A Systematic Scoping Review of the Prevalence, Etiological, Psychological, and Interpersonal Factors Associated with BDSM.

BDSM (bondage, discipline, dominance, submission, and sadomasochism) encompasses a diverse set of sexual interests. Research interests in BDSM have been historically underpinned by examining potential mental health issues, unhealthy fixations on specific sexual behaviors, and/or the presence of childhood trauma, as is predicted by psychopathological and psychoanalytic models. The objective of this scoping review was to provide an overview of the current landscape of BDSM research, including incidence rates, evidence for psychopathological, psychoanalytical, biological, and social etiological f

An examination of the stability of interpersonal hostile-dominance and its relationship with psychiatric symptomatology and post-discharge aggression.

The relevance of interpersonal hostile-dominance (HD) to post-discharge aggression in mental health patients is unclear. This study assessed whether (1) HD is stable over time; (2) the relationship between HD and positive, negative, disorganized, and excited symptoms is consistent over time; and (3) HD is related to aggression post-discharge. Two hundred psychiatric inpatients were recruited on admission to hospital; 41 were available for follow-up at 6 months post-discharge, including 29 men and 12 women, with an age range of 19-63 (M = 39.63 years, SD = 12.69 years). Psychiatric symptomatolo

Women's early relational experiences that lead to domestic violence.

Many perpetrators of domestic violence engage in a perpetual cycle of forming sequential relationships while repeating violent behavior. Their methods of manipulation successfully dominate a partner, the outcome of the relationship being control and violence. This research study was influenced by a feminist standpoint epistemology, and was focused on the narratives of 15 women who chose to talk in great detail about the transition in their respective relationship from love to violence. The findings revealed three tactics, termed the princess effect, feeling vulnerable, and commitment, which we

The effect of escapable versus inescapable social defeat on conditioned defeat and social recognition in Syrian hamsters.

Male Syrian hamsters are naturally aggressive animals that reliably defend their home territory against intruding conspecifics. Hamsters that lose agonistic encounters subsequently exhibit a striking change in their agonistic behavior, however, expressing no aggression and instead becoming highly submissive, a behavioral change that we have termed conditioned defeat. We have generally employed an inescapable defeat training protocol when studying conditioned defeat. The purpose of the present study was to determine if conditioned defeat is an epiphenomenon of the inescapable defeat experience

Punking and bullying: strategies in middle school, high school, and beyond.

Punking is a practice of verbal and physical violence, humiliation, and shaming usually done in public by males to other males. This definition is based on interviews and discussion groups with 32 adolescent boys and on media sources within which adolescent males are embedded. Discourse analysis findings reveal that punking terminology and behaviors are usually interchangeable with bullying terminology and behaviors. Both practices are purposeful strategies taken up and used by many boys to affirm masculinity norms of toughness, strength, dominance, and control. Implications from this research

Autocracy bias in informal groups under need for closure.

Two experiments investigated the tendency of groups with members under high (vs. low) need for cognitive closure to develop an autocratic leadership structure in which some members dominate the discussion, constitute the "hubs" of communication, and influence the group more than other members. The first experiment found that high (vs. low) need for closure groups, as assessed via dispositional measure of the need for closure, manifested greater asymmetry of conversational floor control, such that members with autocratic interactional style were more conversationally dominant and influential th

Endocrine changes during group housing of primiparous sows in early pregnancy.

The effect of group housing sows during early pregnancy on maternal endocrine changes and on embryonic survival was studied. Twenty crossbred (Swedish Yorkshire x Swedish Landrace) primiparous sows were used. On day 11 +/- 1 of pregnancy 3 unacquainted sows were randomly assigned to a single pen measuring 3 m x 3 m in area. A fourth sow in each group was housed in an individual pen and used as a control. This procedure was repeated 5 times to collect data from 5 animals in each rank as well as in a control group. Blood samples were collected from the day before grouping to day 5 after grouping

Rank- and threat-dependent social modulation of innate defensive behaviors.

Fear and defense are among the most fundamental survival behaviors and are profoundly influenced by the social environment in group-living animals. However, it remains poorly understood how social context-and particularly dominance hierarchy, a defining feature of many social species-modulates defensive strategies under naturalistic conditions. To address this question, we investigated the social modulation of innate fear in mice exposed to two ethologically relevant threats: a transient visual looming stimulus and a sustained predatory threat posed by a live rat. We found that social presence

The BIAS-Treatment Scale (BIAS-TS): a measure of the subjective experience of active and passive harm and facilitation.

This article describes the Behaviors from Intergroup Affect and Stereotypes-Treatment Scale (BIAS-TS), a self-report measure of experiences of active harm, passive harm, active facilitation, and passive facilitation. The BIAS-TS was derived from the Behaviors from Intergroup Affect and Stereotypes (BIAS) Map, and provided reliable, replicable, and stable indexes of different harmful and facilitatory behaviors that people encounter in their day-to-day lives from multiple sources (Studies 1 and 2). The BIAS-TS subscales were uniquely associated with concurrent subjective well-being, and were dis

Social stress shortens lifespan in mice.

Stress and low socioeconomic status in humans confer increased vulnerability to morbidity and mortality. However, this association is not mechanistically understood nor has its causation been explored in animal models thus far. Recently, cellular senescence has been suggested as a potential mechanism linking lifelong stress to age-related diseases and shorter life expectancy in humans. Here, we established a causal role for lifelong social stress on shortening lifespan and increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease in mice. Specifically, we developed a lifelong chronic psychosocial stress m

Androgen receptors in a neural circuit from the medial amygdala to the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis regulate responses to social challenges.

Androgen receptor (AR) signaling in the posterior medial amygdala (MeP) plays a critical role in promoting resistance to social defeat stress in dominant male Syrian hamsters. The MeP is densely interconnected with the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST), and the MeP-BNST pathway is essential for regulating aggression and responses to social threats. Here, we tested the hypothesis that AR signaling within MeP-BNST projection neurons is required for stress resistance in dominant animals. We first used a short hairpin RNA (shRNA) virus to reduce AR expression in MeP neurons. Male and fema

[The reproductive correlates of social hierarchy in laboratory male mice].

In laboratory male mice the effects of social hierarchy on hormonal and spermatogenic testicular function, accessory organs and testicular weights, sexual behaviour have been investigated using an experimental model of social hierarchy, which is characterised by a minimal size (two male mice) and 5 days period of social interactions. The social rank of the partners was detected by asymmetry in aggressive behaviour. Using the experimental condition, when the both partners have no preferences for exclusive use of area we demonstrated that there were no rank differences in the number of mounts an

Different levels of gamma-synuclein mRNA in the cerebral cortex of dominant, neutral and submissive rats selected in the competition test.

Synucleins are small proteins regulating the filamentous network that in turn influences the release of dopamine and glutamate neurotransmitters involved in mood and motivation processes. We have studied the pattern of synuclein expression in animal models for mania and depression. Dominant behavior, as defined in a food competition test with dyads of rats, can serve as a model of mania and submissive behavior as a model of depression. The expression of alpha-, beta- and gamma-synuclein was analyzed in four regions of cortex from dominant, neutral and submissive rats using TaqMan reverse trans

Transactional escalation in rigidity and intensity of interpersonal behaviour under stress.

The present study provides empirical support for a new interpersonal concept of transactional escalation. This proposition hypothesizes that an individual's typical pattern of interpersonal behaviour will become more extreme and rigid under stressful interpersonal conditions. Thirty Caucasian females participated in brief interviews that had two stages: low-stress and high-stress conditions. The half of the subjects who were assigned to a high-stress interview condition were predicted to show an escalation of their typical friendly-submissive patterns during the second half of the interview. Behavioral and neuroendocrine response to psychosocial stress in male rats: the effects of the 5-HT 1A agonist ipsapirone.

The effect of the 5-HT 1A agonist ipsapirone on the behavior, plasma catecholamine, and corticosterone levels was studied in male Wistar rats during the psychosocial stress of confrontation with a confined dominant opponent 24 hr after defeat. The effect of the drug was also studied during a predefeat confrontation with the confined (would-be dominant) rat. Blood samples were withdrawn via a permanent heart catheter. The drug (5 mg/kg, ip) or vehicle was given 30 min before transportation to the experimental room. Ipsapirone had no major effects on the plasma hormone concentrations and had no

Biochemical and hormonal correlates of dominance and social behavior in all-male groups of squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus).

This study examined the relationship between dominance rank and several physiological and behavioral measures in stable, captive, all-male squirrel monkey groups. Four groups, each containing three males, were observed for 12 weeks during the breeding season. Relative dominance ranking among males in each group was based on the direction of agonistic behaviors displayed. For each subject, whole blood serotonin (WBS), plasma testosterone (T), and cortisol (C) were sampled 4 to 6 times over the course of the study. Samples were separated by 1- to 2-week intervals. Each group had a stable linear

Acute alcohol triggers rank-specific social ascent through a prefrontal-accumbens circuit in male mice.

Alcohol is known to alter social behavior, yet how it acts on the brain to produce specific, rank-dependent changes in social competition remains unknown. Here we show in male mice that a low dose of alcohol induces a rapid, transient, and highly selective upward shift in social hierarchy: it promotes dominance behavior exclusively in mid-ranking animals, enabling them to stably outcompete their immediate superior. Critically, this effect was absent in both dominant and the lowest-ranking subordinates, demonstrating a precise social-context gating of alcohol's action. This rank-specific effect

Intrafollicular insulin-like growth factor-binding protein levels in equine ovarian follicles during preovulatory maturation and regression.

The profiles of insulin-like growth factor-binding proteins (IGFBPs) in follicular fluid have been characterized in a number of mammals (rats, pigs, sheep, cattle, humans) and are good indicators of follicular status. We studied the IGFBP profiles of equine serum and ovarian follicular fluid recovered at various stages of the follicular phase. The levels of IGFBPs were related to the morphology and the steroidogenic activity of the follicles. Follicular fluids were recovered by ultrasound-guided follicular aspiration. In the first experiment, the dominant follicles of 10 mares were partly punc

Effects of chronic d-amphetamine on social behavior of the rat: implications for an animal model of paranoid schizophrenia.

Hooded rats in a social colony were given increasing daily doses of d-amphetamine up to 8 mg/kg. Time-lapse 16 mm cinematographically recorded behavior was analyzed for the following: grooming, feeding, sex, sleeping, resting, sterotypy, agonistic behavior, muricidal activity, and the location and movement of each rat. Subordiant rats receiving d-amphetamine actively withdrew from social interactions by retreating to strategically defensible locations in the environment. They remained hypervigilant of other rats and overreacted to their approaches by either fleeing or by defensively rearing an
