Acute acalculous cholecystitis (AC) is an inflammatory process of the gallbladder, often caused by other severe diseases. The etiology is multifactorial, but the pathogenesis is in all cases a reduction in the gallbladder's emptying capacity. The mortality of AC reaches 85% without treatment. This fact makes it important to consider AC as a possible complication to major surgery, multi-trauma, and artificial ventilation. Symptoms resemble "normal" cholecystitis, but may be masked by the underlying severe disease. Fever without known focus may be the only symptom. Ultrasound, CT-scanning or cho…

Thirty-two patients with acute acalculous cholecystitis are presented. The age of the patients ranged from 1 to 80 years, with an average of 46.3 years. Acute acalculous cholecystitis occurred during the postoperative period in only four patients. Three patients were receiving total parenteral nutrition and 16 patients had one or more associated medical diseases. One patient had acute acalculous cholecystitis due to mechanical obstruction of the cystic duct caused by a diaphragmatic hernia. The most frequent signs and symptoms were right upper quadrant abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, fever, …

The authors have studied causes of the appearance of acute cholecystitis after a critical multiple trauma complicated by shock. Problems of diagnosis, treatment and prophylactics of the disease are discussed on the basis of 4 personal observations and literature data.

Results of the observation of 160 operated patients with acalculous cholecystitis complicated by biliary hypertension resulting from choledocholithiasis, stenosis of the great duodenal papilla, indurative and acute pancreatitis or purulent cholangitis in 52,5% are described. The authors believe that the surgical intervention should include, in addition to cholecystectomy, choledochotomy followed by correction of the alterations revealed.

A case of acute cholecystitis in a patient of 66 is reported. The aetiopathogenetic aspects are examined with particular regard to the microbiology of such forms, the particular radiological and anatomo-pathological findings and the medical and surgical implications, in the light of a review of the question.

We present the images of ultrasound, magnetic resonance and histology of a patient with suggestive findings of xanthogranulomatous cholecystitis. Gallbladder cancer cannot be completely ruled out until the histological study of the surgical sample is performed.

AIMS: Xanthogranulomatous cholecystitis (XGC), an unusual histological variant of chronic cholecystitis, is characterised by mixed foamy histiocytic and lymphoplasmocytic infiltration and fibrosis. Radiologically, the poorly defined nodular growth pattern often leads to the misinterpretation of XGC as gallbladder cancer. In this study, we aimed to identify the relationship of XGC with IgG4-related cholecystitis.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We re-evaluated 57 surgically resected XGCs and 104 conventional chronic cholecystitis cases, according to the histological features observed in IgG4-related dise…

BACKGROUND: CA19-9 is a classical tumor marker and plays an important role in the diagnosis of biliary and pancreatic cancer. However, a few cases reported that the tumor maker CA19-9 is abnormally elevated in patients with calculous cholecystitis, but the relation between severity of calculous cholecystitis and serum CA19-9 level are still unknown.
METHODS: Total 105 calculous cholecystitis patients from first hospital were collected and divided into high serum CA19-9 group(high group, n = 35) and normal serum CA19-9 group(normal group, n = 70). Perioperative data including blood cell count,…
