Epidermal Inclusion Cyst Formation After Barbed Thread Lifting.

Barbed thread lifting is a widely used method because it is easier to learn, faster, and the lower frequency of complications than the invasive lifting technique. The number of reported cases about complication requiring an invasive procedure is very small, and most cases are limited to minor complications. The authors introduce a chronic, recurrent epidermal inclusion cyst that occurs after Barbed thread lifting. A 61-year-old woman visited the hospital with recurrent inflammation and scar accompanied by discharge in the temporal area lasting 2 years. She had barbed thread lifting in the area

Squamous cell carcinoma originated from an epidermal cyst.

Epidermal cyst (EC) of the skin is a very common condition. Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) very infrequently arises from EC. A 76-year-old Japanese woman was admitted to our hospital because of multiple papules in the nose and nasal cavity. The clinical diagnosis was sebaceous hyperplasia. An excisional biopsy was obtained from one papule. Histologically, the papule showed an EC. The EC communicated with the epidermis. Islands of atypical cells with hyperchromatic nuclei and infrequent pearl formation were recognized around and adjacent to EC. No connections were seen between the atypical cell …

Eyelid abscess arising from an epidermal inclusion cyst.

A 72-year-old woman presented with a 3-day history of focal pain and swelling of the left upper eyelid. A cystic lesion had been present in this area for longer than 7 years, and a lesion consistent with an epidermal inclusion cyst was present on the contralateral upper eyelid. An erythematous, tender, fluctuant mass was noted on the left upper eyelid consistent with abscess. It was drained and cultured, and the infection resolved with oral amoxicillin/clavulanate potassium followed by surgical excision. Histopathologic examination demonstrated an epidermal inclusion cyst and cultures grew ana

Epidermal inclusion cyst: cytomorphological features and differential diagnosis.

Aspirates from 162 epidermal inclusion cysts (EIC) from 157 patients were analyzed in order to elaborate on specific cytologic features. The most common site involved was the head and neck region (96 cases; 59.2%). The maximum patients were in the 3rd and 4th decades of life. Aspirates from EIC showed a clear background, with high cellularity, and nucleate and anucleate squames. Keratinous material was seen in some cases but the amount was less compared with the cellular elements. In 31 cases, a diagnosis of infected EIC was made on the basis of dense inflammatory infiltrate in addition to the

Squamous cell carcinoma arising from an epidermal cyst.

There are few case reports in the English literature concerning malignant transformation of an epidermal cyst into squamous cell carcinoma. We report a case of squamous cell carcinoma arising from a 40-year epidermal cyst in the proximal left thigh of a 74-year-old man. The epidermal cyst had increased in size in the previous 3 years. The patient presented with a discharge from the lesion. Ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging of the lesion suggested malignancy. An intra-operative frozen section of an incisional biopsy of the lesion found it to be an epidermal cyst with suspected mali…

Epidermal inclusion cyst of the umbilicus following abdominoplasty.

The incidence of retained epidermal inclusion cyst at the site of the umbilicus following abdominoplasty has yet to be well documented. Compliant patients who are seen in scheduled follow-up, and who display signs of infection or wound issues at the site of the umbilicus, usually have these factors addressed before inclusion cysts manifest. Here, however, we present a patient who underwent abdominoplasty, lost her surgeon because of geographic relocation, presented to our office 1 year following surgery with a large retained umbilical epidermal inclusion cyst. This case gave us a unique opport

Intermetatarsophalangeal bursitis induced by a plantar epidermal cyst.

A 44-year-old woman was admitted to the authors' institution for evaluation of two masses in the right forefoot. Standard radiographs showed foci of calcification within the mass. Magnetic resonance imaging and macroscopic findings during surgery revealed the lesion was composed mainly of two different portions: dorsal cystic masses and a solid mass in the plantar side of the fifth metatarsal head. Histologic and immunohistochemical examinations showed that the former was an intermetatarsophalangeal bursitis induced by keratinous material, whereas the latter was a ruptured epidermal cyst. To t…

Epidermal inclusion cyst of the breast: A case report.

Epidermal inclusion cysts are nonmalignant proliferations of squamous epithelium situated within the dermis. Their presence in the breast is uncommon and presents considerable diagnostic difficulty. This case report aims to elucidate the multimodal imaging findings and differential diagnosis of a rare breast epidermal inclusion cyst, highlighting its capacity to mimic malignant neoplasms. We present a case of a 38-year-old female with a palpable right breast nodule that had progressively increased over a period of 15 years. A clinical examination identified a firm mass in the upper inner quadr

Paraclitoral Epidermal Cysts: A Literature Systematic Review.

Background and Objectives: Epidermal inclusion cysts are benign lesions with usually good prognosis. Clitoral epidermal cysts are very uncommon and can be spontaneous or caused by a prior surgical operation, usually female genital mutilation. Surgical removal of the cyst is the preferred treatment, and it is associated with excellent postoperative results. Materials and Methods: We present the medical history and surgical treatment of a 39-year-old woman with a symptomatic epidermal clitoral cyst. To discuss our case in the context of a synopsis of similar published cases, we conducted a syste…

Epidermal cyst in an unusual site: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Epidermoid cysts can occur in a variety of locations including face, trunk, neck, extremities and scalp. Up to now, those vulvar epidermal cysts reported in the literature were localized on the labia majora and the clitoris. This is the first case of epidermal cyst reported on the labia minora. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 47-year-old, multiparous woman presented with a history of a palpable vulvar mass, without pain but causing difficulty in walking. The large mass was 6cm in diameter and located in the left labium minus. The labial mass was surgically removed. The final pathologic …

An epidermal cyst in the floor of the mouth: a rare presentation.

Epidermal cysts rarely occur in the head and neck region as compared to the dermoid cysts and when they do occur in this region, they present in the floor of the mouth. We are reporting a rare case of an epidermal cyst in the floor of the mouth, with a brief review of the literature.
