Seborrheic dermatitis (SD) is a common dermatological disorder with symptoms that include skin flaking, erythema and pruritus. This review discusses the topical products available for treating SD, which target several aspects of disease pathobiology, including cutaneous microbial dysbiosis (driven by Malassezia yeast), inflammation, sebum production and skin barrier disruption. Among the various treatments available, zinc pyrithione (ZnPT) based products that exhibit anti-fungal action are the market leaders. A skin compartment approach is presented here for combining ZnPT exposure information

Darier's disease is a rare autosomal disorder resulting in characteristic findings of the skin, nails, and mucous membranes. Darier's disease is commonly misdiagnosed as seborrheic dermatitis or eczema. We present the case of a young adult active duty Air Force member with 5 years of skin complaints. The 23-year-old patient had been treated for seborrheic dermatitis and eczema with a variety of oral and topical treatments, which did not result in improvement of his symptoms. Upon referral to dermatology, the dermatologist noted skin, nail, and mucous membrane findings consistent with Darier's

The pathomechanisms of infantile seborrheic dermatitis (ISD) are unknown. An allergic reaction to candidal antigens is one of the hypotheses. The skin of 6 patients suffering from ISD was studied by immunostaining techniques. The lymphocytic infiltrate was composed of Leu4-reactive T cells in which Leu3a-reactive (helper/inducer) cells predominated. Direct immunofluorescence studies revealed no significant deposits of immunoglobulins or complement factors. No candidal antigens could be demonstrated, either in epidermis or in dermis, although candida species were cultured from different sites i

Atopic dermatitis and seborrheic dermatitis are multifactorial dermatitides that are known collectively as endogenous dermatitis. Both conditions can affect the face, but they have clinical, epidemiological, and physiopathological peculiarities that distinguish them from each other. These two diseases are very common all around the world. Atopic dermatitis is associated with xerosis and increased susceptibility to irritants and proteins; patients with this condition have a tendency to develop asthma, allergic rhinitis, and systemic manifestations that are mediated by immunoglobulin E. Seborrhe

On the basis of two children with coexistence of atopic and seborrhoeic dermatitis, authors emphasize similarity of clinical symptoms and chronic, recurrent course of these diseases. Atopic dermatitis and seborrheic dermatitis are most common reasons of skin disorders in infants. Location and character of atopic lesions are atypical during infancy. Most often they occur on face and have erythematous-exfoliative and papulovesicular character. Pruritus and anxiety, especially in younger children are often seen. On the contrary seborrhoeic lesions are mostly seen in typical spots, including hairy

Seborrheic dermatitis (SD) is a common skin condition affecting the scalp and other sebaceous-rich areas. Most recent studies have focused on the microbiota of individuals with SD and healthy controls, suggesting an association of microbial dysbiosis. The variations in the microbiota at lesional and non-lesional sites of SD patients and healthy controls remain unexplored. The present study aimed to characterize the microbiota in SD patients. We conducted a cross-sectional study to analyse microbial composition and diversity of fungi and bacteria on the lesional and non-lesional sites of SD pat

OBJECTIVE: This article reviews clinical trial data that assess the safety, efficacy, and clinical application of roflumilast, a phosphodiesterase-4 inhibitor, for the treatment of seborrheic dermatitis.
DATA SOURCES: A review of the literature was conducted in MEDLINE (Pubmed) and Clinicaltrials.gov from January 1, 1950 to April 13, 2025 using the search terms: "Roflumilast" and "seborrheic dermatitis."
STUDY SELECTION AND DATA EXTRACTION: Relevant articles in English relating to the safety, efficacy, pharmacodynamics, and pharmacokinetics were included.
DATA SYNTHESIS: In one phase IIa cl

Seborrheic dermatitis (SD) and osteoarthritis involve similar factors in their pathogenesis. Both of these diseases are associated with an increased frequency of metabolic syndrome and underlying systemic inflammation. This study evaluated the thickness of the distal femoral cartilage using ultrasonography in patients with SD. The study enrolled 60 patients with SD (19 females and 41 males, mean age: 34.07 ± 12.56 years) and 60 controls matched for age and sex (20 females and 40 males, mean age: 35.08 ± 12.78 years). Ultrasonography was used to measure the distal femoral cartilage thickness (F

Seborrheic dermatitis (SD) is a common, burdensome inflammatory skin disorder. Little is known about the identity and quality of videos patients consume on social media to better understand and manage SD. We evaluated three social media platforms-YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram-for content, quality, and popularity. Search terms "seborrheic dermatitis," "dandruff," "cradle cap," and "flaky scalp" identified videos on each platform. The first 50 videos for each keyword were analyzed. After screening, 147 YouTube, 132 Instagram, and 164 TikTok videos were included. Videos were characterized by upl

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of seborrheic dermatitis (SD) by months and seasons in Istanbul, Turkey, and to examine the relationships between SD frequency and meteorological data, such as average temperature (°C), average humidity (%), average sunshine duration, and solar radiation per months.
METHODS: The study was conducted at Dermatology Department of Haseki Training and Research Hospital. The data of all adult patients who applied to the dermatology outpatient clinic between June 2018 and May 2020 were obtained. Monthly average climate data values of I

The underlying mechanism of seborrheic dermatitis (SD) is poorly understood but major scientific progress has been made in recent years related to microbiology, immunology and genetics. In light of this, the major goal of this article was to summarize the most recent articles on SD, specifically related to underlying pathophysiology. SD results from Malassezia hydrolysation of free fatty acids with activation of the immune system by the way of pattern recognition receptors, inflammasome, IL-1β and NF-kB. M. restricta and M. globosa are likely the most virulent subspecies, producing large quant
