Dentigerous cyst is a type of developmental odontogenic cysts that arises from the crown impacted, embedded or unerupted teeth that standardly managed by Caldwell-luc procedure, which is found to be associated with morbidities and complications. Endonasal endoscopic removal is a minimally invasive approach aiming to prevent morbidities and complications. The aim of this article is to study the advantages of the endonasal endoscopic approach in managing different cases of dentigerous cyst and ectopic teeth. In this article, we reported three different cases (two pediatric and one adult), one pr…

In the present study, we sought to: (a) analyze the p53 gene status in dentigerous cysts (DC) associated with supernumerary teeth (ST) in a pair of siblings with ST, of whom one developed a DC; and (b) conduct a narrative review of the literature on ST associated with DC. Blood samples were obtained, and the isolated DNA was used to amplify exons 4-8 of the p53 gene using specific primers, and subsequently sequenced. No mutations were identified in the coding regions of the p53 gene. A review of the literature revealed a prevalence of DC associated with ST to be as high as 13.6%, and that 83% …

Dentigerous cyts are form of benevolent odontogenic cyts which are related to crowns of permament teeth. Often, they are described as unilocular radiolucent lesions and barely seen in childhood era. This article aims to show a case about 11 year old boy having a dentigerous cyst associated with the mandibular canine and a premolar. Extraction of the primary molars and marsupialization of the lesion is also included in this method of treatment. After 9 months of the treatment, impacted teeth spontaneously erupted. Therefore, if we aim to manage of dentigerous cysts in children conservatively, m…

The objective of this study was to assess the association between the histopathological diagnoses of dentigerous cysts and pericoronal follicles and the positions of impacted third molars. The sample comprised 151 cases, diagnosed as dentigerous cysts and pericoronal follicles. Most patients were female (70.9%), white (90.1%), and age 20 years or older (63.6%). Ninety-eight cases (64.9%) were diagnosed as pericoronal follicles and 53 (35.1%) as dentigerous cysts. Teeth that developed dentigerous cysts were predominantly located in the mandible (84.9%), in a mesioangular position (49.1%), and i…

Amongst the cysts of the jaw dentigerous cyst (DC) is one of the most prevalent types of odontogenic cysts, which is associated with the crown of an unerupted or developing tooth. DC is more commonly seen with mandibular third molar and maxillary canine and rarely other teeth are involved. These cysts seldom associate with supernumerary teeth. The purpose of this article is to describe a case of large dentigerous cyst associated with supernumerary teeth and an ectopic canine, which is a rare presentation along with its management.

Journal of oral pathology & medicine : official publication of the International Association of Oral Pathologists and the American Academy of Oral Pathology2012eng
BACKGROUND: Radicular (RC) and dentigerous cysts (DC) can show a range from little to quite extensive primary/secondary inflammation and it is possible that the variation seen in the fibrous capsule of these cysts might reflect differences in the osteolytic activity. Moreover, the presence of hemorrhagic areas in the fibrous capsule of DC could also contribute to the increase in osteolytic activity. The aim of this study was to compare immunohistochemical expression of nuclear factor κappaB (RANK), RANK ligand (RANKL), and osteoprotegerin (OPG), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and an…

OBJECTIVE: Receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB (RANK), RANK ligand (RANKL) and osteoprotegerin (OPG) are members of the superfamily of ligands and receptors of tumour necrosis factor family involved in bone metabolism. The formation, differentiation and activity of osteoclasts are regulated by these proteins. To clarify the roles of osteoclast regulatory factors in cystic expansion of odontogenic cysts, expression of these proteins were analysed in radicular and dentigerous cysts.
DESIGN: The immunohistochemistry expression of these biomarkers were evaluated and measured in lining epithel…

The dentigerous cyst is one of the most common developmental odontogenic cysts in the jaw. Occurrence of the bilateral dentigerous cyst is uncommon, and frequently associated with syndromes like basal cell nevus syndrome or cleidocranial dysplasia. There are few reports on the presence of bilateral dentigerous cyst in nonsyndromic patients, and most of these are associated with first and third molars. The reported case in this paper is bilateral dentigerous cysts associated with mandibular permanent second premolars, in the absence of any signs of syndrome. To our knowledge bilateral dentigero…

One of the more difficult situations dealt with by orthodontists is the treatment of impacted maxillary canines. This case report describes an impacted canine positioned near the floor of the orbit that was brought into a normal position. Diagnostic records revealed impacted and displaced teeth resulting from a large radiolucent lesion. The patient was referred to an oral surgeon. The lesion was diagnosed as a dentigerous cyst and marsupialized over 12 months. After decompression of the cyst, the impacted teeth were exposed and orthodontically brought into their proper position.

Dentigerous cysts are the most common type of odontogenic cysts and arise from an unerupted tooth. These cysts have stereotypical radiographic and clinical findings. They can be extremely invasive but rarely present as a life-threatening emergency. This case report describes the stabilization and treatment of a 6-year-old mixed breed dog with a dentigerous cyst with concurrent life-threatening hemorrhage. The dog presented with severe oral hemorrhage from the mandibular artery and required multiple blood transfusions. It was ultimately diagnosed with a dentigerous cyst. Complications from dent…

The dentigerous cyst is defined as a pathological cavity whose origin is produced by developmental alterations. Most usual treatment is the enucleation of the cyst with the extraction of the tooth. The current approach tends to preserve the tooth. The aim of this study was to determine the total and partial success of the conservative treatment of the dentigerous cyst in terms of eruption of the associated permanent tooth. Pub-Med, Scopus and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials were searched from January 2012 to December 2023, including patients aged 18 years old or less with a …

Bilateral dentigerous cysts (DC) associated with unerupted mandibular first molars in a non-syndromic pediatric individual are rare. Secondary infections may lead to complications, such as discomfort due to pain, disfigurement caused by enlargement of the cyst with cortical expansion of the jawbone, displacement of teeth and paraesthesia of the adjacent nerve. This case report describes the occurrence of bilateral DC in an eight-year-old patient. Marsupialization was the treatment of choice to preserve the permanent teeth and other adjacent tissues.

BMP-2 and Noggin are expressed in several tissues and participate in cell differentiation and proliferation during odontogenesis and tumor development. We evaluated the immunohistochemical expression of these proteins in ameloblastomas (AMs), odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs), and dentigerous cysts (DCs). The expression in AM (n.20), OKC (n.20), and DC (n.20) was evaluated by the percentage of positive cells and expression intensity, resulting in a total immunostaining score. Analysis of BMP-2 and Noggin revealed positivity in all cases. The Mann-Whitney test showed a statistically significant di…

This article presents the case of an 8-year-old patient who presented with a large radiolucency associated with the maxillary left canine and a supernumerary tooth. A computed tomography scan showed the radiolucency was in close proximity to the roots of the anterior teeth, with no areas of root resorption, and expansion into the left maxillary sinus. The boundaries of the maxillary sinus floor were still preserved. After positive aspiration of intralesional liquid and due to the large size of the radiolucency, a decompression technique was selected to preserve the permanent canine. Surgery wa

Background and aims . Pathological fractures are rare in the maxillofacial region and account for less than 2% of all fractures in this site. They are defined as fractures that take place when bone has been weakened by an underlying pathologic process. Among all pathoses, cysts (although so common in the maxillofacial region) constitute a very small part. Here we report a case of a dentigerous cyst in a 38-year-old man.The cyst was associated with a mandibular second premolar tooth and resulted in a pathologic fracture. Excision of the lesion was performed and bony union was observed after 6 m…
