Differentiation of posterior polymorphous dystrophy from other posterior corneal opacities by specular microscopy.

Deep corneal opacities due to posterior polymorphous dystrophy, especially if they are mild, are frequently confused with changes due to oth … ne. The appearances in interstitial keratitis were varied with poor detail in most cases because of corneal opacity. However, fine opacities consistent with ghost vessels were seen in interstitial keratitis and a resolving case showed fine, intersecting straight lines different from the bundles of parallel fine vertical lines of deep corneal striae in keratoconus …

Management of myopic shift and central corneal steepening resulting from superficial corneal opacity in a patient with previous radial keratotomy: a case report.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to report a patient who developed myopic shift and anterior corneal steepening many years following radial keratotomy (RK). The etiology of this myopic shift resulted from central corneal opacity and was successfully managed with supra-stromal keratectomy. CASE PRESENTATION: A 59-year-old woman with a history of radial keratotomy and cataract surgery presented with blurred vision and ocular irritation in both eyes for years. Poor visual acuity and myopic change to -7.0 D were noted upon initial evaluation. Further ophthalmic examination revealed central …

Ipsilateral, Nonrotational Autokeratoplasty (INRA) Enabling Cataract Surgery in Eyes With Severe Ocular Surface Disease and Corneal Opacity.

PURPOSE: In patients with severe ocular surface disease (OSD) and cornea and cataract-related vision impairment, where the risk of allograft rejection after allogeneic corneal transplantation is unacceptably high and cataract surgery impossible because of corneal opacity, cataract extraction may still offer meaningful improvement in vision-related quality of life. We describe ipsilateral, nonrotational autokeratoplasty (INRA) as option to perform open-sky cataract surgery after removal of the central cornea and prevent immune responses by placing back the original host cornea. METHODS: This r…

Investigation of healing strategies in a rat corneal opacity model with polychromatic light and stem cells injection.

Corneal opacities are a major cause of vision loss worldwide. However, the current therapies are suboptimal to manage the corneal wound healing process. Therefore, there is an obvious need to develop new treatment strategies that are efficient in promoting wound healing in patients with severe corneal disorders. In this study, we investigated and compared the efficacy of adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ADMSCs) and photobiomodulation (PBM) with polychromatic light in the NIR (600-1200 nm) alone and in combination, on corneal opacity, inflammatory response, and tissue architecture in a r…

Possible association between viral infection and poor survival of the corneal graft after penetrating keratoplasty in patients with congenital corneal opacity: a cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Congenital corneal opacity (CCO) is a rare disorder. Penetrating keratoplasty (PK) is the main surgical option for CCO, but many factors affect graft survival. Therefore, this study aimed to perform a virological examination of CCO specimens after PK to explore the relationship between virological factors and graft survival after PK. METHODS: This prospective study included consecutive patients (<6 months of age) diagnosed with CCO and treated with PK at Beijing Tongren Hospital from August 2017 to January 2018. Next-generation sequencing was used to detect viral DNA in the CCO sp…

Novel lamellar, flap-based tattooing techniques for corneal opacities in scarred and vascularized blind eyes.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to describe novel, flap-based tattooing techniques for the treatment of disfiguring corneal scars in blind eyes. METHODS: Several new modifications of intrastromal corneal tattooing techniques were performed in 6 patients. In corneas with a low risk of perforation, a large limbus-to-limbus lamellar flap was prepared, and the tattooing dyes were spread over the entire stromal bed. After additional puncturing of the dyes into the stroma, the flap was closed and sutured ("large flap technique"). In fragile corneas where convenient preparation of a large flap wa
