The negative feedback mechanism in the epiphyseal-thyroid system was studied. The activating thyroxin influence upon hydroxy-indole-O-methyl-transferase, being the main enzyme of melatonin biosynthesis, was found in experimental Wistar rats. The "dose-response" curves were examined at varying times after thyroxin injections. The results obtained confirm the previous data concerning the activating effect of rat chronic hyperthyroidization on hydroxy-indole-O-methyl-transferase and intensified melatonin excretion with the urine in patients with pronounced thyrotoxicosis.

In the years 1979, 1980 and 1981 a follow-up of 72 epiphyseal of the distal tibia was made. Half of the cases of epiphyseal fractures were treated conservatively, the other half operatively. Epiphysiolyses were treated conservatively without exception. In both groups disturbances of growth with partial closure of the growth plate and following malgrowth were found. Five atypical cases were observed amongst ninety children with Perthes' disease, ten of whom had bilateral hip joint involvement. All five were boys, four being under 4 years of age. Four had bilateral hip joint disease, four presented with hip pain, three showing some degree of retardation of bone growth. The purpose of this study was to determine as to which of the children who present to our unit with a unilateral slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) are most at risk of presenting with a subsequent contralateral SCFE. Between 1988 and 2000, 171 patients presented with unilateral SCFE to our unit, whereas 40 presented with bilateral SCFE. At a minimum of 3 years follow up, 56 of the 171 patients had re-presented with a contralateral SCFE (31%). Externally rotated gait is a hallmark of slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) attributed to the change of proximal femur structure. This study investigated the potential role of abnormal tibial torsion in 44 patients with chronic, stable SCFE. Comparison of the tibiae of the involved side with the uninvolved side and with previously published normal values showed no evidence of tibial torsional abnormalities in these patients.

UNLABELLED: To study the incidence of cone-shaped epiphysis (CSE) among Japanese children, roentgenograms of 1,391 hands in 985 children including 600 normal individuals (621 hands), 325 cases with various hand malformations (650 hands) and 60 cases with various systemic diseases (120 hands) were reviewed. A series of animal experiments was carried out to produce a similar pathological picture, by partially interrupting the circulation in the proximal portion of the tibia in young rabbits.
RESULTS: 1. CSE was found in 13% of the normal individuals with female predominance (female/male = 2.3).

The arrangement of collagene fibers in bone epiphyses and mataphyses form various species of reptiles and mammals was studied with a polarized light microscope and with a scanning electron microscope. In spite of the variety of shape observed in the long bone extremities of different species, the collagenic fibers arrangement in the bone epiphyses and metaphyses appeared constant.
