Communication in genetic counselling.

The importance of genetic counselling is being emphasized to an increasing degree, especially in view of advancements in the field of prenatal diagnosis and in methods of practical primary prevention. Genetic counselling is a process allowing specific information to be made available to clients in a specific manner. It only recently became apparent that knowledge about the process of the transmission of information in genetic counselling was inadequate and that re-evaluation was necessary. In genetic counselling communication is characterized by a distinctive type of psychodynamics in which ph

Drowning: community aspects.

One hundred and ninety-six fatal immersion accidents occurred in Geelong and district during the 20-year period, 1959 to 1978. Of 54 drownings in children aged 16 years and younger, 43 (80%) occurred in males and 33 (61%) in fresh water. All 14 drownings in children under four years of age occurred in fresh-water sites, 12 of which were about the home. Immediate and optimal resuscitative measures in such children are extremely important.

Familial communicating syringomyelia.

Calssical cervical syringomyelia was found in 3 members of one family. All 3 underwent air myelogram, and a Chiari malformation type I and postural collapse of the spinal cord was found in each case. An affected 7-year-old boy was discovered after a clinical and radiological survey of 8 first-degree relatives on the basis of mild scoliosis, pyramidal tract signs in the lower limbs and enlarged sagittal diameter of the cervical canal. One other member had basilar impression of the skull but no neurological abnormalities. No positive correlation was found between either the size of the cystic co

Autoimmunity in a rural community.

As part of a long term prospective study, sera from 3492 subjects, over 90% of the adult population of the rural Australian town of Busselton, were tested by indirect immunofluorescence for various autoantibodies, and by latex particle agglutination for rheumatoid factor. Autoantibodies were detected in 21·6% of all subjects and the overall prevalence increased with age in both sexes. A dip in the age prevalence curve of autoantibodies amongst subjects aged 75–80 years preceded a terminal sharp rise. The greater prevalence in females, 27·5%, than in males, 13·7%, was accounted for by autoantib

Causation, meaning, and communication.

The words we use to describe what happened shape what comes to a listener's mind. How do speakers choose what causal expressions to use? How does that choice impact what listeners imagine? In this article, we develop a computational model of how people use the causal expressions "caused," "enabled," "affected," and "made no difference." The model first builds a causal representation of what happened. By running counterfactual simulations, the model computes several causal aspects that capture the different ways in which a candidate cause made a difference to the outcome. Logical combinations o

The 'art' of communication therapy.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: An overview of research exploring communication rehabilitation published between 2022 and 2024. There is limited research in the field so this timely review offers the clinician an insight into the available literature and the gaps that exist. RECENT FINDINGS: The review identified four main themes related to communication and speech rehabilitation; articulation and intelligibility, measures of function following surgical interventions, therapeutic interventions and their variability and quality of life outcomes. SUMMARY: Clinicians may benefit from identifying organizatio

[Community acquired gastroenteritis].

Gastrointestinal infections are widespread and a major cause of global mortality, mainly affecting young children and the elderly. In Germany, each resident typically experiences one episode yearly. After COVID-19 pandemic, gastrointestinal infection rates have significantly increased again. Acute gastroenteritis typically presents with sudden stool changes, vomiting, and fever. In Germany, common pathogens include norovirus, rotavirus, Campylobacter spp., and Salmonella spp. New German guidelines on infectious gastroenteritis (published 2023) reflect recent studies and international treatment

[Community-acquired pneumonia].

RISK FACTORS FOR SEVERE COURSES: The CRB-65 score is recommended as a risk predictor, as well as consideration of unstable comorbidities and oxygenation. GROUPING OF COMMUNITY-ACQUIRED PNEUMONIA: Community-acquired pneumonia is divided into 3 groups: mild pneumonia, moderate pneumonia, severe pneumonia. Whether there is a curative vs palliative treatment goal should be determined early. DIAGNOSTIC RECOMMENDATION: An X-ray chest radiograph is recommended to confirm the diagnosis, also in the outpatient setting if possible. Sonography of the thorax is an alternative, asking for additional imag

Haptic Communication of Language.

In this review, the development of communication systems and devices that convey language tactually is examined, first from an historical perspective focusing on the communities who use the tactile modality to substitute for impairments in vision and/or hearing. Then, the more recent developments in wearable tactile communication systems for conveying text and speech to those without sensory impairments are reviewed. The performance of tactile display technology developed for these user communities is discussed in the context of the proficiency achieved by skilled users of natural methods of t

Community-Acquired Pneumonia.

Community-acquired pneumonia is an important cause of morbidity and mortality. It can be caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi and can be prevented through vaccination with pneumococcal, influenza, and COVID-19 vaccines. Diagnosis requires suggestive history and physical findings in conjunction with radiographic evidence of infiltrates. Laboratory testing can help guide therapy. Important issues in treatment include choosing the proper venue, timely initiation of the appropriate antibiotic or antiviral, appropriate respiratory support, deescalation after negative culture results, switching to
