Hand disinfection: how irritant are alcohols?

Irritant contact dermatitis is commonly found on hands of healthcare employees and is often explained by contact to water and detergents. Studies on the dermal tolerance clearly show that the degree of skin irritation is significantly lower after application of alcohol in comparison to detergents. It has also been shown in standardised wash tests using a foam roller that the application of alcohol or water immediately after a detergent-based wash can significantly decrease the degree of skin irritation, probably due to a wash-off of residual detergent. If evidence-based hand hygiene is taught

Disinfection of Legionella pneumophila by photocatalytic oxidation.

Photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) was proven to be efficacious in the inactivation of Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 Strains 977, 1009, 1014 and ATCC 33153. The local (Strains 997, 1009 and 1014) and ATCC (Strain 33153) strains showed sensitivity differences towards PCO. The inactivation mechanisms of PCO were investigated by transmission and scanning electron microscopy by which PCO was found to disintegrate the cells eventually. Before the disintegration, there was lipid peroxidation of outer and cytoplasmic membrane causing holes formation and leading to the entry of OH into the cells to o

Microwave disinfection of soft contact lenses.

We evaluated the effectiveness and convenience of microwave irradiation as a method of disinfecting soft contact lenses. Soft contact lenses from each of the four Food and Drug Administration (FDA) categories were placed in sterile vials and immersed in 2 ml of saline which had been contaminated with one of three common species of bacteria. The contaminated lens vials were placed in a standard 600 W microwave oven and exposed to microwave irradiation times ranging from 30 to 180 s. Significant reductions in bacteria colony counts were found after 30 s of microwave irradiation. Few of the bacte

Potential environmental impact of the chlorine-containing disinfectants usage during the COVID-19.

Chlorine radicals (Cl) play a crucial role in atmospheric chemistry. The COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) pandemic significantly increased the use of chlorine-containing disinfectants in China, leading to enhanced emissions of chlorine gas (Cl2) and hypochlorous acid (HOCl). In this study, we use the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model with updated chlorine chemistry to evaluate the potential air quality impact of chlorine emissions from disinfectant usage during February 2020, a month with a large outbreak of COVID-19 in mainland China. Results indicate that during the pandemic, …

Inactivation of Foot-and-Mouth Disease Virus by Commercially Available Disinfectants and Cleaners.

Foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) is an animal pathogen of great concern. It is contagious to cloven-hoofed animals and affects animals in extensive areas worldwide. In general, the primary eradication strategies for foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) in Japan are stamping out the disease and restriction of movement. It is also important to completely disinfect the infected area to prevent the spread of FMDV, including vehicles and people as well. However, there is no report on the effect of commercially available disinfectants against FMDV in a short contact time. In this study, we evaluated the …

Efficacy of commonly used disinfectants for inactivation of human noroviruses and their surrogates.

Human noroviruses (HuNoVs) are the most common cause of acute viral gastroenteritis worldwide and are a leading cause of foodborne disease. Their environmental persistence and purported resistance to disinfection undoubtedly contribute to their success as foodborne disease agents. The purpose of this study was to compare the efficacy of three commonly used disinfectant active ingredients against representative HuNoV strains and cultivable surrogates. Ethanol (50, 70, and 90%), sodium hypochlorite (5, 75, 250, 500, and 1,000 ppm), and a quaternary ammonium compound blend (at 0.1×, 1.0×, and 10×
