The effects of electro-acupuncture (EA) on plasma concentration of glucose and on responsiveness to insulin were examined in an animal model of diabetes, the streptozotocin-treated rat. Two weeks after treatment with streptozotocin, rats were anesthetized with urethane-chloralose and subjected to the EA for 10 min delivered to the tibialis anterior muscle of one side. The cardiovascular responses to ketamine injected intracisternally were examined in chloralose anaesthetized cats. Blood pressure and heart rate were recorded at different time intervals after intracisternal injection of drug or saline vehicle. Spinal cord blood flow (SCBF) has been measured in segments of the thoracolumbar cord of dogs using the hydrogen clearance technique. Clearances were recorded and flows calculated from electrodes placed in grey and white matter. The position of the recording electrodes was marked by diathermy and confirmed in each experiment. The SCBF in the white matter for 82 clearances was 13.7+/-4.5 ml/100 g/min using pentobarbitone anaesthesia.
