Elephant shrews as hosts of immature ixodid ticks.

Two hundred and seventy-three elephant shrews, consisting of 193 Elephantulus myurus, 67 Elephantulus edwardii and 13 animals belonging to other species, were examined for ixodid ticks at 18 localities in South Africa and Namibia. The immature stages of Ixodes rubicundus, Rhipicentor nuttalli, Rhipicephalus warburtoni and a Rhipicephalus pravus-like tick were the most numerous of the 18 tick species recovered. Substantial numbers of immature Rhipicephalus arnoldi, Rhipicephalus distinctus and Rhipicephalus exophthalmos were also collected from elephant shrews at particular localities. Larvae o

Induced elephant (Loxodonta africana) tusk removal.

Elephant tusk removal usually requires costly surgical procedures that are time-consuming and present a significant risk to the animal when performed using general anesthesia. Such techniques require gauges, chisels, and forceps to remove the tusk. This article reports the simple removal of the tusk of an 18-yr-old African elephant (Loxodonta africana) without the use of surgical instruments and anesthesia. Rubber elastics were placed around a tusk, causing loss of alveolar bone with subsequent exfoliation of the tusk within 3 wk. The healing process was uneventful.

A new devised skirted elephant trunk technique.

A simple and effective new elephant trunk technique was devised and applied to two patients with a successful result. In advance before the operation, an arch graft with a skirted elephant trunk was made. This was done by inserting a smaller, 22 mm diameter sized graft into the arch graft at the distal end and suturing it so as to leave a skirt extending over the smaller graft. This configuration facilitates the distal anastomosis and effectively shortens anastomotic time.

Use of the "elephant trunk technique" in aortic surgery.

BACKGROUND: In aortic replacement, the "elephant trunk technique" uses surplus intravascular graft length to facilitate subsequent operations on the downstream aorta. This study investigates the experience with the technique since its conception by our group. METHODS: Between 1982 and 1994, 80 elephant trunks were implanted in 72 patients. In 40 cases the primary position was in the proximal descending thoracic aorta, extending an aortic arch graft. In 32 instances the elephant trunk was placed in the distal descending thoracic aorta, extending descending aortic replacement. Aortic pathology

Further diagnostic thoughts about the Elephant Man.

Further evidence for a diagnosis of the Elephant Man's condition is reviewed. It is known that the Elephant Man had "mocassin" lesions, hyperostoses of the skull, and absence of café-au-lait spots, all of which are characteristic of Proteus syndrome. Recently, questions have been raised about his skeletal findings and their relevance to neurofibromatosis. However, other skeletal diagnoses have been entertained, including Maffucci syndrome, Paget's disease of bone, pyarthrosis, and fibrous dysplasia. These diagnostic possibilities are discussed and evaluated critically. It is concluded that the

The "elephant man" of Cambridge. a case report of neurofibromatosis.

The case is presented of a 65-year-old man with neurofibromatosis manifesting facial and skeletal features resembling those of the "elephant man" described by Sir Frederick Treves. Autopsy revealed not only a pheochromocytoma (a common accompaniment of neurofibromatosis), but an enlarged infarcted spleen and a subphrenic abscess. These findings have not been described previously in a patient with neurofibromatosis.

Elephant teeth from the atlantic continental shelf.

Teeth of mastodons and mammoths have been recovered by fishermen from at least 40 sites on the continental shelf as deep as 120 meters. Also present are submerged shorelines, peat deposits, lagoonal shells, anz relict sands. Evidently elephants and other large mammals ranged this region during the glacial stage of low sea level of the last 25,000 years.

Fibrolytic capacity of the gut microbiome in captive African elephants (Loxodonta africana): a pilot study.

African elephants (Loxodonta africana) depend on the fibrolytic capacity of their gut microbiome (GMB) to efficiently utilize fibrous plant material. However, knowledge is missing on the temporal stability and functional dynamics (especially fibrolytic capacity) of their GMB. Likewise, information on the associated volatile fatty acids (VFA) production in the elephant's hindgut is scarce. In this pilot study, we collected feces from five captive African elephants on two occasions separated by 12 months to explore the GMB composition and its changes over time. We characterized the GMB's fibroly…

First evidence of clinical protection from an EEHV1A mRNA vaccine in naturally infected juvenile elephants.

UNLABELLED: Juvenile Asian elephants who have lost maternal antibodies are particularly susceptible to fatal hemorrhagic disease caused by primary infection with elephant endotheliotropic herpesvirus 1A (EEHV1A). To address this vulnerability, a multi-antigen EEHV1A mRNA vaccine has been administered to EEHV1A seronegative calves at four institutions. However, the extent to which this vaccine confers protective immunity remains an open question. In November 2023, two juvenile male calves (aged 6 and 7 years) were transferred from Dublin Zoo to the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden and confir…

The impact of size on middle-ear sound transmission in elephants, the largest terrestrial mammal.

Elephants have a unique auditory system that is larger than any other terrestrial mammal. To quantify the impact of larger middle ear (ME) structures, we measured 3D ossicular motion and ME sound transmission in cadaveric temporal bones from both African and Asian elephants in response to air-conducted (AC) tonal pressure stimuli presented in the ear canal (P EC ). Results were compared to similar measurements in humans. Velocities of the umbo (V U ) and stapes (V ST ) were measured using a 3D laser Doppler vibrometer in the 7-13,000 Hz frequency range, stapes velocity serving as a measure of …

Construction of a full mouth speculum facilitating oral examinations, bronchoscopy and gastric tubing in elephants.

OBJECTIVE: Here we tested the application of a full mouth speculum to sedated elephants in human care to gain access to the oral cavity, the trachea (bronchi) and esophagus (stomach) and therefore improve diagnostic and therapeutic options in elephant medicine. The construction of this oral speculum for elephants and the procedure are described. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The oral speculum is a steel construction consisting of 2 bite plates of 0.8 × 60.0 × 8.0 cm attached between 2 threaded guiding poles (40 cm). Through crank handles, the metal plates are dispersed once placed between the elephan…

Serological study on brucellosis in captive elephants (Elephas maximus) and stray dogs in North Thailand.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Brucellosis is considered as an important zoonotic disease caused by various strains of Brucella in numerous host species. Although brucellosis has been reported in almost animal species, the relevance of brucellosis infection and diagnostic technique in Asian elephant (Elephas maximus) has been limited. The present serological investigation aimed to investigate the antibody response to Brucella abortus in captive Asian elephants in North Thailand. Moreover, further serological survey was also conducted to detect the antibody response to Brucella canis in stray dogs cohabit…

USE OF GLUE-ON SHOES TO IMPROVE CONFORMATIONAL ABNORMALITIES IN TWO ASIAN ELEPHANTS ( ELEPHAS MAXIMUS).

This report describes the use of custom-made, glue-on shoes for the front feet of two female adult Asian elephants ( Elephas maximus) with conformational abnormalities. Both elephants had unequal leg lengths. The first elephant also had bilateral fetlock varus causing recurrent nail infections of the fourth digits of the front feet. The second elephant displayed weight shifting. Over several years, multiple shoe prototypes were tested. The current version is made of two types of shoe rubber, glued together and attached to the pad of the shorter leg with a liquid adhesive. The first elephant al…

Prolactin secretion and ovarian function in cycling and non-cycling African female elephants (Loxodonta africana).

Reproduction of captive elephants in zoos has shown a low fecundity and requires improvement. One of the reasons for low fecundity is ovarian dysfunction in many female elephants. To investigate whether prolactin has a correlation with ovarian function in female elephants, the serum concentrations of prolactin, progesterone and estradiol-17beta in four African female elephants (one cycling female and three non-cycling female elephants) were measured. Cyclic patterns of prolactin and estradiol-17beta were observed in the cycling female elephant, which tended to be high during the follicular pha…

Use of famciclovir for the treatment of endotheliotrophic herpesvirus infections in Asian elephants (Elephas maximus).

Two juvenile Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) presented with an acute onset of facial edema and lethargy. Examination of the oral cavity of each animal revealed cyanosis of the tip and distal margins of the tongue suggestive of endothelial inclusion body disease (EIBD) of elephants. Whole-blood samples were obtained, and polymerase chain reaction tests confirmed the presence of elephant herpesvirus. The animals were administered famciclovir (Famvir, SmithKline Beecham Pharmaceuticals, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 19101, USA), a potent human anti-herpesvirus drug, in the course of their disease,…

Prevalence of Intestinal Parasites in Captive Asian Elephants (Elephas maximus Linnaeus, 1758) in Central Nepal.

INTRODUCTION: The Asian elephants (Elephas maximus), despite their larger physical structure and strength, are often attacked by microorganisms, like gastrointestinal (GI) parasites, resulting in higher morbidity and mortality. AIMS: The current study aimed to determine the prevalence and diversity of GI parasites in the endangered Asiatic elephants reared in captivity in and around Chitwan National Park in Central Nepal. METHODS: With age and sex variants, 63 fresh faecal samples (N = 63) were collected non-invasively and transferred to the research laboratory for microscopic examination. …

Scanning electron microscopy of Quilonia renniei from Asian elephants revealing variation in coronal leaflet number.

Although parasitic nematodes in the genera Murshidia and Quilonia (family Strongylidae) are recognized as major gastrointestinal parasites in Asian elephants, they have been poorly studied. Recently, light micrographs of these parasites in Myanmar have been presented, almost 100 years after the original drawings. However, the number of coronal leaflets, a key taxonomic feature of Quilonia species, has not been precisely determined based on light microscopy. The current study aimed to determine the exact number of coronal leaflets in Quilonia renniei specimens from Asian elephants in Myanmar. O…

PHARMACOKINETICS OF ORALLY ADMINISTERED FLUNIXIN MEGLUMINE IN AFRICAN (LOXODONTA AFRICANA) AND ASIAN (ELEPHAS MAXIMUS) ELEPHANTS.

Flunixin meglumine is the most commonly used nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug used to treat elephants; however, no pharmacokinetic study for flunixin has yet been conducted in these species, and dosages used range widely. Pharmacokinetic parameters of flunixin were determined in African (Loxodonta africana) and Asian (Elephas maximus) elephants after single-dose oral administration of 0.8 and 1.5 mg/kg flunixin paste in each species. Elephant compliance to oral administration of banamine was occasionally challenging, especially among older, female African elephants. After administration of …

Mass sterilization of a common palm species by elephants in Kruger National Park, South Africa.

Chronic herbivory by elephants rarely eliminates any species of woody savanna plants because these plants are typically vigorous basal resprouters after damage by fire or herbivory. In some instances, resprouting after elephant herbivory even increases stem numbers per unit area compared to protected areas. It is thus difficult to know whether an area has been severely degraded by elephant herbivory or not because although trees may be severely reduced in size, they will still be present and may even be relatively dense. By using an elephant exclosure in the Kruger National Park, South Africa,…
