Metachronous Mesorectal Recurrence after Colectomy for Ascending Colon Cancer.

BACKGROUND: An isolated metachronous recurrence in the mesorectum from a primary ascending colon cancer is a rare finding that has not been previously reported. This may represent a form of retroperitoneal spread, sometimes referred to as "drop metastasis," which is an uncommon mechanism for metachronous recurrence. CASE PRESENTATION: A 38-year-old male presented to the Emergency Department in January of 2018 with profound anemia. A colonoscopy revealed innumerable colonic polyps. He reported having multiple family members diagnosed with colon cancer and was subsequently diagnosed with famili

Incidental Ascending Colon Ganglioneuroma in the Setting of Hematochezia.

Ganglioneuromas are slow-growing hamartomatous tumors that are rarely found in the colon. There are three subtypes of ganglioneuromas: polypoid ganglioneuroma, ganglioneuromatous polyposis, and diffuse ganglioneuromatosis. They are differentiated depending on their endoscopic and histological characteristics. Patients with colonic ganglioneuroma may present with nonspecific symptoms; however, they are usually asymptomatic. We present a case of hematochezia, where an ascending colon ganglioneuroma was found incidentally on diagnostic colonoscopy. We will explain how to distinguish the three sub

Ascending Colon Schwannoma Surgically Treated after Accurate Preoperative Diagnosis.

Colorectal schwannomas are rare and usually benign gastrointestinal mesenchymal tumors. However, these tumors are often overtreated, possibly owing to misleading malignant potential. To our knowledge, there have been no previous reports of ascending colon schwannoma preoperatively diagnosed as benign schwannoma. Herein, we report a case of ascending colon schwannoma accurately diagnosed by endoscopic biopsy and successfully treated by wedge resection. The patient was a 76-year-old woman with complaints of bloody stool. She had no relevant past medical history. Radiological findings revealed a

Transmesocolic hernia of the ascending colon with intestinal obstruction.

An internal hernia may be either congenital or acquired. The reported incidence of such hernias is 1-2%. In rare cases, internal hernias are the cause of small bowel obstruction, with a reported incidence of 0.2-0.9%. Transmesocolic hernia of the ascending colon is especially rare. We report a case of transmesocolic hernia of the ascending colon with intestinal obstruction diagnosed preoperatively. A 91-year-old Japanese female was admitted to our hospital with abdominal distention and vomiting of 3 days duration. She had no past history of any abdominal surgery. Abdominal examination revealed

Characterization of the ascending colon fluids in ulcerative colitis.

PURPOSE: To characterize the fluid composition in ascending colon of fasted adults with ulcerative colitis in relapse and in remission with a view to predicting variations on dosage form performance in the lower inflamed gut. METHODS: Twelve patients participated in a two-phase, crossover study. Enrollment to the relapse phase (Phase A) and designation of the remission state for the second colonoscopy (Phase B) were based on Clinical Rachmilewicz Index values. Samples were analyzed for pH and buffer capacity immediately upon collection. After ultracentrifugation, osmolality, surface tension,

Mucinous cystadenoma of the ascending colon: a novel presentation.

Mucinous cystadenomas usually occur in the appendix, ovaries and pancreas. This is the first report to describe mucinous cystadenoma of the ascending colon. A 32-year-old female presented with abdominal pain. Radiographic studies demonstrated a space-occupying lesion in the ascending colon associated with intussusception. Right colectomy revealed a cystic mass within the ascending colon that contained thick mucin and was lined by mucin-producing columnar epithelium. Clinical and pathologic features with a brief review of the literature are presented.

Staging cecal and ascending colon carcinoma with computed tomography.

Operable subserosal and transserosal and inoperable cecal and ascending colon carcinomas can be differentiated by computed tomography (CT). Invasion of the posterior peritoneal reflection produces recognizable changes on CT, which, with or without adjacent muscle invasion, are indicative of tumor nonoperability.

Double zonal aganglionosis with a skipped oligoganglionic ascending colon.

We report a case of aganglionosis which involved the rectum, entire colon, appendix, terminal ileum but spared the ascending colon. This case was considered to represent for so-called double zonal aganglionosis. Histologically, the spared ascending colon proved to be an oligoganglionic segment. This may be the first documentation of a skipped oligoganglionic colon in double zonal aganglionosis.

Retroperitoneal Abscess Revealing Ascending Colon Adenocarcinoma: A Case Report.

Colon cancer is a common malignancy that can pose significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges, especially when complicated by atypical presentations such as retroperitoneal abscess formation. We present the case of a 50-year-old Caucasian man with no significant medical history who initially presented in the emergency department due to a right lumbar abscess that had been incised at another facility. Imaging revealed a retroperitoneal abscess confined to the retroperitoneum. Initial conservative management with antibiotics and drainage was undertaken; however, subsequent imaging revealed

Mantle cell lymphoma presenting as intussuscepting ascending colon mass.

Malignant lymphoma is a rare cause of gastrointestinal intussusception in adults, accounting for less than 1% of all cases of intussusception. This is a case of a South-East Asian woman in her 50s, presenting with intermittent abdominal pain, loose stools and weight loss. CT of the abdomen and pelvis showed an irregular mass causing ileocolic intussusception and she underwent emergency open right hemicolectomy with end ileostomy. Intraoperatively, her bowel was covered with lymphoma nodules, and bulky mesenteric nodules of small bowel and colon were seen. The histology shows mantle cell lympho
