[Electroencephalography in epileptic disorders and acute convulsions (author's transl)].

the most important examination of epileptic seizures is the EEG because it is able to reveal interictal changes which indicate pathological processes in neuronal tracts. Diffuse slowing can be seen postical or due to intoxication after both has been excluded in diffuse cortical atrophy. Focal slowing in adults is always suspective of a tumour. -General paroxysmal discharges are frequently characteristical of an epileptic convulsive disorder. Focal spikes do correlate well with the type of seizure. Paroxysmal discharges are primarily indicative of an epileptic disorder-they do, however, occur a

[Electroencephalography in hepatic coma: therapy with hemoperfusion (author's transl)].

Six patients (two men and four women) aged between 15 and 60 years in hepatic coma stage IV and with very severe EEG changes were treated with hemoperfusion. The causes leading to coma were acute virus hepatitis A in two cases, hepatitis B in three cases, and Amanita intoxication in one case. Only the patient with Amanita intoxication survived. On admission to the hospital, there were very severe EEG changes of stage IV in all patients. They preceded the clinical manifestation of coma stage IV up to one day in half of the patients who were at most in coma stage II at this time. At the beginnin

Neurophysiological Markers of Cognitive Failures in Drivers: An Electroencephalography Study.

INTRODUCTION: Cognitive failures (CFs) during driving significantly contribute to traffic accidents and fatalities. This study aimed to investigate neurophysiological markers of CF in drivers using electroencephalography (EEG). METHODS: Thirty taxi drivers were classified into high and low CF groups based on CF questionnaire (CFQ) scores. EEG signals were recorded during eyes-closed rest and eyes-open Go/No-Go (GNG) tasks to assess brainwave patterns and lobe-specific activation. Statistical analyses included t-tests, repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA), and Pearson's correlations.…

Are neurasthenia and depression the same disease entity? An electroencephalography study.

BACKGROUND: The neurasthenia-depression controversy has lasted for several decades. It is challenging to solve the argument by symptoms alone for syndrome-based disease classification. Our aim was to identify objective electroencephalography (EEG) measures that can differentiate neurasthenia from major depressive disorder (MDD). METHODS: Both electronic medical information records and EEG records from patients with neurasthenia and MDD were gathered. The demographic and clinical characteristics, EEG power spectral density, and functional connectivity were compared between the neurasthenia and…

Prevalence of clinical electroencephalography findings in stroke patients with delirium.

OBJECTIVE: Delirium is an acute cognitive disorder associated with multiple electroencephalographic (EEG) abnormalities in non-neurological patients, though specific EEG characteristics in patients with stroke remain unclear. We aimed to compare the prevalence of EEG abnormalities in stroke patients during delirium episodes with periods that did not correspond to delirium. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed clinical EEG reports for stroke patients who received daily delirium assessments as part of a prospective study. We compared the prevalence of EEG features corresponding to patient-days

Subhairline Electroencephalography for the Detection of Large Vessel Occlusion Stroke.

BACKGROUND: Endovascular thrombectomy is standard treatment for patients with anterior circulation large vessel occlusion stroke (LVO-a). Prehospital identification of these patients would enable direct routing to an endovascular thrombectomy-capable hospital and consequently reduce time-to-endovascular thrombectomy. Electroencephalography (EEG) has previously proven to be promising for LVO-a stroke detection. Fast and reliable electrode application, however, can remain a challenge. A potential alternative is subhairline EEG. We evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of subhairline EEG for LVO-a st…

Electroencephalography in the diagnosis of hydrocephalus in golden hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus).

The golden hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) is a popular laboratory animal and is used in a multitude of behavioural studies. However, it has been shown that it suffers from different forms of hereditary hydrocephalus, which may result in behavioural changes. This prospective study was designed to look into the usefulness of electroencephalography (EEG) measurements in the diagnosis of hydrocephalus in hamsters. The EEGs of the hydrocephalic hamsters were evaluated double-blind and showed a high-voltage slow wave activity, with a fast activity superimposed onto it. This pattern has already been …

[Sleep electroencephalography in depression and mental disorders with depressive comorbidity].

Traditional scoring of sleep EEG in depressed patients shows abnormalities in sleep maintenance, sleep architecture, REM sleep, the distribution of slow wave and REM sleep during the night. Computerized analysis that comprises the period-amplitude analysis procedure and spectral analysis discloses changes in delta activity and distribution of delta activity. However, these methods of analysing EEG sleep are not able to distinguish the various concepts of depression: endogenous and non-endogenous depression, unipolar and bipolar depression, psychotic and non-psychotic depression. Diagnostic and prognostic significance of electroencephalography with intravenous diazepam in epilepsy.

Thirty cases of intractable epilepsy in children were investigated to observe the correlation between the suppression of seizure discharges to intravenous diazepam and the type of seizure or effects of subsequent therapy. Suppression of seizure discharges were bilaterally poor in 75% of the cases with infantile spasms and 89% of cases with Lennox syndrome and other generalized seizures while it was unilaterally poor in 80% of the cases with focal or unilateral seizures. ACTH or steroid therapy was clinically and electroencephalographically effective in 80% of the cases with good suppression re

[Heat pulsation as a method of functional loading during electroencephalography].

In most of the normals who were studied with the aid of thermal pulsation there was an expressed shift of bioelectrical brain activity towards a synchronization. In patients with generalized epileptical fits and with mesodiencephalic lesions under the influence of thermal pulsation there was a distinct expression an increase of pathological activity. This effect obviously exceeded the results of a use of photostimulation and hyperventilation. In patients with focal lesions of the hemospheres the effectivity of of the method appeared to less.

Current knowledge of intermittent photic stimulation for electroencephalography in dogs.

Intermittent photic stimulation is a standardized activation procedure for electroencephalography in humans that increases the detection of epileptic activity and improves diagnostic yield. However, its application in veterinary medicine remains inconsistent and methodologically heterogeneous. This narrative review synthesizes current knowledge regarding intermittent photic stimulation in dogs, critically evaluates variability in stimulus design, vigilance state, and electrode montage, and proposes a framework to support standardization in veterinary practice. Published veterinary studies demo…

Electroencephalography Monitoring for Seizure Risk Stratification in the Critically III.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Seizures and epileptiform abnormalities (EAs) are common in critically ill patients, are frequently clinically silent, and are associated with worse outcomes. Continuous electroencephalography (cEEG) remains an essential tool in the diagnosis and management of electrographic seizures (ESz) and EAs in this population, leading to its increased use in critical settings. However, cEEG is resource-intensive, and prolonged monitoring for all patients may not be feasible or necessary in many practice environments. RECENT FINDINGS: The growing demand for cEEG in critically ill pati…

Inhibitory control of gait initiation in humans: An electroencephalography study.

Response inhibition is a crucial component of executive control. Although mainly studied in upper limb tasks, it is fully implicated in gait initiation. Here, we assessed the influence of proactive and reactive inhibitory control during gait initiation in healthy adult participants. For this purpose, we measured kinematics and electroencephalography (EEG) activity (event-related potential [ERP] and time-frequency data) during a modified Go/NoGo gait initiation task in 23 healthy adults. The task comprised Go-certain, Go-uncertain, and NoGo conditions. Each trial included preparatory and impera…

[Applications and prospects of electroencephalography technology in neurorehabilitation assessment and treatment].

With the high incidence of neurological diseases such as stroke and mental illness, rehabilitation treatments for neurological disorders have received widespread attention. Electroencephalography (EEG) technology, despite its excellent temporal resolution, has historically been limited in application due to its insufficient spatial resolution, and is mainly confined to preoperative assessment, intraoperative monitoring, and epilepsy detection. However, traditional constraints of EEG technology are being overcome with the popularization of EEG technology with high-density over 64-lead, the appl…
