Factors Associated with Gabapentin Misuse among People Who Inject Drugs in Appalachian Kentucky.

Gabapentin is misused to potentiate the euphoric effects of opioids, self-treat physical pain, and moderate opioid withdrawal symptoms. Because examinations of gabapentin misuse among people who inject drugs (PWID) are scant, the aim of this study is to identify factors associated with gabapentin misuse among this population. Methods: Data are drawn from a study examining the uptake of syringe service programs (SSPs) in Appalachian Kentucky. The sample includes 324 PWID who were age 18 and over and reported past month drug injection. Logistic regression models were constructed to examine recen

Substance and Alcohol Misuse, Drug Pathways, and Offending Behaviors in Association With ADHD in Prison Inmates.

Objective: The objective of the study is to quantify the extent of specific polysubstance use, drug transitions to current substances, and describe the association with alcohol use disorders among inmates with ADHD. We also examined health risk behaviors and patterns of offending in relation with ADHD. Method: A total of 387 male British prison inmates were screened and interviewed via the Diagnostic Interview for ADHD in Adults 2.0 (DIVA-2). Results: Male prisoners with ADHD endorse more methadone and amphetamine use. There was a significantly higher linear trend among those with ADHD for the

Misuse of corticosteroids in some of the drugs dispensed as preparations from alternative systems of medicine in India.

Screening for corticosteroids carried out on 120 samples of alternative medicines which were dispensed to patients suffering mainly from asthma, arthritis, etc., showed that 38.32% of them were adulterated with steroids. Most of these samples were submitted for screening by either a medical practitioner or the patients themselves, who suspected effects of steroids from these drugs. The percentage of steroid positivity was determined in ayurvedic drugs, homeopathic drugs, and unknown or other category of drugs. The presence of steroids in these drugs given for different ailments such as asthma,

Genetic and environmental risk factors in the aetiology of illicit drug initiation and subsequent misuse in women.

BACKGROUND: Subsequent to initial exposure to the use of a psychoactive substance, psychoactive substance use disorder (PSUD) may or may not develop. AIMS: To investigate the relationship between the risk factors for initiation and the subsequent misuse of psychoactive substances. METHOD: The lifetime history of illicit substance use and misuse was obtained by telephone interview with 1934 members of female-female twin pairs. We apply a novel model, which estimates the role of genetic and environmental risk factors that influence initiation and those specific to misuse, to three classes of i

Deliberate self-harm in alcohol and drug misusers: patient characteristics and patterns of clinical care.

The aims of this study were to describe the characteristics of alcohol and drug misusers presenting to a general hospital following suicide attempts and to investigate the patterns of clinical care they received before and after the attempts. The Oxford Monitoring System for Attempted Suicide and patient case-notes were used to obtain information on alcohol and drug misusers assessed by the general hospital psychiatric services after deliberate self-harm in 1992. Of 724 patients, 200 (28%) were substance misusers (36% of males, 23% of females). Both alcoholics and drug misusers were more likel

[Misuse of OTC drugs as a public health problem - a case report of extreme severe hypokalaemia due to OTC drug therapy].

Over-the-counter (OTC) drugs taken as intended and according to medical advice are a safe form of disease control. In the public consciousness, they are regarded as harmless agents. Thus, there is a danger of insufficient knowledge about possible side effects, interactions with other drugs or the consequences of taking too high doses. The availability of OTC drugs and social acceptance of their use are sometimes the reason for their recreational use. This article describes the case of a female patient who presented to the emergency department with complaints such as significant weakness, deter

Invited commentary: motivating better methods-and better data collection-for measuring the prevalence of drug misuse.

The United States continues to suffer a drug overdose crisis that has resulted in over 100 000 deaths annually since 2021. Despite decades of attention, estimates of the prevalence of drug use at the spatiotemporal resolutions necessary for resource allocation and intervention evaluation are lacking. Current approaches for measuring the prevalence of drug use, such as population surveys, capture-recapture, and multiplier methods, have significant limitations. In a recent article, Santaella-Tenorio et al (Am J Epidemiol. 2024;193(7):959-967) used a novel joint bayesian spatiotemporal modeling a

Military service branch differences in alcohol use, tobacco use, prescription drug misuse, and mental health conditions.

INTRODUCTION: Rates of substance use and mental health conditions vary across military service branches, yet branches also differ notably in terms of demographics and deployment experiences. This study examines whether branch differences in substance use and mental health outcomes persist after adjustment for a comprehensive set of demographic and deployment-related factors. METHODS: Data on 16,699 Armed Forces Active Duty service members were from the 2015 Department of Defense Health Related Behaviors Survey. Service branch-specific prevalences were estimated for self-reports of heavy episo

Personality to Prescription Drug Misuse in Adolescents: Testing Affect Regulation, Psychological Dysregulation, and Deviance Proneness Pathways.

Background: Fifteen to 25-year-olds are the age group most likely to misuse prescription drugs. Few studies have tested theory-driven models of adolescent risk for prescription drug misuse. Moreover, rarely are distinct pathways to different forms of prescription drug misuse considered. Methods: We tested mediational paths from personality to mental health symptoms to prescription drug misuse, informed by etiological models of addiction. We specified pathways from particular personality traits to unique forms of prescription drug misuse via specific mental health symptoms. We used semi-longitu

Defining Prescription Drug Misuse: A Naturalistic Evaluation of National Survey on Drug Use and Health Data From 2012-2014 to 2015-2017.

OBJECTIVES: Prescription drug misuse (PDM) is a significant public health problem. As research has evolved, the definitions of misuse have varied over time, yet the implications of this variability have not been systematically studied. The objective of this study was to leverage a change in the measurement of PDM in a large population survey to identify its impact on the prevalence and correlates of this behavior. METHODS: Data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health were compared before and after a change in the definition of PDM from one that restricted the source and motive for use

Risk factors for alcohol and drug misuse amongst young women in informal settlements in Durban, South Africa.

Alcohol and drug misuse (ADM) pose a significant disease burden globally. Yet, there remains a gap in understanding risk factors associated with women's ADM, particularly those in marginalised settings. We investigated risk factors associated with ADM amongst young women in urban informal settlements in South Africa. Bivariate and multivariable logistic regression analyses were conducted on a sample of 680 young women assessing associations between sociodemographic factors, mental health, relationship factors and past year ADM. Alcohol misuse was assessed using the 10 item Alcohol Use Disorder
