)-based universal child injury screen (CIS) to improve detection rates of child abuse. METHODS: CIS was implemented in the EHR admission documentation for all patients age 5 or younger at a single medical center, with the following questions. 1) "Is this patient an injured/trauma patient?" 2) "If this is a trauma/injured patient, where did the injury occur?" A "Yes" …

Fatal child abuse: a study of 13 cases of continuous abuse.

A parent who continuously physically abuses her/his child doesn't aim to kill the child but commits an accidental filicide in a more violent outburst of anger. Fatal abuse deaths are prevented by recognition of signs of battering in time. Out of 200 examined intra-familial filicides, 23 (12%) were caused by child battering and 13 (7%) by continuous battering. The medical and court records of the victim and the perpetrator were examined. The perpetrator was the biological mother and the victim was male in 69 per cent of the cases. The abused children were either younger than one year or from tw

Exploring the controversy in child abuse pediatrics and false accusations of abuse.

There is a controversy in child abuse pediatrics between an established corps of child abuse pediatricians aligned with hospital colleagues and law enforcement, and a multi-specialty challenger group of doctors and other medical professionals working with public interest lawyers. The latter group questions the scientific validity of the core beliefs of child abuse pediatricians and believes that there are a substantial number of false accusations of abuse occurring. An unproven primary hypothesis, crafted around 1975 by a small group of pediatricians with an interest in child abuse, lies at th…

[The effect of child abuse and neglect on the later appearance of substance abuse].

INTRODUCTION: The consequences of childhood abuse and neglect can be grave. One of them is the use of drugs since it is conducive to the incidence of several physical and psychological problems. Many sorts of abuses can be differentiated, but from the point of view of this study the most significant ones are sexual, physical and emotional abuses as well as neglect. METHOD: For the exploration of the specialized literature the following English data bases were used: PubMed, PsycINFO, EISZ, EBSCO, Science Direct. The selection from 1992 to 2008 was assembled with a complex search applied so as

Measuring Japanese mothers' perception of child abuse: development of a Japanese version of the child abuse blame scale--physical abuse (CABS-PA-J).

BACKGROUND: The Child Abuse Blame Scale - Physical Abuse (CABS-PA) was translated into Japanese and its subscale items modified by the authors according to the Japanese cultural context. The aim of the current study was to investigate the appropriateness, reliability, and clinical applicability of the CABS-PA Japanese version (CABS-PA-J). Modifications were made to enable the determination of child abuse recognition in a Japanese cultural setting and early clinical intervention in child abuse cases. METHODS: The CABS-PA text was translated into Japanese, then back translated. The appropriaten…

The German Dunkelfeld project: a pilot study to prevent child sexual abuse and the use of child abusive images.

INTRODUCTION: Sexual interest toward prepubescents and pubescents (pedophilia and hebephilia) constitutes a major risk factor for child sexual abuse (CSA) and viewing of child abusive images, i.e., child pornography offenses (CPO). Most child sexual exploitation involving CSA and CPO are undetected and unprosecuted in the "Dunkelfeld" (German: "dark field"). AIM: This study assesses a treatment program to enhance behavioral control and reduce associated dynamic risk factors (DRF) in self-motivated pedophiles/hebephiles in the Dunkelfeld. METHODS: Between 2005 and 2011, 319 undetected help-se

The epidemiology of child abuse: findings from the Second National Incidence and Prevalence Study of Child Abuse and Neglect.

The epidemiology of child abuse was investigated with data from the Second National Incidence and Prevalence Study of Child Abuse and Neglect. A statistical comparison of incidence rates suggested that age, family income, and ethnicity were risk factors for both sexual abuse and physical abuse, but county metrostatus was not. Gender was a risk factor for sexual abuse but not for physical abuse. A logistic regression analysis showed that ethnicity, county metrostatus, and a gender-by-income interaction distinguished sexual abuse from physical abuse.
