Marine debris ingestion by cetaceans stranded on the coast of Southern Brazil.

The Southwestern Atlantic Ocean (SWAO) is a global biodiversity hotspot where the impact of plastic pollution on cetaceans remains poorly understood. This study evaluated debris ingestion in cetaceans stranded along the southern Brazilian coast from 2015 to 2020. Of the 884 individuals with analyzed gastrointestinal contents, representing 22 species, debris was found in 10.1% of cases, with coastal species being the most vulnerable. The endangered Franciscana dolphin (Pontoporia blainvillei) showed the highest ingestion rate (17.9%). Pathological analysis of a subsample (n = 20) revealed that

Pyogranulomatous obliterative laryngotracheitis by Rhizopus arrhizus (syn. R. oryzae) in a free-ranging Atlantic spotted dolphin Stenella frontalis.

We report the gross and microscopic findings and molecular identification of fungal hyphate infection in a juvenile female Atlantic spotted dolphin Stenella frontalis found dead off Arguineguin, Gran Canaria (Canary Islands, Spain). On necropsy examination, the animal had a large cranial intrathoracic mass and multiple variably-sized nodules throughout the larynx and trachea that obliterated the lumen. Microscopically, the masses were composed of abundant pyogranulomatous inflammation with numerous fungal hyphae. These were pauciseptate (coenocytic) and had non-parallel walls, non-dichotomous

Herpesvirus infection in marine mammals: A retrospective molecular survey of stranded cetaceans in the Portuguese coastline.

Herpesvirus (HVs) infection has already been reported in cetaceans, but available information on its epidemiology is scarce. In this study we surveyed a total of 179 cetaceans belonging to 6 different species. Samples were obtained from cetaceans stranded along the Portuguese coastline, belonging to populations that roam the north-east region of the Atlantic Ocean. Detection of HVs was performed by conventional nested PCR. Amplicons were sequenced by Sanger's method and sequences used to construct phylogenetic trees by Maximum Likelihood method. Our results show that prevalence of positive sam

Dental pathology in dolphins (Cetacea: Delphinidae) from the southern coast of Brazil.

Pathological processes observed in the stomatognathic systems of mammalian species are a useful source of information about the habits, evolution and general health of such animals. Studies of pathological conditions on teeth are common in humans and other primates, but rare in wild animals in general and marine mammals in particular. For cetaceans, previous studies provided scanty records of dental anomalies in a few species. This is the first broad and systematic inventory of dental pathology in dolphins. Specimens stored at scientific collections from the southern coast of Brazil were visua

Characterization of a Brucella sp. strain as a marine-mammal type despite isolation from a patient with spinal osteomyelitis in New Zealand.

Naturally acquired infection of humans with a marine mammal-associated Brucella sp. has only been reported once previously in a study describing infections of two patients from Peru. We report the isolation and characterization of a strain of Brucella from a New Zealand patient that appears most closely related to strains previously identified from marine mammals. The isolate was preliminarily identified as Brucella suis using conventional bacteriological tests in our laboratory. However, the results profile was not an exact match, and the isolate was forwarded to four international reference

An assessment of temporal, spatial and taxonomic trends in harmful algal toxin exposure in stranded marine mammals from the U.S. New England coast.

Despite a long-documented history of severe harmful algal blooms (HABs) in New England coastal waters, corresponding HAB-associated marine mammal mortality events in this region are far less frequent or severe relative to other regions where HABs are common. This long-term survey of the HAB toxins saxitoxin (STX) and domoic acid (DA) demonstrates significant and widespread exposure of these toxins in New England marine mammals, across multiple geographic, temporal and taxonomic groups. Overall, 19% of the 458 animals tested positive for one or more toxins, with 15% and 7% testing positive for

3D evaluation of the maxillary sinus volumes in patients with bilateral cleft lip and palate.

One of the most common congenital anomalies of the head and neck region is a cleft lip and palate. This retrospective case-control research aimed to compare the maxillary sinus volumes in individuals with bilateral cleft lip and palate (BCLP) to a non-cleft control group. The study comprised 72 participants, including 36 patients with BCLP and 36 gender and age-matched control subjects. All topographies were obtained utilizing Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) for diagnostic purposes, and 3D Dolphin software was utilized for sinus segmentation. Volumetric measurements were taken in cubic mi

Olfactory receptor multigene family in vertebrates: from the viewpoint of evolutionary genomics.

Olfaction is essential for the survival of animals. Diverse odor molecules in the environment are detected by the olfactory receptors (ORs) in the olfactory epithelium of the nasal cavity. There are ~400 and ~1,000 OR genes in the human and mouse genomes, respectively, forming the largest multigene family in mammals. The relationships between ORs and odorants are multiple-to-multiple, which allows for discriminating almost unlimited number of different odorants by a combination of ORs. However, the OR-ligand relationships are still largely unknown, and predicting the quality of odor from its m

Kelp and dolphin gulls cause perineal wounds in South American fur seal pups (Arctocephalus australis) at Guafo Island, Chilean Patagonia.

During five reproductive seasons, we documented the presence, extent and origin of perineal wounds in South American fur seal pups (Arctocephalus australis) on Guafo Island, Northern Chilean Patagonia. The seasonal prevalence of perineal wounds ranged from 5 to 9%, and new cases were more common at the end of the breeding season (February), when pups were on average two months old and were actively expelling hookworms (Uncinaria sp). Histologically, wounds corresponded to marked ulcerative lymphoplasmacytic and histiocytic dermatitis with granulation tissue and mixed bacterial colonies. In 201

Renal lesions in cetaceans from Brazil.

This study reports the occurrence of renal lesions in cetaceans from the coast of Brazil subjected to necropsy examination between 1996 and 2011. The animals (n = 192) were by-caught in fishing nets, were found dead on beaches or died despite attempted rehabilitation. Kidney samples were evaluated grossly and microscopically and, depending on the histopathological findings, immunohistochemical and ultrastructural analyses were conducted. Due to autolysis, a diagnosis was reached in only 128 animals, of which 82 (64.1%) had kidney lesions. Cystic renal disease was the most common lesion observe

Comparative pathology of nocardiosis in marine mammals.

Nocardia spp. infections in mammals cause pyogranulomatous lesions in a variety of organs, most typically the lung. Members of the Nocardia asteroides complex are the most frequently recognized pathogens. Nine cases of nocardiosis in free-ranging pinnipeds and 10 cases of nocardiosis in cetaceans were evaluated. Host species included the hooded seal (Cystophora cristata, n = 8), leopard seal (Hydrurga leptonyx, n = 1), Atlantic bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus, n = 4), beluga whale (Delphinapterus leucas, n = 4), and killer whale (Orcinus orca, n = 2). The most common presentation of noc

Entomophthoromycosis due to Conidiobolus.

Entomophthoromycosis due to Conidiobolus coronatus is a granulomatous infection characterized by lesions that originate in the inferior turbinate, spread through ostia and foramina to involve the facial and subcutaneous tissues and paranasal sinuses. The majority of the cases have been described from areas of tropical rainforest in West Africa, agricultural and outdoor workers (aged 20-60 years) being the ones most frequently affected. The fungus is common in soil and decaying vegetation. Infection probably occurs by implantation of the spores of the fungus in nasal mucosa. C. incongruus is a

Molecular mechanisms underlying nuchal hump formation in dolphin cichlid, Cyrtocara moorii.

East African cichlid fishes represent a model to tackle adaptive changes and their connection to rapid speciation and ecological distinction. In comparison to bony craniofacial tissues, adaptive morphogenesis of soft tissues has been rarely addressed, particularly at the molecular level. The nuchal hump in cichlids fishes is one such soft-tissue and exaggerated trait that is hypothesized to play an innovative role in the adaptive radiation of cichlids fishes. It has also evolved in parallel across lakes in East Africa and Central America. Using gene expression profiling, we identified and vali

Candida Infections in Marine Mammals: Epidemiology, Antifungal Resistance, and One Health Implications.

Candida albicans is currently considered one of the most significant fungal pathogens in cetaceans and pinnipeds and the spread of antifungal-resistant strains pose significant threats to animal health and One Health concerns. Although C. albicans is the most commonly detected species, non-albicans Candida (NAC) species, including C. tropicalis, C. parapsilosis and Nakaseomyces glabratus and the multidrug-resistant C. auris, have been recognized in captive dolphins. This review examines the clinical patterns observed in marine mammal taxa: cetaceans are most commonly vulnerable to respiratory

Non-syndromic hypodontia of maxillary lateral incisors and its association with other dental anomalies.

BACKGROUND: Tooth agenesis (TA) is the developmental absence of one or more teeth and is the most common craniofacial disorder in humans. Maxillary lateral incisor agenesis (MLIA) is a specific subtype of TA and can have esthetic, functional, and psychosocial implications for patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of MLIA amongst patients with non-syndromic tooth agenesis, as well as its association with other dental anomalies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The dental records of 240 patients with non-syndromic congenitally missing teeth treated at the University of Alabama at

Modeling Skin Mark Temporal Variations to Estimate the Sex of Delphinids with Low Sexual Dimorphism: Implications for Management and Conservation.

Sex ratio is an important population metric in animal conservation, but its study in marine species with low sexual dimorphism is often challenging. This work aimed to apply the principles of skin mark analysis to a cetacean species to test its ability to identify sex differences in markings and build a sex-discrimination model exclusively based on photographic material. The common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) was chosen as the model species, and skin marks and their progression over time were identified and measured across the whole-body surface of individuals on photographs acquir

A retrospective study of the prevalence of calcium oxalate crystals in veterinary Aspergillus cases.

Fungi in the genus Aspergillus are some of the most common fungal pathogens in veterinary species, primarily affecting the respiratory tract. In both human and veterinary cases, calcium oxalate crystals have been documented in sites of Aspergillus infection. Cases in multiple species (16 birds, 15 horses, 5 dogs, 1 ox, and 1 dolphin) were identified that had either positive cultures for Aspergillus sp., or had conidiophores present that could be identified as belonging to the genus Aspergillus. Histologic slides were examined to confirm the presence of oxalate crystals and how often they were
