Frontal delta-beta cross-frequency coupling in high and low social anxiety: An index of stress regulation?

Cross-frequency coupling (CFC) between frontal delta (1-4 Hz) and beta (14-30 Hz) oscillations has been suggested as a candidate neural correlate of social anxiety disorder, a disorder characterized by fear and avoidance of social and performance situations. Prior studies have used amplitude-amplitude correlation (AAC) as a CFC measure and hypothesized it as a candidate neural mechanism of affective control. However, using this metric has yielded inconsistent results regarding the direction of CFC, and the functional significance of coupling strength is uncertain. To offer a better understandi

Atrial Fibrillation in a Patient With an Accessory Pathway.

A 24-year-old man with history of unspecified arrhythmia presented with palpitations and chest pain. Initial electrocardiogram (ECG) revealed irregular tachycardia with varying QRS width: 150 to 200 beats per minute for narrow complexes and 300 beats per minute for wide complexes. Following cardioversion, ECG revealed sinus tachycardia with a preexcitation pattern of positive delta waves in the anterolateral leads and negative delta waves in inferior leads. The patient remained in sinus rhythm and underwent successful ablation of a right posteroseptal accessory pathway. Subsequent ECG showed u

Personalized beta band HD-tACS over the left SMA improves speech and limb movement by modulating prefrontal delta oscillations in neurotypical young adults.

Objective. The supplementary motor area (SMA) demonstrates abnormal beta activity (13-30 Hz) during speech and limb movement tasks in neurological conditions such as Parkinson's disease (PD). Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) has demonstrated promising improvement in motor and non-motor functions by entraining endogenous neural oscillations. We conducted an exploratory study on the modulatory effects of personalized beta high-definition (HD)-tACS over the left SMA on speech production and limb movement.Approach.In a repeated-measures experiment, twenty-two neurotypical young

Region-specific adenosinergic modulation of the slow-cortical rhythm in urethane-anesthetized rats.

Slow cortical rhythm (SCR) is a rhythmic alternation of UP and DOWN states during sleep and anesthesia. SCR-associated slow waves reflect homeostatic sleep functions. Adenosine accumulating during prolonged wakefulness and sleep deprivation (SD) may play a role in the delta power increment during recovery sleep. NREM sleep is a local, use-dependent process of the brain. In the present study, direct effect of adenosine on UP and DOWN states was tested by topical application to frontal, somatosensory and visual cortices, respectively, in urethane-anesthetized rats. Local field potentials (LFPs)

Carbon dioxide-induced panic attacks and quantitative electroencephalogram in panic disorder patients.

The objective of the study was to investigate and compare the brain cortical activity, as indexed by quantitative electroencephalographic (qEEG) power, coherence and asymmetry measures, in panic disorder (PD) patients during an induced panic attack with a 35% CO(2) challenge test and also in a resting condition. Fifteen subjects with PD were randomly assigned to both 35% CO(2) mixture and atmospheric compressed air, in a double-blind study design, with EEG being recorded for a 20-min period. During induced panic attacks we found a reduced right-sided frontal orbital asymmetry in the beta band,

Common and specific genetic influences on EEG power bands delta, theta, alpha, and beta.

It is difficult to study the genetic basis of psychological function/dysfunction due to its etiological complexity. Instead, we studied a biological marker, EEG power, which is associated with various psychological phenotypes and is closer to gene function. Previous studies have consistently demonstrated high heritability of EEG band power, but less is known about how common or specific genes influence each power band. For 519 adolescent twin pairs, spectral powers were calculated for delta, theta, alpha, and beta bands at bilateral occipital and frontal sites. All four bands were entered into

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the spectral characteristics of electroencephalogram (EEG) activity during an olfactory discrimination test. MATERIAL … nition accuracy also had shorter mean reaction times. A negative correlation was identified between delta rhythm power and the number of errors made. CONCLUSIONS: EEG spectral scores can serve as neurophysiological indicators of sensory efficiency in olfactory tests. Notably, some patients may display subtle disturbances in brain activity even without overt s …

Atypical low-frequency cortical encoding of speech identifies children with developmental dyslexia.

Slow cortical oscillations play a crucial role in processing the speech amplitude envelope, which is perceived atypically by children with developmental dyslexia. Here we use electroencephalography (EEG) recorded during natural speech listening to identify neural processing patterns involving slow oscillations that may characterize children with dyslexia. In a story listening paradigm, we find that atypical power dynamics and phase-amplitude coupling between delta and theta oscillations characterize dyslexic versus other child control groups (typically-developing controls, other language disor

Sleep deprivation and Modafinil affect cortical sources of resting state electroencephalographic rhythms in healthy young adults.

OBJECTIVE: It has been reported that sleep deprivation affects the neurophysiological mechanisms underpinning the vigilance. Here, we tested the following hypotheses in the PharmaCog project (www.pharmacog.org): (i) sleep deprivation may alter posterior cortical delta and alpha sources of resting state eyes-closed electroencephalographic (rsEEG) rhythms in healthy young adults; (ii) after the sleep deprivation, a vigilance enhancer may recover those rsEEG source markers. METHODS: rsEEG data were recorded in 36 healthy young adults before (Pre-sleep deprivation) and after (Post-sleep deprivati

Atypical delta-band phase consistency and atypical preferred phase in children with dyslexia during neural entrainment to rhythmic audio-visual speech.

According to the sensory-neural Temporal Sampling theory of developmental dyslexia, neural sampling of auditory information at slow rates (<10 Hz, related to speech rhythm) is atypical in dyslexic individuals, particularly in the delta band (0.5-4 Hz). Here we examine the underlying neural mechanisms related to atypical sampling using a simple repetitive speech paradigm. Fifty-one children (21 control children [15M, 6F] and 30 children with dyslexia [16M, 14F]) aged 9 years with or without developmental dyslexia watched and listened as a 'talking head' repeated the syllable "ba" every 500 ms,

[Features of brain oscillatory activity and cardiac defense in treatment arterial hypertensives].

Stress reactivity of the motivational system of defense can be assessed with the aid the cardiac defense response (CDR) - the reaction of the cardiovascular system to unexpected aversive unconditioned stimulus. The main objective of the study was revealing putative contribution of oscillatory systems of the brain into central pathogenic mechanisms of enhanced blood pressure (BP) stress-reactivity in naive patients with arterial hypertension (AH) of the 1st-2nd degrees (n = 17) and healthy control (n = 19) subjects. Using dynamic registration "beat-by-beat" arterial pressure, and oscillatory ac

Quantitative electroencephalography in idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus: relationship to CSF outflow resistance and the CSF tap-test.

Quantitative electroencephalography from the occipito-parietal region, gait, and psychometric tests were performed in patients with idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) before and after drainage of 40 ml CSF. The results were compared to those in demented controls. The EEG results were also analyzed with respect to possible correlations with clinical, CSF dynamics, and psychometric variables. Significant differences between NPH patients and demented controls were not found neither in baseline EEG variables nor regarding the CSF tap-test-related change in EEG. The EEG-response to the

CORRELATION INDICES OF CEREBRAL HEMODYNAMICS AND ELECTRICAL ACTIVITY IN CHILDREN WITH IMPAIRED MOTOR SKILLS.

The correlations between the indicators of cerebral hemodynamics and electrical activity in children with impaired motor skills of central origin (children with cerebral palsy) were investigated. There is established a high number of links between indicators of rheoencephalogram (REG) and electroencephalogram (EEG) in the left cerebral hemisphere than in the right. In frontomastoidal allocation 19 correlations and in occipitomastoidal - 59 links. We suppose that poor circulation in vertebroplasty-basilar system leads to the defeat of the brain stem, which, with afferent pathways of the reticul

Effect of verapamil on an accessory pathway manifesting as "fatigue phenomenon" in Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome.

Electrophysiologic study was performed in a 52-year-old man with type A ventricular preexcitation. An accessory atrioventricular pathway with no ventriculoatrial conduction was localized to the posteroseptal region. "Fatigue phenomenon," defined as suppression of atrioventricular conduction following rapid pacing, was observed to be provoked by atrial pacing in a rate- and duration-dependent manner. Administration of 5 mg of intravenous verapamil during sinus rhythm abolished the delta waves. These observations may indicate that pathologic changes in the accessory pathway are responsible for t

[Electroencephalographic study of 40 patients with subacute sclerosing panencephalitis].

Among viral diseases, subacute sclerosing panencephalitis is one of the most frequent in Iran (more than 300 cases in two neurological centers and for the last ten years). This paper is devoted to an electroencephalographic study of 40 patients: visual analysis of EEG rhythms (frequency, amplitude, lability, morphology), effects of activation methods, description of pathological EEG patterns (periodic paroxysmal complexes in 38 cases; slow or fast spikes, polyspikes and bifrontal or diffuse spikewaves in 9 cases; localized comitial abnormal patterns in 5 cases; bifrontal delta rhythm in 13 cas…

Absence seizure with generalized rhythmic delta activity.

In seven children, 5-11 years old, who presented with spells of staring or unresponsiveness, hyperventilation reproduced clinical spells that were accompanied on the EEG by generalized, rhythmic, delta activity. The discharges were usually of abrupt onset, extremely high amplitude, recurrent, and prolonged. One spontaneous staring spell, not provoked by hyperventilation, was also accompanied by generalized rhythmic delta activity. All patients had improvement or complete control of their spells and abolition of the EEG changes with ethosuximide or valproate. Delta activity during hyperventilat

Granularity of EEG reactivity in response to stimulation: "Atypical" reactivity in non-sedated and sedated patients.

OBJECTIVE: We describe the EEG phenomenon of increased arrhythmic delta-frequencies upon stimulation without sedating medications ("atypical reactivity") and characterize patients with this pattern. This is currently not differentiated from the expected reactivity pattern of increased faster-frequencies, according to the American Clinical Neurophysiology Society's (ACNS) critical care EEG terminology. METHODS: This was a retrospective single-center study of adult patients (2015-2022) with EEG reactivity defined by arrhythmic delta-frequencies emerging with stimulation. Raw EEGs were reviewed.
