New graduate nurses' transition to practice: A longitudinal quantitative analysis of factors that impact workplace performance.

BACKGROUND: The transition from a student to a professional nurse is challenging; these challenges are well-documented, namely, imposter syndrome, anxiety, and perceived incompetence. Internationally programs have been established to support new graduate nurses during initial employment. However, very little quantitative data is available that differentiates the composite factors that impact graduate progression during their first year of employment. Exploration of factors associated with new graduate nurses' progress is warranted. AIM: This study explored associations of individual demograph

Electronic health record competency in graduate nurses: A grounded theory study.

BACKGROUND: The use of electronic health records is ubiquitous in healthcare settings, yet newly graduated nurses struggle with developing electronic health record competency prior to entry into nursing practice. Insufficient electronic health record knowledge, skills, and attitudes among newly graduated nurses are contributing to patient harm, clinical burn-out, and unsafe practices. In this study, we interviewed electronic health record educators to identify how newly graduated nurses develop electronic health record competency characteristics and to learn about their educational approaches

Job Mismatch, Overeducation and Overqualification in Canada: A Comparative Study of Immigrant and Native-Born Graduates From Canadian Postsecondary Institutions.

This study examines job mismatch among immigrant and Canadian-born graduates of Canadian postsecondary institutions. Job mismatch is an important dimension of labour market integration, but widely used measures, such as overeducation based on the formal educational requirements of a job, may not capture the nuance of graduates' employment outcomes. Overeducation and overqualification capture different aspects of mismatch, reflecting the alignment of formal educational requirements and broader assessments of skills, education, and experience. Examining both measures is therefore important for u

International medical graduates' experiences of clinical competency assessment in postgraduate and licensing examinations: A scoping review protocol.

An international medical graduate (IMG) is a doctor who has received their basic medical qualification from a medical school located in a different country from that in which they practice or intend to practice. IMGs are known to face difficulties in their working lives, including differential attainment in assessment. The objective of this review is to map key concepts and types of evidence in academic and gray literature relating to international medical graduates' experiences of clinical competency assessment and to identify knowledge gaps on this topic by systematically searching, selectin

Emergency preparedness for residency/fellowship programs: lessons learned during Hurricane Katrina and applied during Hurricane Ike.

When it struck the US Gulf Coast in 2005, Hurricane Katrina severely disrupted many graduate medical education residency/fellowship programs in the region and the training of hundreds of residents/fellows. Despite the work of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education in responding to this natural disaster and facilitating communication and transfer of residents/fellows to other unaffected training programs, the storm exposed the gaps in the existing system. Subsequently, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, with the aid of its member organizations, including

How do supervisor-student relationship affect anxiety of graduate students? --The mediating role of research self-efficacy and the moderating role of mindset.

OBJECTIVE: In China, the number of graduate students continues to increase, and graduate education is developing rapidly. However, mental health issues among graduate students are widespread. Self-efficacy and mindset have been found to moderate the effect of negative life events on individuals' anxiety and depression levels. However, few studies have extended this conclusion to postgraduate student samples. METHODS: This study utilized a moderated mediation model to explore the mediating role of research self-efficacy and the moderating role of mindsets. A sample of Chinese graduate students

Integrating ethics into infectious disease graduate training: a multidimensional framework for public health practice.

Through a narrative review and synthesis of the global status of Infectious Disease Ethics (IDE) education, this paper proposes positioning IDE as a core competency in graduate training and constructs a three-dimensional integrated model of "Theory-Practice-Assessment." Drawing on the experience of the OPENING project by the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID), it emphasizes that the ethical framework must adapt to the paradigm shifts brought about by emerging technologies such as genomics. This model not only addresses the gaps in IDE education exposed b

Bias, Fairness, and Validity in Graduate-School Admissions: A Psychometric Perspective.

As many schools and departments are considering the removal of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) from their graduate-school admission processes to enhance equity and diversity in higher education, controversies arise. From a psychometric perspective, we see a critical need for clarifying the meanings of measurement "bias" and "fairness" to create common ground for constructive discussions within the field of psychology, higher education, and beyond. We critically evaluate six major sources of information that are widely used to help inform graduate-school admissions decisions: grade point

[Historical background of pharmacology education in medical school in Japan].

Medicine is the science and practice of the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of a various kind of mental and physical disorders. About 150 year ago, Japan was opened to an influx of foreigners and foreign influence that went far beyond anything the Japanese had imagined. Meiji government decided to adopt German medicine in 1869. Even after that time, Japanese educational system appears to be influenced by western countries, especially United States. This is symbolized by JACME (Japan Accreditation Council for Medical Education), aiming to strengthen and advance medical education in Japan f

Removing a barrier to equity.

Earlier this year, the University of Michigan became the first US university to remove the requirement that applicants to its nonprofessional doctoral programs take a standardized test-the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). This decision will not, on its own, address inequities in admissions practice, nor the broader education barriers that many applicants face. But it is a major step toward an admissions process that considers all dimensions of a candidate's preparation and promise-a holistic view that should be adopted by all universities if equity in education and opportunities is to be ach

Establishing the Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (DTM&H) course in the Sultanate of Oman.

Until 1997, there was no formal teaching in tropical medicine in Arabian Peninsular countries, although many tropical diseases (for example, malaria, schistosomiasis, leishmaniasis, filariasis), are endemic in the region. A six month, part time Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (DTM&H) course was established in the Sultan Qaboos University, Muscat, Sultanate of Oman, in 1997, for small groups of Omani doctors wishing to sit the annual DTM&H examination in London. To date, 21 doctors have been successful, and the Royal College of Physicians of London has accredited the Tropical Medicine
