Perceived Self-Control is Related to Mental Distress in Patients Entering Substance Use Disorder Treatment.

BACKGROUND: Levels of mental distress are high in patients with substance use disorders (SUD) and investigation of correlates may broaden our understanding of this comorbidity. OBJECTIVES: We investigated self-reported symptoms of mental distress among individuals entering either outpatient opioid maintenance treatment (OMT) or other inpatient SUD treatment and related factors, with a particular focus on perceived self-control. METHODS: A cross-sectional study including substance users (n = 548; mean age 34 years; 27% women) entering treatment at 21 different treatment-centers across Norway,

The Role of Controlled Substance Use in Diversion Outcomes Among Mentally Ill Offenders: A Pilot Study.

Diversion programs offer opportunities to offenders with substance abuse or mental illness to attend treatment as an alternative to incarceration. The present study identified variables associated with drug relapse and recidivism and the moderating role of substance use on recidivism in a diversion sample. Data were collected from 80 clients with psychotic disorders from a diversion program in New York City. Outcomes were examined after 6 and 12 months of program participation. Individuals who used controlled substances other than alcohol or cannabis were more likely to have a positive toxicol…

Low self-control and co-occurrence of gambling with substance use and delinquency among Chinese adolescents.

Relatively little is known about gambling co-morbidity in Asian youth populations. The role of trait self-control in co-morbidity also remains under-explored in the gambling literature. This study examined the association between gambling, substance use and delinquency among Chinese adolescents, and the extent to which these forms of risk behavior are commonly predicted by low self-control. Data from a cross-sectional questionnaire survey of a stratified, random sample of 4,734 high school students aged 12-23 years in Hong Kong were analyzed. The prevalence of gambling pathology, frequency and

Controlled-release oxycodone admissions in public and private substance abuse treatment: associations with organizational characteristics.

Although non-medical use of controlled-release (CR) oxycodone is increasing, little is known about the substance abuse treatment facilities serving individuals dependent on this medication. This study examines the associations between the characteristics of treatment organizations and two dependent variables: any CR-oxycodone admissions and the number of CR-oxycodone admissions in the past six months. Face-to-face interviews were conducted with administrators of 363 publicly funded and 401 privately funded treatment centers in the US. Publicly funded non-profit organizations were less likely t

Patient-control association study of substance P-related genes in unipolar and bipolar affective disorders.

In the search of genes potentially implicated in the aetiology of affective disorders (AD), SUBSTANCE P (SP) pathway is receiving increased interest. SP receptor antagonists, such as MK-869 and L-759274, have been shown to have antidepressant effect. Results from preclinical and human studies implicate SP and its pathway in the pathophysiology of mood disorders. We investigated a possible association between 20 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPS) among four SP-related genes and unipolar and bipolar ad (UPAD and BPAD) in a first sample of 92 UPAD patients and 92 control individuals and in a

Perioperative substance P/NK1R pharmacology: from PONV control to a testable cancer neuro-immune hypothesis.

The perioperative period is increasingly recognized as a biologically active interval in which surgical injury, anesthetic exposure, neuroendocrine stress, pain, opioid use, and innate immune remodeling may influence residual tumor-cell ecology. Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) provides a clinically validated perioperative phenotype of substance P (SP)/neurokinin-1 receptor (NK1R; TACR1) pharmacology, because NK1R antagonists are established antiemetic agents for selected high-risk patients. The relevance of this pharmacology to cancer does not rest on a shared PONV-tumor mechanism; ra

Association of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances with polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome and endocrine abnormalities: A case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS) is a systemic endocrine and metabolic disorder that has been increasingly linked to exposure to environmental endocrine-disrupting chemicals. Although perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) have been implicated as potential contributors, the combined health effects of PFASs mixtures and the potential pathways linking PFAS exposure to endocrine abnormalities remain incompletely understood. METHODS: In this hospital-based case-control study, 109 women with PMOS and 96 healthy controls were recruited. Serum concentrations

Associations between perfluoroalkyl substances and multiple sclerosis in U.S. cohorts compared with NMOSD, MOGAD, and healthy controls.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are persistent environmental contaminants with endocrine and neuroimmune properties, yet relevance to multiple sclerosis (MS) remains unclear. Recent European data suggested MS-PFAS associations may vary by sex. We evaluated sex-stratified and disease-specific PFAS-MS associations in U.S. cohorts and explored endocrine and transcriptomic correlates. METHODS: Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry-derived serum PFHxS, PFOA, and PFOS were quantified in 439 participants (226 MS, 106 healthy controls [HC], 59 neuromyelitis optica spectr

Association between per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances and unexplained recurrent spontaneous abortion: A case-control study in China.

Although prior studies have identified that per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) were associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes, the potential influence of PFASs exposure on unexplained recurrent spontaneous abortion (URSA) remains uncertain. Our case-control study aimed to explore the associations between PFASs and URSA, including 110 URSA cases and 91 controls from Beijing. Concentrations of 15 PFASs in serum were measured using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS). The associations between PFASs and the risk of URSA were then analyzed u
