The development of Anaplasma ovis was studied in Dermacentor andersoni males transferred from infected to susceptible sheep. Laboratory-reared male D. andersoni were allowed to feed for 6 d on a sheep with ascending A. ovis parasitemia. The ticks were removed and held at room temperature in a humidity chamber for 6 d, after which they were allowed to feed on five susceptible sheep for 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9 d. Gut and salivary glands were collected from ticks during the 21-d experiment and examined with light and electron microscopy. Anaplasmosis developed in all susceptible sheep. Colonies of A. ov

Hispid cotton rats (Sigmodon hispidus Say and Ord) were susceptible to infection with Rickettsia rickettsii Wolbach under laboratory conditions and were capable of serving as sources for infecting ticks with rickettsiae. Cotton rats developed rickettsemias that could be detected for as long as 6 h following intraperitoneal inoculation of 10(5) plaque-forming units (PFUs) of R. rickettsii (Morgan strain). An estimate of the median infectious dose (ID50) was made by inoculating six groups (eight animals per group) with serial dilutions of 10(1) to 10(6) PFUs. In this experiment, cotton rats beca

In the United States, Dermacentor variabilis and Dermacentor andersoni are considered key vectors for Rickettsia rickettsii, the causative agent of Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Through regional surveillance, a wide diversity of Rickettsia spp. have been documented in D. variabilis, and Dermacentor spp. has been suggested as potential vectors for various other pathogens, including Babesia spp. and Ehrlichia canis. To better define the prevalence and diversity of pathogens in Dermacentor spp. across the United States, 848 ticks collected from dogs and cats in 44/50 states in 2018-2019 were test

The technique of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is potentially superior to existing methods for detecting rickettsial infections in ticks. For this reason, we developed assays for identifying rickettsial infections in ticks by PCR. Our assays amplified a 500 bp fragment from the gene encoding the rOmp B protein of Rickettsia rickettsii. The selected primers amplified fragments of the predicted size from all spotted fever group rickettsiae (R. rickettsii, R. parkeri, R. conorii, R. sibirica) tested. No amplified products were detected when typhus group rickettsiae (R. canada, R. prowazekii, R.

Dermacentor nitens (tropical horse tick) is a tick species commonly found parasitizing horses and other equids in the Amazon region, causing economic losses. Currently, tick control is based on chemical acaricides, usually in a power formulation for topical use. However, its indiscriminate use results in the emergence of resistant tick lineages. Several plant compounds have been tested for their acaricide activity. In the Amazon, several plants are used for oil extraction, resulting in the production of solid residue (waste) that may contain chemical molecules with biological activities. Thus,

Winter ticks (Dermacentor albipictus) are an aggressive one-host tick that infest a wide-diversity of ungulates. Infestations can result in anemia, alopecia, emaciation, and death. Most notably, the winter tick has caused negative impacts to moose (Alces alces) populations in the northeast United States and Canada. Winter ticks have been identified on other cervid species, including deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and elk (Cervus canadensis), which generally results in low tick burdens and mild or no disease. Recently, however, a wild yearling bull elk in Pennsylvania was found dead as a result

Ixodes ricinus and Dermacentor reticulatus are widely distributed tick species in Europe. The main hosts for immature stadia of these ticks are small rodents, mostly the genera Apodemus and Microtus, whereas for adult specimens – wild ungulates. These species of ticks are also found on companion and breeding animals including dairy cows. Researches were conducted in the eastern Poland from 2013 to 2014. During consecutive days bodies of cows grazing on the pasture were surveyed and all ticks were collected. Simultaneously ticks were collected from plants with flagging method. Significant prepo

BACKGROUND: Anaplasma ovis is a gram-negative, tick-borne obligate intraerythrocytic pathogen, which causes ovine anaplasmosis in small ruminants worldwide. VirB10 of A. ovis is an integral component of the Type IV Secretion System (T4SS). The T4SS is used by bacteria to transfer DNA and/or proteins undeviatingly into the host cell to increase their virulence. To more thoroughly understand the interaction between A. ovis and Dermacentor silvarum, a vector containing the virb10 gene of A. ovis was used as a bait plasmid to screen interacting proteins from the cDNA library of the D. silvarum sal

BACKGROUND: Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus is transmitted to humans and animals through tick bites and is thought to circulate in very strictly defined natural environments called natural foci. The most common tick serving as a vector for the TBE virus in central Europe is Ixodes ricinus; it is rarely found in other tick species and in Dermacentor reticulatus it has, so far, only been reported in Poland.
METHODS: Between autumn 2016 and spring 2018 ticks were collected by the flagging method in a new TBE focus in the district of northern Saxony, Germany, outside the known risk areas as d

Worldwide, ticks are important vectors of human and animal pathogens. Besides Lyme Borreliosis, a variety of other bacterial and protozoal tick-borne infections are of medical interest in Europe. In this study, 553 questing and feeding Ixodes ricinus (n = 327) and Dermacentor reticulatus ticks (n = 226) were analysed by PCR for Borrelia, Rickettsia, Anaplasma, Coxiella, Francisella and Babesia species. Overall, the pathogen prevalence in ticks was 30.6% for I. ricinus and 45.6% for D. reticulatus. The majority of infections were caused by members of the spotted-fever group rickettsiae (24.4%),

Several spotted fever group rickettsiae (SFGR) previously believed to be nonpathogenic are speculated to contribute to infections commonly misdiagnosed as Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) in the United States, but confirmation is difficult in cases with mild or absent systemic symptoms. We report an afebrile rash illness occurring in a patient 4 days after being bitten by a Rickettsia montanensis-positive Dermacentor variabilis tick. The patient's serological profile was consistent with confirmed SFGR infection.

BACKGROUND: Canine babesiosis is a clinically significant tick-borne disease, caused by different Babesia species. Babesia canis, one of the most important and widespread species in Europe, is transmitted by Dermacentor reticulatus ticks and can cause potentially fatal canine disease. Prevention of pathogen transmission can be achieved by regular tick control and prophylaxis. The present study evaluated the efficacy of a single oral application of lotilaner (Credelio™, Elanco) in dogs for blocking pathogen transmission compared to a negative control group.
METHODS: Twenty-four B. canis-negati

For the first time in the world literature, the presented study describes oral-anal contact between two sympatric Ixodes ricinus and Dermacentor reticulatus ticks, which are the vectors of many pathogens in Europe. Among the specimens collected in nature, an I. ricinus male was found with the hypostome and chelicerae inserted in the anal aperture of a D. reticulatus female. Given the biological and physiological traits of both species and microorganisms colonising these arthropods, it seems that the interspecific oral-anal contacts between ticks may be an unknown alternative route of transmiss

UNLABELLED: A wide range of bacterial pathogens have been identified in ticks, yet the diversity of viruses in ticks is largely unexplored. In the United States, Amblyomma americanum, Dermacentor variabilis, and Ixodes scapularis are among the principal tick species associated with pathogen transmission. We used high-throughput sequencing to characterize the viromes of these tick species and identified the presence of Powassan virus and eight novel viruses. These included the most divergent nairovirus described to date, two new clades of tick-borne phleboviruses, a mononegavirus, and viruses w

Ticks are hematophagous vectors of arthropod-borne disease agents globally. In Malaysia, despite seroprevalence studies indicating the presence of tick-borne diseases among the indigenous people, the etiological agents of these diseases are still unclear. These indigenous people, also known as the Orang Asli, still live in forested areas with frequent contact with wildlife. Wild boar are ubiquitously found in the forested areas where the Orang Asli communities are located and are commonly hunted as a food supplement. In this study, we aim to determine the tick species parasitizing wild boar fr

The taiga tick, Ixodes persulcatus, has previously been limited to eastern Europe and northern Asia, but recently its range has expanded to Finland and northern Sweden. The species is of medical importance, as it, along with a string of other pathogens, may carry the Siberian and Far Eastern subtypes of tick-borne encephalitis virus. These subtypes appear to cause more severe disease, with higher fatality rates than the central European subtype. Until recently, the meadow tick, Dermacentor reticulatus, has been absent from Scandinavia, but has now been detected in Denmark, Norway and Sweden. D

Dermacentor reticulatus is a tick species of high medical and veterinary importance, emerging in several parts of Europe. Up to now most studies focusing on zoonotic rickettsiae in D. reticulatus were based on ticks collected in a limited part of the questing period, and did not take into account the potential seasonal variations in the rate of infection with tick-borne rickettsiae. The aim of the present study was to investigate the latter phenomenon, i.e. to screen D. reticulatus adults, collected monthly in two urban habitats of Budapest, for the presence of three zoonotic Rickettsia spp. A

BACKGROUND: The preventive effect of fluralaner spot-on solution against transmission of Babesia canis by Dermacentor reticulatus ticks was evaluated.
FINDINGS: Sixteen dogs, tested negative for B. canis by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and immunofluorescence assay test (IFAT), were allocated to two study groups. On day 0, dogs in one group (n = 8) were treated once topically with fluralaner spot-on solution (Bravecto™ Spot-on Solution) according to label recommendations and dogs in the control group (n = 8) remained untreated. On days 2, 28, 56, 70 and 84, all dogs were infested with 50 (±
