Effects of whole-body vibration training on cognitive function: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Whole-body vibration (WBV) training is a novel training method that stimulates the human neuromuscular system by the use of vibration, the frequency and amplitude of which are controlled, thereby inducing adaptive changes in the body. WBV training is widely used as a clinical prevention and rehabilitation tool in physical medicine and neuro-rehabilitation as a clinical prevention and rehabilitation tool. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present study was to review the effects of WBV on cognitive function, provide an evidence-based foundation for future research on WBV training, and prom

Training with Odors Impacts Hippocampal Thickness in Patients with Mild Cognitive Impairment.

BACKGROUND: The olfactory system is affected early in Alzheimer's disease and olfactory loss can already be observed in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Olfactory training is effective for improving olfactory and cognitive function by stimulating the olfactory pathway, but its effect on patients with MCI remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this randomized, prospective, controlled, blinded study was to assess whether a 4-month period of olfactory training (frequent short-term sniffing various odors) may have an effect on olfactory function, cognitive function, and morphology o

Computerized cognitive training in post-treatment hematological cancer survivors: a feasibility study.

BackgroundComputerized cognitive training (CCT) programs have shown some effectiveness in alleviating cognitive symptoms in long-term cancer survivors. For patients presenting with cognitive symptoms in the early post-treatment phase, the benefit of CCT is unclear. To assess the possibility of testing the effectiveness of CCT in the early post-treatment period, our aim was to investigate the feasibility of an 8-week home-based, online CCT intervention among patients who have recently completed treatment for hematological malignancy.MethodsThis study was a single-arm, non-blinded, feasibility s…

Central auditory processing deficits in schizophrenia: Effects of auditory-based cognitive training.

BACKGROUND: Sensory processing abnormalities are common in schizophrenia (SZ) and impact everyday functions, such as speech perception in noisy environments. Auditory-based targeted cognitive training (TCT) is a "bottom up" cognitive remediation intervention designed to enhance the speed and accuracy of low-level auditory information processing. However, the effects of TCT on behavioral measures of central auditory processing (CAP) and the role of CAP function on verbal learning outcomes in SZ are unknown. METHODS: SZ (n = 42) and healthy subjects (CTL; n = 18) underwent comprehensive clinica…

Cognitive training to improve memory in individuals undergoing electroconvulsive therapy: Negative findings.

Although electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) remains the most effective treatment for severe depression, some patients report persistent memory problems following ECT that impact their quality of life and their willingness to consent to further ECT. While cognitive training has been shown to improve memory performance in various conditions, this approach has never been applied to help patients regain their memory after ECT. In a double-blind study, we tested the efficacy of a new cognitive training program called Memory Training for ECT (Mem-ECT), specifically designed to target anterograde and re…

Cognitive training modifies disease symptoms in a mouse model of Huntington's disease.

Huntington's disease (HD) is an incurable neurodegenerative disorder which causes a triad of motor, cognitive and psychiatric disturbances. Cognitive disruptions are a core feature of the disease, which significantly affect daily activities and quality of life, therefore cognitive training interventions present an exciting therapeutic intervention possibility for HD. We aimed to determine if specific cognitive training, in an operant task of attention, modifies the subsequent behavioural and neuropathological phenotype of the Hdh(Q111) mouse model of HD. Three testing groups comprising both Hd…

Feasibility and efficacy of intensive cognitive training in early-stage Alzheimer's disease.

Cognitive training may be beneficial for individuals with Alzheimer's disease (AD); however, the effects are modest with little evidence of carryover. Prior studies included limited hours and low intensity of training. The purpose of this study was to test the feasibility and efficacy of many hours of intensive cognitive training with adults in the early stages of AD. Twenty-one adults with very mild or mild AD participated in cognitive training for 10 days over 2 weeks with 4 to 5 hours of training each day. Participants significantly improved in practiced computer-based tasks including those…

The antidepressant effect of cognitive reappraisal training on individuals cognitively vulnerable to depression: Could cognitive bias be modified through the prefrontal-amygdala circuits?

Cognitive reappraisal (CR) is one of the core treatment components of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and is the gold standard treatment for major depressive disorders. Accumulating evidence indicates that cognitive reappraisal could function as a protective factor of cognitive vulnerability to depression. However, the neural mechanism by which CR training reduces cognitive vulnerability to depression is unclear. There is ample evidence that the prefrontal-amygdala circuit is involved in CR. This study proposes a novel cognitive bias model of CR training which hypothesizes that CR training

Effects of immersive virtual reality and adaptive cognitive training on cognition and function in parkinson's disease mild cognitive impairment: a randomized clinical trial.

Cognitive impairment is a common non-motor feature of Parkinson's disease with no established treatments. Non-pharmacological interventions may promote neural plasticity and enhance cognition. However, high-quality trials are needed to confirm their efficacy and underlying mechanisms. We conducted a 24-week, single-center, randomized, single-blind clinical trial to investigate the efficacy of Immersive Virtual Reality (IVR) and adaptive Computerized Cognitive Training (CCT) for mild cognitive impairment in Parkinson's disease (PD-MCI) in 51 individuals. Participants were randomized into an exe…

Cognitive-Motor Dual Task Training Synergistically Improves Aging-related Cognitive Dysfunction By Reducing TMAO and Suppressing TXNIP/NLRP3 Pathway.

Cognitive dysfunction is highly prevalent in older adults and severely impairs daily activities and quality of life. Rehabilitation training alleviates aging-related cognitive dysfunction (ARCD); however, the mechanisms underlying differential effects of different training regimens remain poorly understood. Motor training relieves TMAO-triggered neuroinflammation, while cognitive training (CT) improves ARCD via suppression of chronic inflammatory signaling. Cognitive-motor dual-task training (CMDT) yields more obvious cognitive protection than single-mode training, yet the molecular mechanisms…

Combined transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) and cognitive training (CT) for cognitive impairment: Evidence from clinical applications and basic research.

Cognitive impairment is a serious pathological feature of neuropsychiatric disorders, making the exploration of effective treatments urgent. Recent research shows that combined transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) and cognitive training (CT) can reduce cognitive deficits. This review summarizes studies on neurological disorders that use both clinical patients and rodent models to highlight the underlying neural mechanisms. In patients, this combined approach improves cognitive domains such as attention, working memory, and executive function. Improvements have been observed in patients wi…

Brain age prediction in stroke patients: Highly reliable but limited sensitivity to cognitive performance and response to cognitive training.

Cognitive deficits are important predictors for outcome, independence and quality of life after stroke, but often remain unnoticed and unattended because other impairments are more evident. Computerized cognitive training (CCT) is among the candidate interventions that may alleviate cognitive difficulties, but the evidence supporting its feasibility and effectiveness is scarce, partly due to the lack of tools for outcome prediction and monitoring. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides candidate markers for disease monitoring and outcome prediction. By integrating information not only about…
