A study was carried out on 50 workers in a floriculture centre to evaluate the incidence of contact dermatitis to Alstroemeria. 3 subjects gave positive reactions to aqueous and ethanolic extracts of cut flowers, stems and leaves. By column chromatography, the allergen was isolated and its chemical structure identified as 6-tuliposide A by proton magnetic resonance and carbon-13 magnetic resonance. The role of cytology in the diagnosis and differentiation of contact dermatitis of two mojor types-allergic and irritant is evaluated. Study in 10 cases of allergic contact dermatitis and 5 cases of irritant dermatitis revealed that lymphocytes were the predominant cells in cytologic smears in the allergic contact dermatitis. But the polymorphs predominated in primary irritant dermatitis. It is concluded that cytology. Will be of help in differentiating the two types of contact dermatitis.

In a 3-year period, 551 patients were patch tested with chlorhexidine gluconate 1% in water. 14 patients showed a strong and obviously relevant reaction. A severe dermatitis developed during treatment with a chlorhexidine preparation in 10 patients with venous or traumatic ulcers of the leg, and in 4 patients with skin infection on the face and/or scalp. So far the sensitizing potential of chlorhexidine has probably been underestimated.

168 children, 14 years of age or younger, were patch tested with the Standard Series of the International Contact Dermatitis Research Group (ICDRG) over a 5-year period. 77 of the children had 1 or more positive reactions; relevant test results were found in 80% of them. 8 boys and 24 girls were allergic to nickel, which proved to be the most common allergen; 5 boys and 6 girls reacted to chromate, and 5 boys and 4 girls reacted to one or more of the rubber chemicals.

It is generally admitted that contact dermatitis seldom appears in children. Eighty-seven cases, however, have been diagnosed at the Department of Allergology of the Dermatological Clinic in Strasbourg in the past 10 years (1969-1978). No element of atopic diathesis could be found in any of them. We have reviewed the cases with a positive patch test to try to derive both theoretical and practical conclusions.

In a search for contact sensitivity to antioxidants we patch tested consecutive patients referred with eczematous dermatitis. Six cases of allergic contact sensitivity to nordihydroguairetic acid (NDGA) were observed. Three had been sensitized by one brand of cream containing 0.1% NDGA, in three patients the source of sensitization could not be traced. In four patients we found positive patch tests to butylated hydroxyanisole and/or to butylated hydroxytoluene. In two cases the positive patch tests were relevant, since both patients remained asymptomatic when antioxidants were avoided in food.

Two patients with contact dermatitis due to the natural product propolis (bee glue) are reported. They presented perioral eczema and stomatitis which were recalcitrant until propolis was considered as the cause.
