Maternal diet and fatty acids in human milk: results of the MELK study.

PURPOSE: Human milk is the preferred nutrition for infants. Maternal diet influences its fatty acid composition particularly fish-derived fatty acids and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). Evidence for other fatty acids and associations with micronutrient intake remains inconsistent. This study examines associations between maternal macro- and micronutrient intake and human milk fatty acid composition. METHODS: Data of 109 breastfeeding mothers was collected. Dietary intake was assessed using repeated 24-h food records and a short food frequency questionnaire. Nutrient intakes were calculat

Development and Validation of a Self-Administered Simplified Food Frequency Questionnaire for FODMAP Intake Evaluation (FFQ-FODMAP-BE).

PURPOSE: A practical tool to estimate the frequency of high-Fermentable Oligo-Di-Mono-saccharides and Polyols (FODMAP) food intake in Europe is lacking. The aim of this study is to develop and validate a self-administered questionnaire evaluating high-FODMAP food consumption frequency (FFQ-FODMAP-BE) in a Belgian adult population of healthy volunteers (HV) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) patients. METHODS: The developed FFQ was submitted prospectively twice during two weeks to Belgian HV and IBS patients. In parallel, a food history performed by a dietician and 5-day food diaries were coll

Suboptimal Caloric and Micronutrient Intakes in Female Student Athletes Across Several Division 1 Collegiate Sports.

Optimal nutrition in athletes can contribute to training adaptations, recovery, performance, and injury prevention in addition to supporting their overall health and well-being. Macronutrient intake and the link to role in athletic performance has been investigated by several studies, while micronutrient intake in athletes appears to be understudied. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to assess caloric and selected micronutrient intakes in female collegiate student-athletes across several sports. The participants from seven sports were instructed to complete 3-day food records; dietary i

Reliability and validity of a healthy diet determinants questionnaire for adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the development of a short questionnaire including a wide range of personal, social and environmental constructs in relation to a healthy diet in an adolescent population. DESIGN: The questionnaire was developed based on the literature, past experiences and feedback from a small pilot study (n 10). Test and retest (2 weeks later) of the questionnaire was done to investigate test-retest reliability. Data of four non-consecutive 24 h recalls were collected to investigate the predictive validity with food (fruit, vegetables, milk, snacks, soft drinks), nutrient (fibre, asc

Milk feeding and dietary patterns predict weight and fat gains in infancy.

Current guidelines recommend that infants are exclusively breast fed for the first 6 months of life, with particular solid foods being gradually introduced from 6 months. Our objective was to compare the growth of infants whose feeding most closely followed current guidelines with the growth of infants with other feeding practices. Participants were 1740 infants in a prospective cohort study in Southampton, UK. At 6 and 12 months, infants' milk feeding was recorded, diets assessed using food frequency questionnaires (FFQ), and anthropometry performed. Principal components analysis was used to

Vitamin A inadequacy observed in a group of 2- to 6-year-old children living in Kwangju, Republic of Korea.

Dietary intakes and plasma concentrations of retinol and carotenoids were estimated in assessing the vitamin A status of young children in Kwangju, Republic of Korea. Three consecutive 24-hour food recalls and fasting blood samples were obtained from 123 healthy children (58 boys, 65 girls), aged 2-6 years. The daily vitamin A intake (mean +/- SD) was 355.9 +/- 178.1 microg retinol equivalents or 239.0 +/- 111.2 microg retinol activity equivalents. Provitamin A carotenoid intakes were 1211.2 +/- 840.0 microg/day beta-carotene, 234.6 +/- 231.7 microg/day alpha-carotene, and 149.1 +/- 160.7 micr

Genetic and environmental contributions to serum ascorbic acid concentrations: the Stanislas Family Study.

Although numerous environmental factors are documented to influence serum ascorbic concentrations, little is known about the genetic versus environmental contributions to variation of this trait. The aim of this study was to estimate family correlation and, additive genetic heritability and household effects in a variance component analysis for serum ascorbic acid concentrations. In a sample of ninety French families, information was obtained regarding serum ascorbic acid concentrations, usual dietary intake, lifestyle, and other related covariates. Cardiovascular disease risk under low-fat, Mediterranean, and American Heart Association diets: a target trial emulation in United States adults.

BACKGROUND: The Mediterranean diet reduces cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk in European populations, but its long-term effectiveness in United States adults, particularly relative to the American Heart Association (AHA)-2020 dietary goals, remains uncertain. OBJECTIVES: We compared 20-y CVD risk in United States adults under sustained adherence to a low-fat diet, a Mediterranean diet, and the food-based AHA-2020 dietary goals. METHODS: We emulated a target trial using data from the Nurses' Health Study and Health Professionals Follow-up Study among 12,197 United States adults aged 55 to 80

Characteristics of older adults with diabetes: What does the current aged care resident look like?

AIM: The prevalence of diabetes in older adults in residential aged care (RAC) is twice that of community dwelling older adults. Older adults with diabetes have been highlighted as being at high risk of frailty and malnutrition, particularly when managed on a therapeutic diet. However, assumptions may be based on clinical presentation of our oldest old which may be at conflict with the clinical presentation of younger older adults. The aim of this retrospective audit was to identify the characteristics of aged care residents with diabetes, their comorbidities and malnutrition risk. METHODS: R

The impact of body composition on the degree of misreporting of food diaries.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Accurate assessments of energy intake (EI) are needed in lifestyle interventions to guarantee a negative energy balance (EB), thereby losing weight. This study aimed (1) to compare objectively measured and self-reported EI and (2) to determine the predictors of underreporting divided by sex, adiposity and BMI category. METHODS: Seventy-three participants [mean (SD): 43.7 (9.2) years, BMI = 31.5 (4.5) kg/m2, 37% females] of the Champ4Life intervention were included in this study. EI was measured using the "intake-balance method" and self-reported through 3-day food recor

A Fish-Focused Menu: An Interdisciplinary Reconstruction of Ancestral Tsleil-Waututh Diets.

The study of past subsistence offers archeologists a lens through which we can understand relationships between people and their homelands. səl̓ilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) is a Coast Salish Nation whose traditional and unceded territory centers on səl̓ilwət (Tsleil-Wat, Burrard Inlet, British Columbia, Canada). səl̓ilwətaɬ people were fish specialists whose traditional diet focused primarily on marine and tidal protein sources. In this research, we draw on the archeological record, ecology, historical and archival records, and səl̓ilwətaɬ oral histories and community knowledge to build an estimat
