Previous studies have demonstrated problems with implant-supported overdenture attachments, such as denture base fracture and retention loss of the attachment's nylon insert. In this study, three implants were surgically inserted at the anterior mandibular region of 16 completely edentulous men (mean age: 50 years), divided into two groups depending on the received mandibular complete overdenture: a conventional metal-reinforced framework with prefabricated metal housing (Group I) or a CAD/CAM metal-reinforced framework with custom metal housing (Group II). At 3 months (prostheses loading), 6

PURPOSE: We investigated and compared the stress distribution within one- and two-piece mini-implants for overdentures with three different attachments (ball, Locator, and magnet) and two different diameters using three-dimensional finite element (3D FE) analysis and a monotonic bending test. The goal was to identify the most beneficial implant attachment system design for mini-implant overdentures with a lower risk of implant fracture.
METHODS: Twelve 3D FE models simulating a mandible segment with one- and two-piece mini-implants with different attachment systems, diameters, and overdenture

BACKGROUND: Fractures in mandibular implant-retained overdentures are a common complication. However, little is known on the related risk factors and outcome differences when using two conventional diameter or two mini implants.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was first, to evaluate the required maintenance and complications with the overdentures and second, to analyze risk factors for overdenture fractures.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cohort study was conducted in edentulous patients with complete dentures. Patients received either two conventional (4.1 mm in diameter) and two mini (2.9

The multiple loss of primary molars due to caries or other reasons in the primary or mixed dentition can lead to severe mutilation of the developing dentition. It is advisable to construct a removable appliance to maintain the relationship of the remaining teeth and to guide the eruption of the developing teeth in order to prevent the child from developing psychological and speech problems. However, parental and patient cooperation are imperative if the pediatric patient is to exercise the necessary care to maintain the denture in a clean and healthy condition. This case report identifies the

Immediate complete dentures provide patients with improved esthetics and reasonable function following dental extractions. Denture base reinforcement in implant overdentures helps distribute occlusal stress and reduces the risk of denture fracture. This technique describes the fabrication of a digitally designed and subtractively manufactured denture base, a conventional compression-molded denture base for an immediate implant overdenture, and polyetheretherketone frameworks step-by-step. The integration of techniques facilitated a predictable transition to a mandibular implant overdenture for

PURPOSE: This study evaluated whether implant-retained overdentures fabricated using the neutral zone (NZ) technique offer superior long-term oral health related quality of life (OHRQoL) outcomes compared to conventional overdentures (CO) and assess the influence of these techniques on denture stability, patient satisfaction, and maintenance requirements.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study involved 29 edentulous patients (14 in the NZ group and 15 in the CO group) who received mandibular implant-retained overdentures with a minimum two year follow up. Two implants were placed in the mandible f

Fabrication of conventional complete dentures was one of the most commonly advised treatment options to mange edentulous patients since many years. One of the commonly encountered challenging tasks in prosthodontics is a clinical situation in which patients have maxillary completely edentulous arches opposing mandibular natural dentition. This situation can be effectively managed by retaining some of the natural teeth as overdenture abutments. Tooth supported overdenture retained by attachments will improve retention, support and stability, and reduces rate of ridge resorption along with psych

PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate mandibular denture base deformation along with three impression techniques used for implant-retained overdenture.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ten edentulous patients (five men and five women) received two implants in the canine region of the mandible and three duplicate mandibular overdentures which were constructed with mucostatic, selective pressure, and definitive pressure impression techniques. Ball abutments and respective gold matrices were used to connect the overdentures to the implants. Six linear strain gauges were bonded to the lingual polished surf

The peripheral giant cell granuloma is a benign reactive exophytic lesion of unknown etiology occurring on the gingiva and alveolar ridge. Different local causal factors have been associated with this type of lesion. Although peripheral giant cell granuloma is the most common giant cell lesion of the jaws, it is rarely seen in association with implants. This report discusses the etiology and management of a peripheral giant cell granuloma around dental implants in a 60-year-old woman. A new implant-supported prosthesis with adequate marginal adaptation between the restoration and abutments was

Implant attachments of various designs are used to retain, stabilize and sometimes support overdentures. Tissue supported overdentures stabilized and retained by two to four implants are often the restorations of choice due to patient preference, limitations in finances, insufficient available bone to accommodate a greater number of implants, or needed improvements in esthetics, phonetics and oral hygiene. Female retentive sockets in the overdenture base that snap onto male ball abutments offer such advantages as reduction in hydraulic resistance to coupling, lower functional stress on the imp

Achalasia Cardia is an idiopathic esophageal motor disorder distinguished by the loss of esophageal peristalsis and insufficient relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter. The oral manifestation of the disease is dental erosion caused by the regurgitation of the gastric contents and vomiting. A female patient aged 14 years reported to the Department of Prosthodontics, Lenora Institute of Dental Sciences, with complaints concerning aesthetics and pain in relation to several teeth. Patient gave history of loss of tooth structure over the past few years with associated sensitivity and pain in

Absence of a mandibular posterior tooth, particularly the first molar, is the basic common denominator in a wide range of dental disorders. Despite their awareness of this fact, many dentists are deterred from the routine construction of mandibular posterior fixed partial dentures because of several technical difficulties. An attempt has been made to show how these difficulties may be overcome to give a predictable and satisfactory result.

This clinical case report describes the multi-disciplinary approach in the management of an unusual presentation of idiopathic multiple unerupted impacted permanent teeth in a 20-year-old female patient. The case was unique in that, not only were there multiple missing permanent teeth, but also over retained deciduous teeth and attrited existing permanent teeth with loss of vertical dimension of occlusion. Since the patient was young, it was decided to retain all the erupted permanent teeth and extract the infected deciduous teeth with the objective of fabricating overlay complete dentures. Th

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: A maxillary implant-retained overdenture (Max IOD) represents a controversial prosthesis. Biomechanically, the prosthesis induces strain on the implants, associated with complications from maintenance difficulties to implant loss. Whether the choice of attachment system affects retention of the prosthesis and marginal bone loss (MBL) around the implants remains unclear.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this clinical trial was to assess the amount of retention and MBL provided by 2 attachment types: telescopic (TA) and LOCATOR (LA).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Forty participants (24 wo

In addition to its other symptoms, ectodermal dysplasia causes anodontia and hypodontia intraorally. Partial or total anodontia results in some loss of function, such as chewing, and affects aesthetics. Prosthodontic rehabilitation can be accomplished with fixed, overdenture, complete, or implant-retained prostheses. For rehabilitation, it is crucial to know the age, number and condition of present teeth, and the state of growth of the patient. A 10-year-old male patient who visited our clinic was treated by a multi-disciplinary team of surgeons, orthodontists, and prosthodontists. An overdent

72 patients who had received overdentures at the Cantonal Public Dental Clinic of Zurich during a period of ten years (1970-1980) were called for re-examination. Results obtained were evaluated according to an analogous survey which had been conducted 12 years previously at the same public dental clinic (Wiesmann 1975): The test subjects of both studies belonged exclusively to the lower-income population and treatment was performed by post-graduate dentists employed at the clinic. A comparison with Wiesmann's findings demonstrated a definite improvement in the general oral health conditions of
