Human cooperation: second-order free-riding problem solved?

Panchanathan and Boyd describe a model of indirect reciprocity in which mutual aid among cooperators can promote large-scale human cooperation without succumbing to a second-order free-riding problem (whereby individuals receive but do not give aid). However, the model does not include second-order free riders as one of the possible behavioural types. Here I present a simplified version of their model to demonstrate how cooperation unravels if second-round defectors enter the population, and this shows that the free-riding problem remains unsolved.

Self/other organization in human psychological development.

Evidence from the evolution of human cultural behavior and learning, embryology and genetics of the brain, and the behavior of human infants indicates that the critical and uniquely human motives for cooperative imagination and joint interest in objects and tasks are determined by expression of genes and epigenetic neural systems elaboration long before birth, along with essential peripheral organs of perception and motor expression that will serve in communication by rhythmic facial, vocal, gestural, and body movement signals. These cerebral motives continue to exercise their influence on neu

Evolutionary branching and consistency in group cooperation.

Understanding the origins of volunteerism and free-riding is crucial in collective action situations where a sufficient number of cooperators is necessary to achieve shared benefits, such as in vaccination campaigns and social change movements. Despite the importance of attaining behavioral consistency for successful collective action, the theoretical mechanisms behind this process remain largely elusive. Here, we address this issue by studying the evolutionary dynamics of individual cooperativity levels in multiround threshold public goods games. By using adaptive dynamics, we explore how ind

Acute Effect of Exercise with and without Cooperative Activities on Emotion Recognition in Preadolescent Children: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the acute effect of exercise, with and without cooperative activities, on emotion recognition in preadolescent children and its association with parasympathetic activity as well as prosocial behavior and inclusive thinking. METHODS: Using an experimental design, 100 participants ( N = 44 male; age = 11.6 ± 0.6 y) were randomly assigned to a group performing 20-min exercise demanding cooperation (EX+CO), aerobic exercise without cooperation (EX), or a control group (CON) watching a video in a 1:1:1 ratio. Before and after the exercise bout or control co

An Agent-Based Model of Cooperation and Competition in Organizational Systems.

This study proposes a game-theoretic agent-based model to investigate cooperation and competition in workplace environments. The iterated prisoner's dilemma is implemented on a two-dimensional lattice, where agents interact locally and accumulate wealth over time. Two types of agents are considered: fixed probabilistic cooperators, who adopt a constant cooperation probability, and adaptive probabilistic cooperators, whose behavior depends on their accumulated wealth and reputation. Population composition and wealth distribution are quantified using Shannon entropy and the Gini coefficient. Num

Can Leading by Example Alone Improve Cooperation?

Cooperation is essential for the survival of human society. Understanding the nature of cooperation and its underlying mechanisms is crucial for studying human behavior. This paper investigates the impact of leadership on public cooperation by employing repeated sequential public goods games, as well as by examining whether leading by example (through rewards and punishments) can promote cooperation and organizational success. The leaders were assigned randomly and were given the authority to reward or punish. As a result, (1) the leaders showed a strong tendency toward reciprocity by punishin

In this paper, we solve the replicator dynamics for a simple version of the game and analytically categorize the game types into four groups. We find that the second-order free-rider prob …

Becoming resilient: Community-driven change and the Civic Capacity Index.

One of the principal features of successful community governance is that it is collaborative and thus dependent on a community's ability to work together. However, there are no valid, comprehensive means to assess a community's capacity to respond to civic challenges in collaborative ways, and that are predictive of community resilience and well-being. In this study, we describe the conceptual foundations of the Civic Capacity Index (CCI) and the multiple methods used to validate it. Findings from a large statewide sample show the CCI's scales to have high internal reliabilities and conform to

Using Collaborative Model Building to Better Understand the Mechanisms of Alcohol-Involved Sexual Violence on College Campuses: Post Hoc Protocol.

BACKGROUND: The Collaborative Model Building Project to Understand Sexual Violence (CAMPUS) study seeks to address alcohol-involved sexual violence (AISV) by collaboratively developing an agent-based model (ABM) that can support the decisions of college campuses seeking to address this issue among students. As a first step toward ABM development, we used collaborative model building (CMB), an adaptation of group model building, to co-develop a causal loop diagram (CLD) depicting key causes and effects of AISV and opportunities for intervention. Our goal of cocreating a CLD that can be translat

The mosaic of science: Disciplinary diversity and scientific prestige in research groups in Colombia.

Collaboration among science teams is essential for addressing complex global challenges. A key feature of such collaboration is disciplinary diversity; however, its relationship with team performance remains debated. Existing research has focused primarily on high-income countries and has relied on proprietary databases, often overlooking the distinctive scientific ecosystems of middle- and low-income nations. This geographical and methodological bias has created a gap in understanding how team composition affects scientific outcomes in these underrepresented contexts. This study examines a te

If You Want to Go Far, Go Together: Lessons Learned from Quality Improvement Collaboratives in Palliative Care.

An ongoing commitment to quality improvement (QI) is essential in palliative care (PC), where patients are often frail, suffering is pervasive, and time may be short. Multicenter collaboration in QI allows PC teams to share and harness innovations and approaches from colleagues across the country and around the world. In order to learn at scale, PC teams must be able to directly compare their practices through standardized measurement and reporting of program structures, processes of care, and patient- and institution-level outcomes. Several PC projects around the world adopted this approach t

Improvising through ambiguity: Jazz leadership principles for nurse leaders.

This article examines how principles of jazz (improvisation within structure, shared leadership rooted in mutual respect, and embracing mistakes and ambiguity) can inform effective nursing leadership. In increasingly complex health care environments, traditional hierarchical models limit adaptability, whereas a "jazz leadership" approach fosters collaboration, creativity, and resilience. Drawing parallels between jazz ensembles and nursing teams, the author highlights strategies to enhance decision-making, innovation, and succession planning. By cultivating psychological safety, distributed le

Crystallizing Theory Evaluation: A Human-AI Collaborative Framework for Multi-Perspective Nursing Theory Analysis.

The NLN/Jeffries Simulation Theory (JST) occupies an important and debated position in nursing education. It is widely used for its practical value but often criticized for lacking theoretical clarity. Traditional evaluation methods rely on single theoretical perspectives and have not resolved this contradiction, leading to fragmented and incomplete assessments. This study presents a Human-AI collaborative framework for comprehensive meta-theoretical analysis and uses JST as a demonstration case. The framework is based on the concept of crystallization and combines evaluation criteria from Faw

From barriers to cloud-based regulatory collaboration: An industry perspective on accelerating innovation in pharmaceutical manufacturing.

Pharmaceutical manufacturing is changing rapidly as new therapeutic modalities, advanced manufacturing approaches, modern analytical tools, and novel drug-delivery technologies continue to emerge. While the scientific and technical potential of these innovations is clear, their adoption has often lagged due to regulatory challenges. Differences in regulatory expectations across regions, lengthy review timelines, and limited opportunities for coordinated engagement can slow or discourage the implementation of meaningful chemistry, manufacturing, and controls (CMC) advances. This review consider

Why human societies adopt rigid moral rules: The efficiency-robustness trade-off.

Humans are capable of remarkably flexible moral judgment. Yet societies rely on rigid rules-obligations and prohibitions that apply categorically, even when case-by-case reasoning could yield better outcomes. Why would a species capable of flexibility bind itself to rigid rules? We propose that rigid rules arise as social technologies for managing ambiguity about noncooperation. People often have legitimate reasons for failing to cooperate, yet those reasons are typically opaque to observers, allowing opportunists to disguise selfishness as justified hardship. We formalize this idea with a gam

What makes partnerships work? Measuring agreement in participant beliefs regarding 'core' reasons for success.

Successful partnerships between people with different backgrounds and distinct beliefs are essential to solve 21st-century problems. We conducted 44 semi-structured interviews and 80 surveys with participants of academic-nonprofit partnerships. We used Plackett-Luce statistics and cultural consensus analysis to analyze respondent beliefs regarding partnership success. Respondents consistently placed a high value on a subset of 'core' reasons that academic-nonprofit partnerships succeed and exhibited higher-than-expected levels of agreement regarding the order of importance of these 'core' reas

Engagement to collaboration ensures success.

Disruption to our daily business and functional lives is becoming more frequent, complex and costly. As leaders, what do we do with what we know, the support and tools we have, and our knowledge regarding the resources we need to acquire to navigate this disrupted world? One thing is clear: no one can do it alone. This is not a new concept - the ancient Greeks understood the power of the group. This paper argues that collaboration is the key to amplified knowledge, ability, energy, foresight and innovation, as there is obvious synergy when individuals, groups or organisations join together in
