Near-infrared fluorescent imaging techniques for the detection and preservation of parathyroid glands during endocrine surgery.

OBJECTIVES: In over 30% of all thyroid surgeries, complications arise from transient and definitive hypoparathyroidism, underscoring the need for real-time identification and preservation of parathyroid glands (PGs). Here, we evaluate the promising intraoperative optical technologies available for the identification, preservation, and functional assessment of PGs to enhance endocrine surgery. METHODS: We performed a review of the literature to identify published studies on fluorescence imaging in thyroid and parathyroid surgery. RESULTS: Fluorescence imaging is a well-demonstrated approach f

Salivary glands as a potential gene transfer target for gene therapeutics of some monogenetic endocrine disorders.

Salivary glands (SGs) exhibit several important features which are also common to endocrine glands: self-containment due to a surrounding capsule, highly efficient protein production and the ability to secrete proteins into the bloodstream. We have hypothesized that SGs are potentially useful as gene transfer targets for the correction of inherited monogenetic endocrine disorders. In the present communication, we extend our studies and attempt to test our hypothesis by comparing the efficacy of two commonly used viral vectors and the resulting serum and salivary distribution of transgene encod…

Hormones and endocrine glands of fishes. Studies of fish endocrinology reveal major physiologic and evolutionary problems.

The structures discussed above illustrate some of the evolutionary knowledge to be obtained from studies of the comparative biology of the endocrine system among the fishes (see also 17, 78). The interrenal (adrenocortical) gland is an example of an endocrine structure which shows great morphologic variation in the vertebrate series, and among the fishes themselves. The structural variability implies little selective value for any particular pattern, and, in fact, biochemically the interrenal tissue would seem to be involved in much the same kind of steroidogenesis in the vertebrates generally

Folliculostellate Cells at the Crossroads of Inflammation, Endocrine Regulation, and Aging in the Pituitary Gland.

BACKGROUND: Folliculostellate (FS) cells are non-endocrine cells of the anterior pituitary with roles in local communication, immune-endocrine regulation, and tissue homeostasis. Although they comprise only a small fraction of the gland, FS cells exert paracrine influence on hormone-secreting cells and respond to immune signals, particularly through interleukin-6 production. SUMMARY: This review outlines classical and newly described features of FS cells, and we also examine their dual role in pituitary tumorigenesis, where they may both promote and restrain tumor growth depending on context.

Endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma of the eyelid - A diagnostic challenge.

Skin adnexal or sweat gland neoplasms are rare adnexal tumors that pose a diagnostic challenge for both ophthalmologists and pathologists. Endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma (EMPSGC) is an uncommon low grade carcinoma of eccrine ducts with a predilection to occur in the periocular region in the elderly female. We present a rare case of 65-year-old healthy male who presented with a lobulated mass in the left eye lower lid, clinically suspected as sebaceous gland carcinoma, diagnosed as endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma histopathologically.

A case of endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma with distant metastasis.

Endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma (EMPSGC) is a rare cutaneous adnexal neoplasm typically arising on the face of older individuals, most commonly around the eyelids. Histopathologic features include a circumscribed proliferation of low-grade epithelioid cells with areas of cystic and cribriform growth, foci of intracytoplasmic and extracellular mucin, and coexpression of endocrine, neuroendocrine, and cytokeratin markers by immunohistochemistry. Given histopathologic and immunohistochemical similarities, EMPSGC is often likened to solid papillary carcinoma of the breast and endoc

Expression of neuromedins S and U and their receptors in the hypothalamus and endocrine glands of the rat.

Neuromedin S (NMS) and neuromedin U (NMU) are regulatory peptides that share the C-terminal amino-acid sequence and act via common G protein … rked differences in the level of expression of NMU, NMS and their receptors in the hypothalamus and endocrine glands of the rat suggest that in this species such neuromedins may play different roles in the functional regulation of neuroendocrine axes.

[Status of the endocrine function of the thymus gland in the normal and complicated course of pregnancy].

A total of 84 women with normal pregnancy and those with threatened abortions were examined, as were 28 healthy nonpregnant women, to estimate the function of the thymus. The findings evidence enhancement of the endocrine function of the thymus in pregnancy, this function being assessed from the thymic serum factor titer. The function activation is related to pregnancy course and is more marked in threatened abortion. Before labor the thymic serum factor titers are the highest and they persist high after spontaneous delivery. The biological sense of thymic hormonal function activation in pregn

Effect of hypothalamic deafferentation on hypophysial and other endocrine gland blood flows.

The effects of partial or complete deafferentation of the medical basal hypothalamus (MBH) on blood flow through endocrine glands was evaluated using a modification of Sapirstein's indicator fractionation method. Adult female Wistar rats were distributed into three groups consisting of normal control animals (n = 12), animals in which rostral deafferentation (Rd) of the MBH was performed (n = 11), and animals in which complete deafferentation (Cd) of the MBH was done (n = 6). Three weeks after the surgical procedures, Cd reduced adenohypophysial weight by 30% and raised its blood flow levels b…

Management of the Parathyroid Glands During Preventive Thyroidectomy in Patients With Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Type 2.

OBJECTIVES: Patients with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 (MEN2) have mutations in the RET protooncogene and virtually all of them will develop medullary thyroid carcinoma. Family members identified by genetic testing are candidates for preventive thyroidectomy. Management of the parathyroids during thyroidectomy is controversial. Some experts advocate total parathyroidectomy with autotransplantation, whereas others recommend preserving the parathyroids in situ. METHODS: Between 1993 and 2000, we performed preventive thyroidectomies on 50 patients with MEN2A (group A). All patients had a

Hydroxychloroquine enhances the endocrine secretion of adenovirus-directed growth hormone from rat submandibular glands in vivo.

Use of gene transfer technology for treating single protein deficiency disorders requires delivery of therapeutic levels of the transgene product. We have suggested that salivary glands may provide a potentially valuable target site for certain systemic applications of gene therapeutics (He et al., Gene Ther. 1998;5:537-541). However, the ability of salivary glands to deliver therapeutic proteins to either the upper gastrointestinal tract via saliva or to the bloodstream, as required, must be carefully evaluated. In the anterior pituitary gland, human growth hormone (hGH) is secreted into the

Expression of CD56/N-CAM antigen and some other adhesion molecules in various human endocrine glands.

CD56/N-CAM antigen, 140 kDa isoform of neural cell adhesion molecule (N-CAM) has been previously traced by some of us in follicular epithelium of human thyroid by immunohistochemistry. The reaction product was cell membrane bound, being stronger in hyperactive thyroid as compared to colloid goiter. In the current study, CD56 was searched in other endocrine glands and their tumors including parathyroids, adrenal cortex and parafollicular C cells of the thyroid (TT cell line). The antigen was also examined in the tissue extracts of endocrine and nonendocrine organs by dot blot immunoassay and an…

The endocrine secretion of human insulin and growth hormone by exocrine glands of the gastrointestinal tract.

The exocrine pancreas, liver, and submandibular glands of the rat were used to express and secrete two exogenous, human protein hormones (growth hormone and insulin) into blood at physiological concentrations. Transfection, expression, and secretion were achieved by the in vivo retrograde injection of plasmid DNA into the secretory ducts of these glands. Pancreatic acinar cells secreted physiological concentrations of growth hormone into the circulation, and its secretion was enhanced by cholinergic stimulation. A human insulin gene was engineered to allow normal processing of insulin in non-b

[Functional state of the endocrine glands and the immune system in patients with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis].

A total of 35 patients aged from 5 to 12 years old suffering from the articular, visceral or polyarticular form of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) were examined. The functional state of the endocrine glands were determined by means of appliances intended for radioimmunological study. To characterize the immune status of patients the conventional methods of investigation were used. The analysis of the material showed that all the patients with JRA had disorders in the system: hypophysis--adrenal cortex, the system: hypophysis-thyroid gland and pancreas suffer to the least degree. Disorders …

An electron microscopic radioautographic identification of the APUD endocrine cells in the rat gastric pyloric glands.

The rat stomach was shown some years ago to contain numerous endocrine cells with APUD ability--cells that could take up the amino acids L-5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) or L-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-DOPA) and could decarboxylate them to their respective amines, 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT, serotonin) and dopamine, by means of the enzyme DOPA-decarboxylase. In a recent study, most of the APUD endocrine cells in the rat oxyntic mucosa were shown by electron microscopic radioautography to be the enterochromaffinlike cells, while the A-like cells were shown to lack APUD ability. To identify the APUD
