Comparison of Rectal and Intraoperative Findings in Horses with Colic.

Per rectum examination (PRE) is commonly used in the triage of horses with acute abdominal pain, despite reports of associated risk factors for both horses and personnel, but its diagnostic accuracy is questionable. This multicenter, observational study aimed to evaluate the agreement between PRE findings and surgical findings obtained via exploratory laparotomy in horses with colic. A total of 201 cases from four equine referral hospitals across Europe were included. Rectal findings were categorized as primary (most likely cause of colic) or additional. Agreement with surgical findings was as…

Symmetric and asymmetric dimethylarginines in healthy and colic horses.

This study investigated the plasma concentrations of symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA) and asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) in healthy horses and in horses affected by colic in relation to the type of colic and systemic inflammation response syndrome (SIRS) status. Upon admission (T0), horses underwent a physical examination, and the SIRS status was assessed. The horses with colic were divided retrospectively based on the type of colic, SIRS status, treatment, and outcome. SDMA and ADMA levels were measured at T0 and then every 24 h at four time points (T1, T2, T3, T4). Differences between g…

Iron-related markers of inflammation in horses with colic.

The aim of the study was to compare and correlate levels of ferritin, transferrin, iron and APPs in healthy horses and those surgically treated for strangulating colic. On admission, measurements of inflammatory markers related to iron and total protein, fibrinogen, albumin, haptoglobin and ceruloplasmin were made. The study comprised 22 horses, divided into a control group (CG) of healthy horses (n = 10) and horses with surgically treated acute abdomen (n = 12), obstruction group (OG). The OG was subdivided according to the affected intestinal segment (small vs. large) and according to outcom…

Effect of gender on presentation and outcome of renal colic.

OBJECTIVES: To examine gender-related differences in the presentation, management, and outcomes of patients admitted to the emergency depart … ults demonstrate that gender does effect presentation and outcome of patients presenting with renal colic. Females were found to have elevated infectious parameters, more nausea and vomiting and a higher incidence of positive urine cultures. Males admitted to the ED were found to have significantly higher serum creatinine levels. Medical expulsive thera …

[Risk factors for contrast extravasation in renal colic].

INTRODUCTION: Non-traumatic ruptureof the pyeloureterocaliceal system (PUC) is anuncommon clinical entity. The most frequent cause isureteral obstruction due to lithiasic pathology, whichis present in up to 75%. To our knowledge, there isno description in the literature of the possible factorsassociated with this event. Our objective is to analyzethe variables associated with intravenous contrastextravasation in patients with renal colic due to singleureteral lithiasis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed aretrospective, descriptive analysis of a series ofpatients who, in the context of renal …

[Not all low back pain is renal colic].

Low back pain is one of the most frequent reasons for consultation in primary care. Sometimes it is not easy to make a good differential diagnosis, because the number of pathologies that can express themselves with such symptoms is very wide and a complementary test or referral to the reference hospital is not always indicated. The following is a clinical case of a 59-year-old female patient with a history of dyslipidemia treated with ezetimibe, who consulted again for breakthrough low back pain, which was finally diagnosed as a penetrating ulcer of the abdominal aorta, treated endovascularly

Acupuncture for biliary colic: a systematic review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Biliary colic (BC) is a severe pain associated with nausea and vomiting, which is the most common symptom among the gallstone population. This protocol proposes a methodology for conducting a systematic review and meta-analysis that aims to assess the benefits and safety of acupuncture in patients with BC. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Clinical trials will be identified through nine databases from inception to December 2020, using Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), MEDLINE, Embase, Allied and Complementary Medicine Database (AMED), CINAHL, China National Knowledge…

Enterobius Vermicularis: A Parasitic Cause of Appendicular Colic.

Enterobius vermicularis is the most commonly identified parasite incidentally found within the appendix of a clinically diagnosed appendicitis. This parasitic cause of appendicular colic, primarily affecting children, is an important cause of negative appendicectomy. We report an unusual and interesting case of a young female who presented with clinical features of acute appendicitis. Laparoscopic appendicectomy revealed the presence of an Enterobius vermicularis infestation originating from the lumen of her vermiform appendix. Our case report is supplemented with a review of the literature, a…

Prevalence of intra-abdominal hypertension in horses with colic.

OBJECTIVE: To determine an abdominal pressure cutoff value for intra-abdominal hypertension (IAH) in the horse and characterize IAH in horses with acute colic. DESIGN: Prospective clinical cohort. SETTING: University teaching hospital. ANIMALS: Nine healthy adult horses and 56 horses with acute colic. INTERVENTIONS: Ventral intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) was measured in triplicate at end expiration and averaged. Each colic case was classified as medical or surgical and large intestine (LI) or small intestine (SI). Management and final outcome (alive, euthanized, or died) were recorded. IAH…

Two sisters with a rare cause of infantile colic.

INTRODUCTION: Infantile colic is a major parenthood challenge. For medical practitioners, even at the highest specialised levels, the management is never less challenging. This is a case report of two sisters who presented with typical symptoms of infantile colic. However, after a lengthy journey of workups, they were found to have a rare cause of those symptoms, requiring surgical repair. PRESENTING HISTORY: A female baby born at term was initially diagnosed to have infantile colic. As the symptoms did not improve at the age of 3 months, she was referred to a paediatrician who switched her f…

Recurrent Renal Colic in a Patient with Munchausen Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: In most of the cases regarding children, factitious disorders (FDs) are intentionally produced by parents. Less attention is paid to FDs in which a child or adolescent intentionally induces or falsifies the disease to attain a patient's role. CASE PRESENTATION: A 13-year-old immigrated and adopted boy previously underwent an operation for renal joint syndrome and was affected by recurrent episodes of renal colic. The boy was admitted reporting acute left flank pain with scars on the mucous face of his prepuce and had a recent previous hospitalization for the same reason. Laborator…

Enzyme pattern of biliary colic: A counterintuitive picture.

AIM: To evaluate the diagnostic value of serial biochemical blood tests in the diagnosis of biliary colic. METHODS: Files were reviewed of 1039 patients who were admitted to the Share'e Zedek Medical Center emergency department between the years 2012-2013, and received the coding of acute biliary disease. Of these, the first 100 cases were selected that met the following criteria: (1) a diagnosis of biliary colic or symptomatic cholelithiasis; (2) at least two biochemical blood tests performed; and (3) 18 years of age or older. Patients with other acute biliary diseases were excluded. The bio…

Exploring hypotheses and rationale for causes of infantile colic.

BACKGROUND: Infantile colic is a frequent problem in neonates and infants. This review addresses current management including the results for nutrient modifications; soy-based formulas; and prebiotics, probiotics, and synbiotics. PURPOSE: Given the evidence that there is still an unmet clinical need, as current treatments are incompletely efficacious, we have examined the evidence around three hypothetical mechanisms that could potentially be involved in etiopathogenesis of infantile colic: immaturity of bile acid mechanisms that alter intraluminal and absorptive mechanisms, immaturity in mot…
