Marking nut or Bhilawa is the fruit of plant Semecarpus anacardium Linn (Family; Anacardiaceae). It belongs to Semecarpus genera which also includes cashew nuts. It is closely related to Rhus and Toxicodendron genera, which includes poison ivy and poison sumac and causes similar skin reaction due to the presence of compound urushiol. Marking nut dermatitis is an uncommon problem but has special importance in military dermatology. Propolis is a beehive product known for its anti-inflammatory properties. With its growing use, propolis-induced contact dermatitis is increasing. While the dermatitis mostly occurs on areas directly exposed to propolis, our case presented an additional eczema at a site distant from the primary propolis-induced contact dermatitis twice in the same individual. We diagnosed it as an autosensitization dermatitis associated with propolis-induced allergic contact dermatitis.

In a series of 545 consecutive contact dermatitis clinic patients, 274 (50.3%) were men, 56 (20.4%) of whom had hand dermatitis alone, 40 (71.4%) being allergic. The common sensitizers were dichromate in cement, nickel on metal gates, colophony, epoxy resins and rubber chemicals. 48 (85.7%) of the hand cases came from occupational sources. Half of the patch-test-negative men worked in wet jobs. The hands of Nigerian men appear to be less tolerant to irritant wet jobs than those of women who had the opportunity of becoming hardened from childhood.

A black spot in the epidermis over a blister of poison ivy dermatitis is an uncommon finding. Four patients with the phenomenon are described. Histologic and histochemical studies were made on biopsy material and the blackish deposit on the skin surface was compared with black deposits in and on leaves of the species of poison ivy.
