Low-cost remote patient monitoring system based on reduced platform computer technology.

Telemedicine is a well-accepted method providing healthcare benefits to people over long distances. However, in normal telemedicine practices, dedicated complex hardware and network backbones for data collection and communication make the system unintelligible to the common man. Centralization of telemedicine units also makes it accessible only to the immediate surrounding community. In an attempt to address these issues, a study aimed at developing a low-cost remote patient monitoring (RPM) system based on reduced platform computer technology has been carried out. The main focus of the work w

Network Biology: Current Status, Applications, Challenges, and Future Prospects.

Network biology provides a systems-level framework for understanding how interactions among molecular components, cells, microbial communities, tissues, and organs generate biological function and disease phenotypes. Recent advances in multiomics, single-cell and spatial profiling, network inference, organoid and organ-on-chip technologies, computational modeling, and artificial intelligence have shifted the field from static molecular maps toward dynamic, multiscale, and predictive network models. Major branches include molecular interaction networks, intracellular regulatory networks, single

[Virtual endoscopy with a volumetric reconstruction technic: the technical aspects].

OBJECTIVE: We analyze the peculiar technical features of virtual endoscopy obtained with volume rendering. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Our preliminary experience is based on virtual endoscopy images from volumetric data acquired with spiral CT (Siemens, Somatom Plus 4) using acquisition protocols standardized for different anatomic areas. Images are reformatted at the CT console, to obtain 1 mm thick contiguous slices, and transferred in DICOM format to an O2 workstation (Silicon Graphics, Mountain View CA, USA) with processor speed of 180 Mhz, 256 Mbyte RAM memory and 4.1 Gbyte hard disk. The soft

A maturity model framework for federated networks of trusted research environments.

INTRODUCTION: A Trusted Research Environment (TRE) is a highly secure computer system where sensitive data is stored that researchers can access remotely and make use of in a safe setting. TREs can form federated networks when they have overlapping objectives, such as providing data access to the same researchers for the same project. However, there is variation in the design and implementation of TREs. This makes it difficult for these systems to interoperate without guidance on the technical pathway that should be followed to achieve federation maturity, and resources to assess the current s

Computational anatomy: the cerebellar microzone computation.

The cerebellum is a large brain structure. Most of the mass and volume of the cerebellum is made up by the cerebellar cortex. The outer layer of the cerebellar cortex is divided functionally into long, thin strips called microzones. We argue that the cerebellar microzone computation is the aggregate of simple unit computations and a passive effect of anatomy, unaided and unlearned, which we recreate in silico. This is likely to polarise opinion. In the traditional view, data processing by the cerebellum (stated very briefly) is the effect of learned synaptic changes. However, this has become d

Early Detection and Control of the Next Epidemic Wave Using Health Communications: Development of an Artificial Intelligence-Based Tool and Its Validation on COVID-19 Data from the US.

Social media networks highly influence on a broad range of global social life, especially in the context of a pandemic. We developed a mathematical model with a computational tool, called EMIT (Epidemic and Media Impact Tool), to detect and control pandemic waves, using mainly topics of relevance on social media networks and pandemic spread. Using EMIT, we analyzed health-related communications on social media networks for early prediction, detection, and control of an outbreak. EMIT is an artificial intelligence-based tool supporting health communication and policy makers decisions. Thus, EMI

MetaCCI: meta cell-cell interaction inference and its application to CCIs characteristics of MDS.

MOTIVATION: Cell-cell interactions (CCIs) are fundamental to multicellular organisms and play crucial roles in diverse biological processes and disease mechanisms. Understanding CCIs is vital for deciphering disease pathogenesis and developing therapeutic strategies. Although numerous computational methods have been developed to infer CCIs from complex biological data, most existing approaches rely primarily on single-gene expression levels and ligand-receptor databases, often failing to capture the nuanced network-wide changes characteristic of disease states. RESULT: We propose MetaCCI, a n

Information technology and the role of WMDA in promoting standards for international exchange of hematopoietic stem cell donors and products.

Nearly half of the unrelated hematopoietic SCTs facilitated worldwide involves an exchange of products between countries. The process is information intensive and requires coordination through regional hubs of complex data transactions of demographic, clinical and genetic information, laboratory samples and results. Each registry has developed its own unique systems for representing data and process leading to transplantation. The WMDA Information Technology Working Group was formed in the autumn of 2001 as a forum to discuss and develop standards for information technology (IT) in support of

An open and reconfigurable wireless sensor network for pervasive health monitoring.

OBJECTIVES: Sensor networks constitute the backbone for the construction of personalized monitoring systems. Up to now, several sensor networks have been proposed for diverse pervasive healthcare applications, which are however characterized by a significant lack of open architectures, resulting in closed, non-interoperable and difficult to extend solutions. In this context, we propose an open and reconfigurable wireless sensor network (WSN) for pervasive health monitoring, with particular emphasis in its easy extension with additional sensors and functionality by incorporating embedded intell

Development of a broadband telemedical network based on internet protocol in the Asia-Pacific region.

OBJECTIVES: To promote the exchange of knowledge and standardization of medical procedures and medical systems in the Asia-Pacific region, we established a medical network with high-quality moving images over broadband Internet lines in February 2003. METHODS: Real-time teleconferences and live demonstrations with medical-quality videos, broadcast via the Digital Video Transport System, have been used to teach surgical techniques and other medical procedures across national borders. The Asia-Pacific Advanced Network (APAN) committee in August 2005 formally approved our proposal to establish a

The HL7 Clinical Document Architecture.

Many people know of Health Level 7 (HL7) as an organization that creates health care messaging standards. Health Level 7 is also developing standards for the representation of clinical documents (such as discharge summaries and progress notes). These document standards make up the HL7 Clinical Document Architecture (CDA). The HL7 CDA Framework, release 1.0, became an ANSI-approved HL7 standard in November 2000. This article presents the approach and objectives of the CDA, along with a technical overview of the standard. The CDA is a document markup standard that specifies the structure and sem

Lesion detection of chest X-Ray based on scalable attention residual CNN.

Most of the research on disease recognition in chest X-rays is limited to segmentation and classification, but the problem of inaccurate recognition in edges and small parts makes doctors spend more time making judgments. In this paper, we propose a lesion detection method based on a scalable attention residual CNN (SAR-CNN), which uses target detection to identify and locate diseases in chest X-rays and greatly improves work efficiency. We designed a multi-convolution feature fusion block (MFFB), tree-structured aggregation module (TSAM), and scalable channel and spatial attention (SCSA), whi

Design of an integrated model using deep reinforcement learning and Variational Autoencoders for enhanced quantum security.

The need for secure communication systems has driven extensive research into quantum-based security mechanisms, particularly Quantum Key Distribution (QKD). However, traditional QKD systems, within dynamic environments incorporating network fluctuation and attacks, have been relatively limited because static protocols cannot support high key generation rates and security. This work addresses these challenges by proposing the integration of AI and machine learning optimization techniques into quantum communication protocols to enhance both security and efficiency. We here propose three advanced

A noxious agents information system with state-wide participation of the public health service.

With environmental health receiving increased attention by Public Health Services, there is a need to access as efficiently as possible detailed, current, and reliable information of physico-chemical, epidemiological, and toxicological as well as regulatory and legal aspects on this subject. Correspondingly, targets 19 and 35 of WHO's "Health for all 2000" strategy all for information systems to meet these demands. On this basis, a Noxious Agents Information System (NIS) was designed with three components: PC-based information workstations allowing access to portable and online databases; a de

Resting-state connectivity and network parameter analysis in alcohol-dependent males. A simultaneous EEG-MEG study.

There is supporting evidence of alcohol negative effects on the brain: neuroimaging and psychophysiological studies finding anatomical and functional connectivity (FC) changes associated with the dependence process. Thus, the aim of this work was to evaluate brain FC and network characteristics of alcohol-dependent individuals in resting state. For this study, we included males diagnosed with alcohol dependence (N = 25) and a group of healthy individuals (N = 23). Simultaneous EEG-MEG (electroencephalographic and magnetoencephalographic) activity was recorded in 5 min of eyes-closed resting st

Reexamining trait rumination as a system of repetitive negative thoughts: A network analysis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Rumination is strongly associated with risk, maintenance, and worsening of depressive and related symptoms, and it predicts poor treatment response and relapse. More work is needed to clarify the nature and malleability of rumination. We propose reexamining trait rumination as a system of interacting components ("nodes"). METHODS: A regularized partial correlation network was first computed to estimate the functional relations among items from the Ruminative Responses Scale (RRS) (N = 403). We then tested whether items constitute multiple distinguishable sub-network

Optimizing Deep Neural Networks for EEG-Based Speech Recognition: A Multimodal Approach to Assistive Communication.

Speech recognition for individuals with impairments remains a significant challenge due to atypical speech patterns thatconfound traditional acoustic-only models. This study introduces NeuroSpeech, a novel multimodal framework that integrateselectroencephalography (EEG) with acoustic features to improve recognition accuracy, robustness, and efficiency. A large-scale random search identified optimal EEG encoder configurations and feature extraction parameters, with window size and overlap ($p < 0.001$) emerging as critical factors. Explainable AI (XAI) methods, specifically SHAP, provided insig

[Health privacy in the age of digital networks].

Digitization in the health sector embodies opportunities and risks. These consist of patient and data confidentiality. Vulnerability of data concerning integrity and availability can lead to financial losses and to damage of the health of data subjects. Those risks must be tackled by privacy or data protection law. For this purpose we have the European Data Protection Regulation as a comprehensive legal framework and a harmonizing bracket. This framework contains regulations on consent, purpose binding and data transfer, on rights of the data subject, technical and organizational measures and p
