Morphological and histological characters of penile organization in eleven species of molossid bats.

The penis is the reproductive organ that ensures efficient copulation and success of internal fertilization in all species of mammals, with special challenges for bats, where copulation can occur during flight. Comparative anatomical analyses of different species of bats can contribute to a better understanding of morphological diversity of this organ, concerning organization and function. In this study, we describe the external morphology and histomorphology of the penis and baculum in eleven species of molossid bats. The present study showed that penile organization in these species displaye

Tentative novel lyssavirus in a bat in Finland.

A tentative novel member of the genus Lyssavirus, designated as Kotalahti bat lyssavirus, was detected in a Brandt's bat (Myotis brandtii) in Finland. Based on phylogenetic analysis, the virus differs from other known lyssaviruses, being closely related to Khujand virus, Aravan virus, Bokeloh bat lyssavirus and European bat lyssavirus 2.

Novel Borrelia Genotypes from Brazil Indicate a New Group of Borrelia spp. Associated with South American Bats.

The bacterial genus Borrelia comprises vector-borne spirochetes that have been classified into three major groups: the relapsing fever group (RFG), the Borrelia burgdorferi Johnson, Schmid, Hyde, Steigerwalt & Brenner sensu lato group (Bbsl), and the reptile-monotreme group (RMG). All three groups have been associated mainly with ticks and wild animals, especially rodents, birds, and reptiles. Here, we searched for Borrelia infection among 99 vampire bats [Desmodus rotundus (É. Geoffroy)] (Chiroptera: Phyllostomidae) from the Brazilian semiarid region. Through molecular investigation of bat in…

Evidence and molecular characterization of Bartonella spp. and hemoplasmas in neotropical bats in Brazil.

The order Chiroptera is considered the second largest group of mammals in the world, hosting important zoonotic virus and bacteria. Bartonella and hemotropic mycoplasmas are bacteria that parasite different mammals' species, including humans, causing different clinical manifestations. The present work aimed investigating the occurrence and assessing the phylogenetic positioning of Bartonella spp. and Mycoplasma spp. in neotropical bats sampled from Brazil. Between December 2015 and April 2016, 325 blood and/or tissues samples were collected from 162 bats comprising 19 different species sampled…

COMPARISON OF AXILLARY, RECTAL, AND ESOPHAGEAL THERMOMETRY IN ANESTHETIZED LARGE FLYING FOXES (PTEROPUS VAMPYRUS).

Hypothermia is a common potentially serious complication of veterinary anesthesia, particularly affecting species with a large body surface area-to-mass ratio, such as Chiroptera. There are limited options for monitoring temperature in bats, with size being a significant limiting factor. This study evaluated three methods of temperature measurement-esophageal, rectal, and axillary-in a convenience sample of nine apparently healthy anesthetized large flying foxes (Pteropus vampyrus). At the time of anesthetic induction and every 5 min until recovery, rectal and esophageal temperatures were reco…

Bats from an area of the Colombian Caribbean reveal the circulation of Alphacoronavirus.

The evolutionary origin of coronaviruses is related to bats (order Chiroptera), and their association with pathologies in animals and humans is expected. Anthropic threats reduce bat diversity and expose humans to extraordinary transmission and spread of associated viruses, putting health and food security at risk owing to the multiple ecological roles that bats play. This study aimed to determine the presence of coronaviruses in bats in the Department of Córdoba, Colombia. Between 2022 and 2023, 11 municipalities were selected using non-probabilistic sampling methods. A total of 262 bats belo…

The process of testicular regression also impacts the physiology of the epididymis of the bat Molossus molossus, although with a delay in epididymal response due to sperm storage.

Responsible for post-testicular maturation, concentration, protection and sperm storage, the epididymis is an organ that can be easily subdivided into three segments: caput, corpus and cauda. Each epididymal region displays different morphology and functions within the sperm maturation process. Despite the great importance of this organ, studies on its morphology and hormonal control in bats remain scarce. Thus, the aim of this study was to morphologically analyze the epididymis of the bat Molossus molossus (Chiroptera: Molossidae), in order to evaluate its morphological and morphometric varia…

Bat lyssaviruses.

Bats (order Chiroptera) are the principal reservoir host for 14 of the 16 officially recognised lyssavirus species. Rabies virus is the only lyssavirus that is well established in terrestrial carnivores (worldwide), as well as bats (but only in the Americas). The other bat lyssaviruses occur only outside the Americas. They have a distinct geographical distribution and association with specific bat species, with limited cross-species transmission to other animals and humans, resulting in deadend infections. The nucleoprotein gene is well conserved between all lyssavirus species. Therefore, gold…

Status of oral rabies vaccination in wild carnivores in the United States.

Persistence of multiple variants of rabies virus in wild Chiroptera and Carnivora presents a continuing challenge to medical, veterinary and wildlife management professionals. Oral rabies vaccination (ORV) targeting specific Carnivora species has emerged as an integral adjunct to conventional rabies control strategies to protect humans and domestic animals. ORV has been applied with progress toward eliminating rabies in red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) in western Europe and southern Ontario, Canada. More recently since 1995, coordinated ORV was implemented among eastern states in the U.S.A. to preven…

Testing Morphological Relationships Between Female and Male Copulatory Structures in Bats.

The lower reproductive tract of female mammals has several competing functions including mating, tract health maintenance, and parturition. Diverse vaginal anatomy suggests interactions between natural and sexual selection, yet despite its importance, female copulatory morphology remains under-studied. We undertook a comparative study across the species-rich mammalian order Chiroptera (bats) with a focus on the suborder Yangochiroptera (Vespertilioniformes) to examine how female vaginal features may have coevolved with male penis morphology to minimize mechanical damage to their tissues during…

Dataset on blood parameters including leukocyte profiles of eastern European vespertilionid and rhinolophid bats.

Understanding the immunological profiles of wild bats is crucial for monitoring population health, disease dynamics, and stress responses in changing environments. Here, we present a dataset of 747 blood smear samples collected from 19 European bat species between 2017 and 2023 in Ukraine. For a substantial portion of individuals, red and white blood cell counts were assessed, and for most, differential leukocyte profiles were recorded, including segmented and band neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, and basophils. The dataset is accompanied by rich metadata, which, among other a

Comparative Histological and Histochemical Studies on the Pituitary Gland in the Egyptian Insectivorous Bat Rhinopoma Hardwickii (Gray, 1831) in Young and Adult Developmental Stages.

The pituitary gland is the primary endocrine gland, consisting of many cell types in its anterior region that regulate crucial physiological processes like development, maturation, metabolism, reproduction, stress response, and aging. This study aims to investigate and compare anatomical, histological, and histochemical variations between young and adult female pituitary glands of Rhinopoma hardwickii. The pituitary gland of ten healthy young and adult R. hardwickii has been used. Histological findings indicated that the gland in adult bats was irregular, whereas in young bats it was semicircu

First Report of Bandavirus dabieense in Bats and Ticks Collected from Bat Habitats.

Background: The zoonotic infectious disease, severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS), caused by the SFTS virus (SFTSV), Bandavirus dabieense, was first identified in China in 2009 and reported in the Republic of Korea in 2013. The primary vector is the tick Haemaphysalis (H.) longicornis, which is endemic to the Asia-Pacific region and has a wide range of hosts. While SFTSV has been studied in various wildlife species, no investigation has focused explicitly on bats, which are ecologically significant in the transmission of zoonotic viruses. Materials and Methods: To investigate the

Absence of lunar phobia in European swarming vespertilionid bats.

"Lunar phobia" in bats has been widely discussed since its description in tropical bats in 1978. The phenomenon has been frequently contested and supported and was first reported in European bats in 2020. Our study seeks to clarify the debate by describing the relationship between the activity of selected swarming vespertilionid bats (Family: Vespertilionidae) and moonlight levels. To verify a potential connection to the latter, a swarming dataset was analysed in respect of estimated moonlight illumination. Moonlight estimates were based on geographical location and several lunar parameters, t

Hershkovitzia (Diptera: Nycteribiidae): revision, phylogeny, and cophylogeny.

Hershkovitzia Guimares & DAndretta, 1956 belongs to Nycteribiidae (Diptera), a family of hematophagous and obligate ectoparasites of bats. Hershkovitzia parasitize bats in the Thyropteridae family, which includes only one genus, Thyroptera Spix, 1823. Hershkovitzia species mostly have a one-to-one association pattern with their hosts, except for H. cabala Peterson & Lacey, 1985 and Hershkovitzia autinoae sp. nov., which share the same host. A review is presented of the species known to date, i.e., H. primitiva Guimares & DAndretta, 1956, H. coeca Theodor, 1967, H. inaequalis Theodor, 1967, H.
