Effective outcomes in cardiothoracic surgical research using rodents are dependent upon adequate techniques for intubation and mechanical ventilation. Multiple methods are available for intubation of the rat; however, not all techniques are appropriate for survival studies. A case of postoperative haemolytic and cholastatic jaundice after cholecystectomy with no G-6-PD activity is reported. Enflurane is supposed to be the cause in this postoperative jaundice. Considering the fact that Glucose-6-Phosphate-Dehydrogenase deficiency is quite common depending on the patients' origin, this cause must be taken into account and the G-6-PD activity of the erythrocyts should be determined.

Liver biopsy specimens of 24 patients who had elective laparotomies were studied by electron microscopy for evidence of anesthesia-related toxic changes. We describe a patient with myotonic dystrophy who required open-heart surgery for an atrial septal defect. He also had a sick sinus syndrome and an abnormal myocardium on histological examination. Anaesthesia using fentanyl, droperidol, nitrous oxide and a low concentration of enflurane was uneventful. Atelectasis of the left lung developed on the first postoperative day after removal of the tracheal tube. This was successfully treated by fibreoptic bronchoscopy.
