Fused supernumeraries in deciduous dentition: a case report.

The occurrence of supernumerary teeth and fusion of two teeth is not a very rare findings but the fusion of two supernumeraries especially in primary is very rare. Reported here, is a case of three supernumerary teeth present in the same region, out of which two of them were fused with each other. Since the interference with the normal eruption of the permanent successor was anticipated, the fused supernumeraries were extracted.

Mixed dentition space analysis in a Thai population.

This study produced simple linear regression equations to be used for mixed dentition space analysis for males and females, and sexes pooled in a population living in northeastern Thailand. Measurements of teeth were made to within 0.01 mm on the dental casts of 215 boys and 215 girls (mean age 15.7 years). All dentitions were required to be free of any signs of dental pathology or anomalies. It was found that males had significantly larger teeth than females as represented by summations of mandibular incisor, canine, and premolar widths. ANOVA of regression indicated a close relationship betw…

Osteopenia, abnormal dentition, hydrops fetalis and communicating hydrocephalus.

We describe a single male infant who developed severe hydrops fetalis between 19 and 28 weeks of gestation. After delivery at 32 weeks he was treated by hemofiltration, prolonged ventilation and intravenous feeding. He had hypertelorism, orbital hypoplasia without proptosis, brachydactyly, frontal and temporal bossing of the skull, central hypotonia, communicating hydrocephalus, and severe delay in psychomotor development. Signs of connective tissue disorder included: osteopenia, pathological fracture, yellow/grey discolored teeth, blue sclerae and easy bruising. Laboratory investigations fail

The Clinical Significance of Attached Gingiva in the Natural Dentition.

Background: The attached gingiva (AG) is the portion of the gingiva firmly bound to the underlying alveolar bone and root cementum, rendering it immobile during functioning. Its dense connective tissue attachment contributes to resistance against mechanical challenges, stabilization of the gingival margin, and dissipation of forces transmitted from the alveolar mucosa. Histologically, AG is characterized by a keratinized epithelium supported by dense collagen fiber bundles, which provide structural integrity to the dento-gingival unit. Clinically, the buccal and lingual width of AG is estimate

Infraocclusion in the Primary and Permanent Dentition-A Narrative Review.

The gradual movement of a tooth away from the occlusal plane is called infraocclusion or reinclusion. Reincluded teeth are most often deciduous molars, and permanent teeth are less frequently affected. Depending on the level of the infraocclusion, the severity of the disorder is classified as mild, moderate, or severe. The etiology of the phenomenon is not fully known. Tooth submerging can lead to serious complications, such as abnormal position of adjacent teeth, displacement of the bud of the permanent successor, shortening of the dental arch, or developmental disturbances of alveolar proces

Loss of Functional Dentition is Associated with Cognitive Impairment.

BACKGROUND: Although tooth loss is known to increase the risk of cognitive impairment and dementia, few studies have investigated the association between functional teeth including rehabilitated lost teeth and cognitive functionObjective:We investigated the associations of the numbers of functional teeth and functional occlusal units with cognitive impairment and cognitive function in late life. METHODS: The current study was conducted as a part of the Korean Longitudinal Study on Cognitive Aging and Dementia (KLOSCAD), a community-based elderly cohort study. We analyzed 411 participants who

An odontometric study of tooth dimension in diastematic dentition.

BACKGROUND: One of the causes of the maxillary midline diastema (MMD) may be discrepancy between teeth and maxilla dimension. That can relate to two situations: when teeth have correct size but maxilla is too large or maxilla bone is in the proper size but teeth have reduced dimensions (microdontia). The present study has been conducted to investigate the differences in the linear dimensions of upper central and lateral incisors and canines in diastematic dentition and to compare them with the control group without diastema. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was conducted on Caucasian individu…

Dental anomalies in the primary dentition of Turkish children.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of double teeth, hypodontia, microdontia, and hyperdontia of primary teeth in Turkish children. METHODS: The study group comprised 1149 children (554 girls, 595 boys). The children were examined in twelve local nurseries in Sivas, Turkiye. Clinical data were collected by four dentists according to Kreiborg criteria; which includes double teeth, hypodontia, microdontia, and supernumerary teeth. Statistical analysis of the data was performed using the chi-square test. RESULTS: Dental anomalies were found in 2.0% of children. The

[Caries of permanent dentition in medieval inhabitants of Wrocław].

INTRODUCTION: The study of dentition plays an important role in the reconstruction of the diet and in assessment of the overall health and living conditions of paleopopulations. The aim of this study was to determine the condition of permanent dentition of medieval inhabitants of Wrocław basing on the prevalence and intensity of caries in permanent dentition. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The material consisted of 1156 permanent teeth from 118 skulls recovered from two medieval cemeteries in Wrocław: the parish cemetery at the St. Elisabeth Church (13th-14th century) and the cemetery in Ołbin (12th-1…

Correction of a mutilated dentition with mini-implants as anchorage.

The patient was an adolescent boy, aged 15.6 years, with a mutilated dentition. He had extrusion of the maxillary left first molar because of loss of the mandibular first molar and lingual tilting and rotation of the mandibular second molars. Both left and right second molars were in scissors-bite that was more severe on the left side. By using mini-implants and a TPA with hooks, a 3-mm intrusion was successfully made on the maxillary left first molar. This provided room for mesial movement of the mandibular left second molar. The second molar was protracted into the space of the missing first…

Eruption guidance in the mixed dentition: a case report.

Management of space problems is an important factor in the mixed dentition. The Clear Aligner can carry out minor tooth movement with no brackets bonded to the teeth. In addition, it can provide tooth movement for the following: crowding resolution, space closure, arch expansion or constriction, space maintenance or regaining, intrusion or extrusion, guidance of the eruption, and other interceptive orthodontic treatment.

Eruption chronology of the permanent dentition in Spanish children.

BACKGROUND: Little information is available regarding the eruption chronology of Spanish children. Therefore, it is important to acquire accurate eruption parameters for the Spanish population. AIM: To establish the chronology of the permanent dentition. DESIGN: A cross-sectional study based on a sample of 1123 Spanish Caucasian children ranging from 5 to 15 years of age, from three different schools in Barcelona, Spain. RESULTS: The sample is representative of the Spanish population with regards to age, height and weight; and large enough to achieve the desired 95% confidence level. The re…

Unilateral correction of space loss in the mixed dentition.

Distalization of maxillary molars is indicated for correction of Class II dental malocclusion and for space gain in cases of space deficiency. The ideal treatment with an intraoral fixed appliance for molar distalization should fulfill the following requirements: patient compliance; acceptable esthetics; comfort; minimum anterior anchor loss (as evidenced by inclination of incisors); bodily movement of the molars to avoid undesirable effects and unstable outcomes; and minimum time required during sessions for placement and activations. The purpose of this paper was to present an alternative tr

Identifying the aesthetic and functional determinants in the collapsed dentition.

This patient's treatment involved a complex diagnostic challenge, as well as a challenging clinical sequence due to the utilization of immediate implant placement and restoration after extraction along with immediate prosthodontic restoration with sinus elevation with bone grafting. The inability to have diagnostic patient wax try-ins required a detailed and exacting diagnostic work-up which included significant laboratory diagnostic wax-ups. The utilization of the ACP Parameters of Care for Partial Edentulism for a PDI Class IV patient provided a framework in which care could be planned and e

An unusual distribution of supplemental teeth in the primary dentition.

Supernumerary teeth are more common in the permanent than the primary dentition. In the latter, the majority occur in the maxillary lateral incisor region or as a mesiodens. Indeed, in one study conducted in the USA, all 26 cases of primary supernumerary teeth examined were found to be lateral incisors. This report describes a case presenting with three erupted supernumerary (supplemental) teeth in the primary dentition, including, somewhat unusually, bilateral duplication of maxillary canines.

Time of eruption of primary dentition in Saudi children.

The purpose of the present study was to determine the mean and standard deviation of eruption for primary dentition in children from Saudi Arabia and to compare it with another sample of full-term children who are clinically healthy between the ages of 4-40 months. The results were significantly different from available literature on eruption patterns in children. Moreover, there is a slightly delayed eruption of primary teeth in Saudi children when compared to Caucasians. However, the order of eruption of primary teeth was the same as reported in other studies.

Tooth size in dentitions with buccal canine ectopia.

Much interest has been expressed in recent years regarding various features common to dentitions with palatally displaced canines (PDC), particularly in relation to delayed dental development and reduced tooth size. The aims of the present study were to determine whether dentitions with buccally displaced canines (BDC) have features in common, which may be specific for the condition, when compared with PDC dentitions and those with normally erupting canines. Mesiodistal and buccolingual tooth dimensions were determined for 41 subjects with BDC (21 females and 20 males) aged between 11 and 15 y…

Prevalence of supernumerary teeth in deciduous and mixed dentition.

Supernumerary teeth are the extra teeth which may have either erupted or unerupted in addition to normal dentition and are seen both in deciduous as well as permanent dentition. The incidence of supernumerary teeth shows more frequent occurrence in permanent dentition than deciduous dentition, affecting both the sexes. The etiology of supernumerary teeth is still unknown and not well understood, but thought to be the result from disturbance during the initiation and proliferation stages of tooth development. In the present study an attempt has been made to asses, its prevalence in deciduous an…
