Epidemiologic and Environmental Risk Factors of Rift Valley Fever in Southern Africa from 2008 to 2011.

BACKGROUND: Rift Valley fever (RVF) outbreaks have been associated with periods of widespread and above-normal rainfall over several months. Knowledge on the environmental factors influencing disease transmission dynamics has provided the basis for developing models to predict RVF outbreaks in Africa. From 2008 to 2011, South Africa experienced the worst wave of RVF outbreaks in almost 40 years. We investigated rainfall-associated environmental factors in southern Africa preceding these outbreaks. METHODS: RVF epizootic records obtained from the World Animal Health Information Database (WAHID

Molecular signatures of epithelial ovarian cancer: analysis of associations with tumor characteristics and epidemiologic risk factors.

BACKGROUND: Six gene expression subtypes of invasive epithelial ovarian cancer were recently defined using microarrays by Tothill and colleagues. The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) project subsequently replicated these subtypes and identified a signature predictive of survival in high-grade serous (HGS) cancers. We previously validated these signatures for use in formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissues. The aim of the present study was to determine whether these signatures are associated with specific ovarian cancer risk factors, which would add to the evidence that they reflect the heterogeneous

An epidemiologic study of risk factors for deep vein thrombosis in medical outpatients: the Sirius study.

BACKGROUND: Little information is available concerning risk factors for venous thromboembolism (VTE) in nonhospitalized patients. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: An epidemiologic case-control study of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) risk factors was conducted in 1272 outpatients by general practitioners. The case population (636 patients presenting with DVT) was paired with the control population (636 patients presenting with influenzal or rhinopharyngeal syndrome) according to sex and age. Deep vein thrombosis was to be documented by at least 1 objective test. Risk factors were classified into "intrins

[The role of exogenous factors in the etiology of congenital hip dislocation: a socio-epidemiologic study].

The authors present in their work the results of the analysis of the relation between congenital dislocation of vertebral joints and social factors which they have found out in 120 children singled out of 9516 live-born children in the Martin district (Slovakia) in the period 1979-1983. The investigation of social factors has been based on the analysis of socioeconomic and social conditions of the Martin district which has no regional particularities. According to their results the share of exogenous factors in the origin and development of this disease is manifested more frequently in the fir

Risk factors for sudden intrauterine unexplained death: epidemiologic characteristics of singleton cases in Oslo, Norway, 1986-1995.

OBJECTIVE: The epidemiologic characteristics of unexplained stillbirths are largely unknown or unreliable. We define sudden intrauterine unexplained death as a death that occurs antepartum and results in a stillbirth for which there is no explanation despite postmortem examinations, and we present risk factors for this type of stillbirth in singleton gestations. STUDY DESIGN: Singleton antepartum stillbirths (n = 291) and live births (n = 582) in Oslo were included and compared with national data (n = 2025 and n = 575,572, respectively). Explained stillbirths (n = 165) and live births in Oslo

Molecular approaches to epidemiologic evaluation of viruses as risk factors for patients who have chronic fatigue syndrome.

One approach to understanding the chronic fatigue syndrome might be to carry out prospective studies of fatigue that occurs following infection with viral diseases of known etiology, such as influenza, hepatitis, and infectious mononucleosis. Among the viral parameters that should be evaluated are virus burden, variation of virus strain, sites of viral replication, and the state of the viral life cycle (e.g., latent or replicative). Immunologic studies should focus on the humoral and cellular responses to defined viral gene products to identify subtle, individual variations in immune recogniti

[An epidemiologic study of neurosis among 3809 aged people with special reference to factors influencing its outcome].

An epidemiological survey was conducted to assess the prevalence as well as clinical features of neurosis among 3,809 aged people in an urban residential area of Beijing with 50,639 population. It was found, contrary to expectation, that the prevalence was 2.96% and preponderant symptoms seemed to be worrisome, tense, irritable and depressive. Neurasthenia and anxious--depressive neurosis were most frequently diagnosed before or after the age of 60, respectively. Factors were analysed in relation to the causation of illness, indicating that family status, family structure, personal attitude to

Risk factors for thyroid cancer: an epidemiological review focused on nutritional factors.

OBJECTIVES: The present review summarizes epidemiological evidence on risk factors for thyroid cancer (TC), in particular, nutritional factors. METHODS: Searches of articles on the issue were conducted using MEDLINE. RESULTS: Exposure to ionizing radiation, particularly during childhood, is the best-established risk factor for TC. There is also a strong association with history of benign nodules/adenoma or goiter. Iodine deficiency may induce an increasing incidence of benign thyroid conditions, but very high iodine intake also affects thyroid function and, possibly, TC risk. Among dietary f

Epidemiologic Characterization and Risk Factors for Congenital Syphilis in Northeast Mexico: A Case-control Study 2016-2024.

BACKGROUND: Congenital syphilis (CS) is an infectious disease caused by Treponema pallidum , which is transmitted through the placenta during pregnancy. Since 2001, a notable and consistent rise in the prevalence of CS cases has been observed, especially in low- and middle-income countries. Currently, information regarding the risk factors for this phenomenon has been scarcely addressed. METHODS: A case-control study was conducted to analyze the risk factors for CS. Cases of CS were defined according to scenarios 1 and 2 from Centers for Disease Control criteria, while controls were considere

Human spotted fever group Rickettsia seroprevalence and associated epidemiologic factors among diverse, marginalized populations in South Carolina.

Illness caused by spotted fever group Rickettsia (SFGR) is increasing nationally, with affluent, white residents most likely to be diagnosed. The common under-representativeness of marginalized populations in research studies and these vulnerable populations' health inequities make veritable epidemiologic risk factor profiling challenging, which inhibits equitable public health intervention. The current study leveraged 749 banked sera and associated surveys from a cross-sectional minority-represented COVID-19 study to perform an SFGR seroprevalence investigation. SFGR titers (1:64, 1:128, 1:25

Recent advances in the epidemiologic investigation of risk factors for asthma: a review of the 2011 literature.

The present review aims to identify and summarize epidemiologic investigations published during 2011 on the environmental risk factors for asthma. Potentially eligible papers were identified by a MEDLINE search. In total, 1,130 items were retrieved. Based on a broad definition of environment, the following topics were included: obesity, diet, vitamin D, air pollution, farming environment, and social factors. Some of the more relevant contributions included evidence that 1) obesity precedes asthma, 2) fruit consumption is longitudinally associated with a lower risk of asthma and atopy, 3) a com

Comparison of knowledge on filariasis and epidemiologic factors between infected and uninfected respondents in a Malay community.

A study to identify the knowledge of infected and uninfected respondents on filariasis and epidemiologic factors in one endemic community in Malaysia to determine their role in the transmission and control of filariasis was carried out. The data were collected by non-participant observations and interviews using semi-structured schedules. The majority of respondents in both groups had knowledge of filariasis. There was no marked difference between male and female respondents, and similarly, there was fair distributions of knowledgeable respondents with and without some years of schooling. On f

Risk factors in dengue shock syndrome: a prospective epidemiologic study in Rayong, Thailand. I. The 1980 outbreak.

In January 1980, the municipal area of Rayong, Thailand, and contiguous suburban villages were chosen for a long-term study on dengue epidemiology. From 3,185 children randomly sampled in schools and households, the population prevalence of neutralizing antibody to the four dengue serotypes was estimated. To estimate the incidence of infection with each dengue virus serotype (dengue seroconversions), first grade children were re-bled in January 1981 (cohort study). Children admitted to hospital were studied for dengue virus isolation and antibody responses in paired sera. An epidemic of dengue

Epidemiology and prognostic factors of acute erythroid leukemia.

BACKGROUND: Acute erythroid leukemia (AEL) is a rare, highly aggressive subtype of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) characterized by a propensity for early progression and recurrence and is associated with an unfavorable overall prognosis. However, the epidemiological characteristics and risk factors associated with AEL remain poorly understood. In this study, we aimed to examine the epidemiology, clinical characteristics, and survival trends associated with AEL. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of AEL data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database (2000-2

Epidemiology, Risk Factors, and Management of Biphasic Anaphylaxis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Biphasic anaphylaxis is a variant of anaphylaxis characterized by recurrence of symptoms after initial resolution of anaphylaxis. It was first described in the mid 1990s by Popa and Lerner. Our understanding of the pathophysiology and epidemiology of the condition has advanced considerably since then. The purpose of this manuscript is to review the literature surrounding biphasic anaphylaxis while highlighting key works and recent advances. RECENT FINDINGS: Prior studies have estimated biphasic anaphylaxis occurs in 0.4-20% of anaphylaxis episodes. The wide range may be rel
