BACKGROUND: Helicobacter (H.) suis causes gastritis and decreased weight gain in pigs. It is also the most prevalent non-Helicobacter pylori Helicobacter species in humans with gastric disease. H. suis is extremely fastidious, and so far, biphasic culture conditions were essential for isolation and culture, making it impossible to obtain single colonies. Hence, cultures obtained from an individual animal may contain multiple H. suis strains, which is undesirable for experiments aiming for instance at investigating H. suis strain differences.

As shown in this study, the immunization of animals with killed vaccines against tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) leads to the formation of specific immunity, depending on the antigenic structure of the vaccine strain and the test strains used for challenge. Vaccines obtained on the basis of the TBE virus strain of the Eastern antigenic variant induced the development of a wider spectrum of specific protective activity than vaccines obtained on the basis of the TBE virus strain of the Western antigenic variant.

The pathogenicity of the Soph-K strain of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus produced by the persistently infected HEp-2-Soph cell culture was investigated in monkeys, white mice and hamsters. All patients with urine culture-confirmed genitourinary tuberculosis (GUTB) diagnosed between 1995 and 2007 at two medical centers in northern Taiwan were included in this retrospective study. Genotypes of 48 preserved Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) isolates from these patients were determined by spoligotyping and double repetitive element PCR (DRE-PCR) analysis. We examined the binding characteristics of three kinds of steroid hormones--estrogen, androgen, and glucocorticoid--in cultured MC3T3-E1 mouse osteoblastic cells by whole-cell binding assay. Japanese encephalitis virus contained in the medium of chronically infected VERO-K43 cell cultures was shown to be sensitive to the effect of RNA-ase, resistant to treatment with urea, to have no hemagglutinating activity. After 2 passages in suckling mouse brain the virus lost its sensitivity to RNA-ase, was inactivated by urea, and its hemagglutinating activity was restored. The importance of Japanese encephalitis virus variability in the mechanism of chronic infection of cell cultures is discussed.
