BACKGROUND: Clinical staff offering sexual health services to young people need to balance the rights of the young person to confidentiality and good quality advice with the need to protect their wider interests. The needs of young clients may be complex and raise ethical and medico-legal questions for the staff involved in their care.

This study used administrative data, census data, and geographic information system (GIS) technology to map and analyze the rates and distribution of child physical abuse, sexual abuse, and neglect at the neighborhood level in a suburban jurisdiction. The results provide an example of how administrative data, census data, and GIS technology can give child protective services and community-based agencies a visual tool to help identify and target neighborhoods in which children may be at high risk for maltreatment.

We assessed the child protective services (CPS) histories of children with medical encounters for self-harm (SH) using linked medical and CPS data. Most children with SH had prior CPS reports (61.0%), but few had foster care placements (5.9%). CPS histories may be important to understand, treat, and prevent pediatric SH.
