A prominent evidence of inherited bleeding disorder in newborn males is excessive post-circumcision bleeding. Male circumcision in Nigeria is the rule rather than the exception. Male siblings of some of the Nigerian haemophiliacs consequently died from severe post-circumcision bleeding. The aim was to determine the incidence of inherited factor VIIIc (FVIIIc) deficiencies in live male infants undergoing circumcision in South West, Nigeria. The study population was 244 male infants drawn from University College Hospital and Our Lady of Apostles Catholic Hospital, Oluyoro, Ibadan. Pre-circumcisi

This study was aimed at evaluating the knowledge and attitudes of religious officials in Turkey about circumcision. Among the Imams, 96.7% (n = 234) were married, and 91.3% (n = 221) had male children. The place of circumcision was at home in 42.1% (n = 102), and 56.1% (n = 123) of the performers were not licensed physicians. Overall, 59.1% of the Imams believed that circumcision provided protection against HIV, 49.6% believed it reduced the risk of penile cancer, and 69.8% believed that circumcision increased sexual potency. Our research reveals that Imams in Turkey lack knowledge about circu

BACKGROUND: Evidence from biological, epidemiological, and controlled intervention studies has demonstrated that male circumcision (MC) protects males from HIV infection, and MC is now advocated as a public-health intervention against HIV. MC provides direct protection only to men, but is expected to provide indirect protection to women at risk of acquiring HIV from heterosexual transmission. How such indirect protection interacts with the possibility that MC campaigns will lead to behavior changes, however, is not yet well understood. Our objective here is to investigate the link between indi

OBJECTIVES: Male circumcision is associated with reduced risk of HIV infection. This may be partly because of a protective effect of circumcision on other sexually transmitted infections (STI), especially those causing genital ulcers, but evidence for such protection is unclear. Our objective was to conduct a systematic review and meta-analyses of the associations between male circumcision and infection with herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2), Treponema pallidum, or Haemophilus ducreyi.
METHODS: Electronic databases (1950-2004) were searched using keywords and text terms for herpes simplex,

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Whether male circumcision reduces the risk of acquiring human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection remains controversial.
STUDY DESIGN: As there have now been a number of studies conducted that have examined this issue, we undertook to review their findings. Thirty epidemiological studies identified in the literature that investigated the association between male circumcision status and risk for HIV infection were reviewed.
RESULTS: Eighteen cross-sectional studies from six countries reported a statistically significant association, four studies from four countri

AIM: Malawi officially launched Voluntary Male Medical Circumcision (VMMC) in 2012 after the 2007 joint WHO /UNAIDS recommendation that VMMC be a key HIV prevention strategy for Sub-Sahara African region. Malawi data, however, contradicted the findings of three randomized studies conducted in Uganda, Kenya and South Africa between 2005 and 2007. While randomized trials demonstrated that male circumcision could contribute to a 60% relative reduction of HIV acquisition by men through heterosexual intercourse, HIV prevalence in Malawi was highest in the Southern Region where 47% of males were tra

Male circumcision is often undertaken to reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections. However, there has been a shift in the motivation to undergo the procedure, as many perceive it as improving their sexual performance. This study investigates factors that influence decision-making about male circumcision. This qualitative study used a combination of in-depth and focus group interviews with men and women to investigate factors that influence the decision to circumcise among Zambian men. In general, both men and women were aware of the protective benefits of male ci

Contrasting ethical and legal arguments have been made concerning neonatal male circumcision (NMC) that merit the first systematic review on this topic. We performed PRISMA-compliant keyword searches of PubMed, EMBASE, SCOPUS, LexisNexis, and other databases and identified 61 articles that met the inclusion criteria. In the bibliographies of these articles, we identified 58 more relevant articles and 28 internet items. We found high-quality evidence that NMC is a low-risk procedure that provides immediate and lifetime medical and health benefits and only rarely leads to later adverse effects o

BACKGROUND: Male circumcision (MC) is a practice involving the surgical excision of the foreskin to expose the glans and it is often performed for religious reasons. Ritual circumcision is frequently carried out by unqualified practitioners in inadequate settings, which can also lead to the death of the individual.
CASE REPORT: A 28-day-old infant was undergoing circumcision by a man that performed the circumcision using a razor blade. During the same day, the child experienced continuous bleeding from the wound and, finally, died after about 20 hours. At autopsy, a cutaneous sharp injury was

Background: Since the recommendation of voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) to reduce the risk of heterosexually acquired HIV, a number of adolescent boys and men in 15 priority countries in Africa have been circumcised. Our primary goal was to identify the incidence of adverse events (AEs) associated with VMMC and to assess the safety profile among adolescent boys 10 - 14 years. Methods: We searched the databases MEDLINE and Embase, WHO, and conference abstracts from 2005 to 2019. The incidence of AEs was estimated by type of AE, size of study and age. Results: We retained 40 studies.

Background: Male circumcision (MC) is proven to substantially reduce men's risk of a number of sexually transmitted infections (STIs). We conducted a detailed systematic review of the scientific literature to determine the relationship between MC and risk of STIs and associated conditions in women. Methods: Database searches by "circumcision women" and "circumcision female" identified 68 relevant articles for inclusion. Examination of bibliographies of these yielded 14 further publications. Each was rated for quality using a conventional rating system. Results: Evaluation of the data from the

BACKGROUND: As voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) programs scale up, there is a pressing need for information about the important cost drivers, and potential efficiency gains. We examine those cost drivers here, and estimate the potential efficiency gains through an econometric model.
METHODS AND FINDINGS: We examined the main cost drivers (i.e., personnel and consumables) associated with providing VMMC in sub-Saharan Africa along a number of dimensions, including facility type and service provider. Primary source facility level data from Kenya, Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda

BACKGROUND: Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision (VMMC) is the surgical removal of all or part of the foreskin from the penis. It is done for medical reasons as it has been shown to reduce the risk of female to male transmission of HIV by up to 60%. It has also been associated with lower transmission of sexually transmitted infections. Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision services have been scaled up in countries with high prevalence, generalised heterosexual HIV epidemics and low rates of male circumcision. Kibera is inhabited by a multi-ethnic community with a sizeable number of un-circumcisin

This meta-analysis aims to systematically evaluate the effects of male circumcision on sexual function, providing insights that may inform clinical practice and future research. A comprehensive literature search was conducted in eight databases until January 30, 2025, with no language restrictions. Data analysis was performed using Review Manager 5.4.1, and the certainty of the evidence was assessed using the GRADE approach. This meta-analysis included 15 studies with a total of 14,737 participants. Although circumcision was associated with higher sexual satisfaction levels compared to noncirc

BACKGROUND: Circumcision is one of the most frequently performed procedure by clinicians, yet its role and indication in clinical practice lacks consensus and remains unclear. We sought to evaluate a collection of male circumcisions to determine the range of indications, histopathological diagnoses, and type of clinicians associated with circumcision.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective descriptive cohort study of male patients who received a circumcision reported by one major dermatopathology laboratory between January 2017 and December 2018. Data were extracted from the histological repor

BACKGROUND: Uganda is working to increase voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) to prevent HIV infection. To support VMMC quality improvement, this study compared three methods of disseminating information to facilities on how to improve VMMC quality: M-providing a written manual; MH-providing the manual plus a handover meeting in which clinicians shared advice on implementing key changes and participated in group discussion; and MHC-manual, handover meeting, and three site visits to the facility in which a coach provided individualized guidance and mentoring on improvement. BACKGROUND: Two cohort studies using data from randomized controlled trials in Africa offer the best evidence to date on the effects of voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) on male sexual function and satisfaction, suggesting no significant impairments in sexual function or satisfaction and some improvements in sexual function after male circumcision.
AIM: To assess the effects of VMMC on sexual function and satisfaction in a large population-based cohort of men circumcised as adults and uncircumcised controls in Kenya.
METHODS: Sexual function and satisfaction of young (median age = 2

BACKGROUND: In South Africa, voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) has recently been implemented as a strategy for reducing the risk of heterosexual HIV acquisition among men. However, there is some concern that VMMC may lead to low risk perception and more risky sexual behavior. This study investigated HIV risk perception and risk behaviors among men who have undergone either VMMC or traditional male circumcision (TMC) compared to those that had not been circumcised.
METHODS: Data collected from the 2012 South African national population-based household survey for males aged 15 years an
