Chloropropanols such as 3-monochloropropane-1,2-diol (3-MCPD) and 1,3-dichloro-2-propanol (1,3-DCP) have drawn increasing attention due to their release from food contact paper and their potential carcinogenic effects. In this study, the effects were investigated of water extraction conditions on release of chloropropanols from food contact paper, and the extraction efficiencies of chloropropanols by water extract and migration method were compared. Cold water was found to be more severe than hot water for extraction of chloropropanols, with the highest water extraction value obtained at 23°C.

The metabolic fate of [14C] benzoic acid administered i.p. to marasmic-kwashiorkor rats has been investigated. Rats fed a normal diet with benzoic acid administered i.p. at 200 mg/kg, excreted the benzoic acid mainly as hippuric acid (99% of 24 h excretion), while marasmic-kwashiorkor rats excreted 62--85% as hippuric acid and 14--37% as the glucuronide conjugate. 2 weeks after repletion metabolism of benzoic acid by the marasmic-kwashiorkor rats on the stock diet had returned to normal; most of the benzoate was excreted as hippuric acid.

Experiments were performed with rats to test the physiological significance of a previously proposed mechanism of action of thioureylene antithyroid drugs, which had been derived from results obtained with a model system containing purified thyroid peroxidase. A highly sensitive analytical method for 25 kinds of primary aromatic amines and azo-dyes in paper products was developed. Free amines and total amines of the samples were analyzed. A radioimmunoassay (RIA) without chromatography for the determination of 5 alpha-androstan-3 alpha, 17 beta-diol and of 5 alpha-androstane-3 beta, 17 beta-diol in human plasma by using highly specific antisera against the 15 beta-carboxyethylmercapto-bovine serum albumin conjugates is described. It could be shown that the 13% cross reaction of the 5 alpha-androstane-3 beta, 17 beta-diol antiserum with pure androst-5-ene-3 beta, 17 beta-diol was negligibly low in plasma extracts. Sensitivity, accuracy, precision, and linearity revealed results which comply with the requisites of a reliable RIA.
