Explainable clinical diagnosis through unexploited yet optimized fine-tuned ConvNeXt Models for accurate monkeypox disease classification.

Deep learning (DL) has had an incredible influence on many different scientific areas over the past couple of decades. Particularly in the field of healthcare, DL strategies were able to outclass other existing methodologies in image processing. The rapid expansion of the monkeypox endemic to over 40 nations apart from Africa has prompted serious worries in the realm of public health. Given that monkeypox can have symptoms that are akin to both chickenpox and measles, early detection can be difficult. Fortunately, due to the developments in artificial intelligence approaches, it can be impleme

Stereology, morphometry, and mapping: the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

The latest developments in computer-based stereology build upon the similarities of classical stereology and computer microscopy to provide refined and effective spatial analyses that also permit mapping of anatomical regions. Classical stereology and computer microscopy have developed along independent pathways as methodologies to provide a quantitative understanding of the structure of the brain. They approach brain morphology and brain morphometry from different points of view. On one hand, stereology has concentrated upon the unbiased numerical estimation of parameters, such as length, are

Computer-aided modelling of three-dimensional maxillofacial tissues through multi-modal imaging.

Recent developments in digital imaging techniques have allowed a wide spread of three-dimensional methodologies based on capturing anatomical tissues by different approaches, such as cone-beam computed tomography, three-dimensional photography and surface scanning. In oral rehabilitation, an objective method to predict surgical and orthodontic outcomes should be based on anatomical data belonging to soft facial tissue, facial skeleton and dentition (maxillofacial triad). However, none of the available imaging techniques can accurately capture the complete triad. This article presents a multi-m

Ab Initio Evaluation of Henry Coefficients Using Importance Sampling.

We present a new algorithm that allows for an efficient evaluation of the Henry coefficient of a guest molecule inside a porous material, which permits to use ab initio energy calculations. The Widom insertion method, which is currently used to compute these Henry coefficients, typically requires millions of energy evaluations. Our new methodology reduces this number by more than 1 order of magnitude, enabling the use of an ab initio potential energy surface. The methodology we propose is reminiscent of the well-known importance sampling technique which is frequently used in Monte Carlo integr

Intra- and inter-observer reliability of determining radiographic sagittal parameters of the spine and pelvis using a manual and a computer-assisted methods.

Sagittal imbalance is a significant factor in determining clinical treatment outcomes in patients with deformity. Measurement of sagittal alignment using the traditional Cobb technique is frequently hampered by difficulty in visualizing landmarks. This report compares traditional manual measurement techniques to a computer-assisted sagittal plane measurement program which uses a radius arc methodology. The intra and inter-observer reliability of the computer program has been shown to be 0.92-0.99. Twenty-nine lateral 90 cm radiographs were measured by a computer program for an array of sagitta

A methodology for deriving the sensitivity of pooled testing, based on viral load progression and pooling dilution.

BACKGROUND: Pooled testing, in which biological specimens from multiple subjects are combined into a testing pool and tested via a single test, is a common testing method for both surveillance and screening activities. The sensitivity of pooled testing for various pool sizes is an essential input for surveillance and screening optimization, including testing pool design. However, clinical data on test sensitivity values for different pool sizes are limited, and do not provide a functional relationship between test sensitivity and pool size. We develop a novel methodology to accurately compute

Case series investigations in cognitive neuropsychology.

Case series methodology involves the systematic assessment of a sample of related patients, with the goal of understanding how and why they differ from one another. This method has become increasingly important in cognitive neuropsychology, which has long been identified with single-subject research. We review case series studies dealing with impaired semantic memory, reading, and language production and draw attention to the affinity of this methodology for testing theories that are expressed as computational models and for addressing questions about neuroanatomy. It is concluded that case se

Multi-scale in-silico toxicological assessment of Ti₃C₂ and Cr₂C MXene nanoparticles at human biological interfaces.

Despite their huge technological interest, practical application of MXene nanomaterials is somehow hampered by their potential toxicity. In this regard, the present work showcases the design and implementation of a full in-silico methodology for the toxicological analysis of nanoparticles (NPs) of two MXenes within a human cell environment, employing cost-effective computational approaches to achieve a preliminary hazard estimation in the absence of experimental data. This study combines computational methodologies of very different nature, from Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations for

Repeatability of kinetic and kinematic measurements in gait studies of the lower limb amputee.

During the last few years considerable attention has been given to the use of gait analysis as a tool for clinical use. The instrumentation for measurement of the kinetics and kinematics of human locomotion was originally designed for research use. Extension of its use into the clinical field calls for simplified methodology and clearly defined protocols with precise identification of the relevant parameters for the analysis. Force platforms, TV-computer and pylon transducer systems were used for collection of kinetic and kinematic data of five normal subjects, 10 below-knee, 10 above-knee and

The evaluation crisis in artificial intelligence-driven computational biology: Pitfalls and solutions.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming computational biology. However, closer scrutiny reveals that many reported results do not hold under rigorous evaluation. This paper identifies prevalent, recurring issues in the field, including narrow datasets, hidden confounders that make supposedly independent test data effectively indistinguishable from the training data (the doppelgänger effect), misleading performance metrics, and over-reliance on overly easy test cases. We argue that meaningful assessment must go beyond metric-centric model evaluation to encompass biological realism,

A novel forensic protocol for age reversal facial approximation from elderly skulls using computed tomography scans, CAD techniques and anthropometric data.

This study presents a detailed protocol for reconstructing a realistic youthful face from the skull of an elderly individual, based on Computed Tomography (CT) scans. The methodology addresses critical age-related changes, including mandibular displacement, tooth loss, and the degradation of supporting bone structures. The soft tissue reconstruction adheres to current forensic anthropology standards, utilizing average soft tissue thickness measurements at key landmarks. These measurements are derived from statistical analyses of large datasets that consider factors like ethnicity, age, and Bod
