PURPOSE: To report and analyze the circumstances of uveal melanoma detection.
METHODS: The records of 143 consecutive patients diagnosed in … with a systematic detection of the tumor (p<0.005). Liver metastasis occurred more frequently with ciliary body melanomas (p<0.001), which were more frequently the largest lesions.
CONCLUSION: These results emphasize the importance of early detection of uveal melanoma. We recommended frequent fundus examination after pupil dilatation.

Uveal melanoma mainly affects the choroid and to a lesser extent the ciliary body. Its clinical presentation, as well as the angiographic and microscopic features are often reported. Its macroscopic appearance is less often reported in publications, however. The macroscopic study of these tumors provides useful information and a series of photographs illustrating the macroscopic study of these tumors was gathered to be shown to ophthalmologists who have little experience with these intraocular tumors.

Endogenous catecholamine concentrations in the rat iris-ciliary body (ICB) were determined using the technique of microwave irradiation, whereby enzymes are inactivated within milliseconds, and high performance liquid chromatography. Rats were sacrificed by microwave irradiation at 9.5 kW at 2450 MHz for 0.9 seconds. The eyes were enucleated, the ICBs isolated, and 10 ICBs from 10 eyes were treated as one sample. The clinical, light microscopical, and electron microscopical features of a mesectodermal leiomyoma of the ciliary body are presented. This exceptionally rare and apparently benign tumour is considered to be of neural crest origin. In the case described the tumour cells were seen to contain thin filaments with focal densities and conspicuous numbers of mitochondria, and smooth muscle protein was demonstrated by immunohistochemical means.

Ocular aldehyde oxidase was purified for the first time from bovine ciliary body cytosol by ammonium sulfate fractionation and successive HPLC using DEAE anion-exchange and hydroxyapatite columns. The purified enzyme was homogeneous by the criterion of sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. We examined tyrosinase activity in pigmented tissues from five human eyes. Tissue extract was prepared in cholate-phosphate buffer by homogenization, centrifugation, trypsin digestion and hydroxylapatite column chromatography. Tyrosinase activity was spectrophotometrically assayed as dopa (L-3,4-dihydroxylphenylalanine) oxidase activity. Tyrosinase activity was detected in the extracts of the ciliary body. Enzyme activity was inhibited by phenylthiourea but not by 3-iodo-tyrosine. We believe that our findings confirm the presence of tyrosinase activity in the human ciliary body.

To examine the size of the ciliary body stroma (CBS) in dependence of the morphology of the anterior chamber angle in enucleated human eyes, we histomorphometrically examined human enucleated eyes. We present the case of a 27-year-old female patient who developed bilateral ciliary body edema with secondary glaucoma and myopic shift during systemic treatment with cyclosporine for aplastic anemia. After application of topical atropine and prednisolone acetate and conversion from cyclosporine to tacrolimus, the ophthalmologic symptoms resolved completely. Since an infectious etiology was not evident, we hypothesize that ciliary body edema was caused by impairment of microvascular integrity by cyclosporine.
