Persian onager (Equus hemionus onager) endometrial explant cryopreservation and in vitro culture.

Assisted reproduction of endangered equids, such as Persian onagers (Equus hemionus onager), is vital for species conservation. Little is known about Persian onager reproductive functions, including functions of the uterine endometrium. Recently, successful cryopreservation of the domestic mare endometrium was reported, but there is no information on cryo-sensitivity or in vitro culture of endometrial tissues of any non-domestic equid. In the present study, endometrial explants from Persian onagers were cryopreserved and cultured in vitro for 5 days. There was no difference between endometrial

Post-operative pain behaviour associated with surgical castration in donkeys (Equus asinus).

BACKGROUND: Recognising pain in donkeys is challenging because they are stoic. OBJECTIVES: To identify the responses of donkeys before and after surgical pain. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, short-term longitudinal pre- and post-intervention observations. METHODS: Forty adult donkeys underwent surgical castration after sedation with intravenous (IV) xylazine, induction with guaiphenesin/thiopental IV and maintenance of anaesthesia with isoflurane and local anaesthetic blockade. Four hours after recovery from anaesthesia, flunixin meglumine 1.1 mg/kg, dipyrone 10 mg/kg and morphine 0.2 mg/kg IV

Radiographic parameters of the digit in a cohort population of Amiata donkeys.

BACKGROUND: The most common musculoskeletal conditions reported in donkeys are related to the foot. Radiographic examinations are clinically important in the diagnosis of foot abnormalities and are commonly used. However, few studies have been conducted to establish the normal radiographic appearance of a donkey's foot. AIM: To determine the radiographic features of the front digit in healthy Amiata donkeys. METHODS: Radiographic examinations were performed on 56 forefeet of 28 Amiata donkeys. Three radiographic views of each front foot were taken: lateromedial, dorsopalmar and dorso-65°prox

An Epidemiological Study on Orodental Disorders in 3,791 Working Donkeys in Egypt: Prevalence and Risk Factors.

Orodental disorders are common in equidae and can lead to serious clinical complications. This study determines the prevalence rate (PR) of orodental disorders in working donkeys in Egypt and their potential risk factors. During 4 years, 3,791 donkeys were examined in six Egyptian governorates. Full case history and thorough clinical and oral examinations were performed. Radiography and oroendoscopy were undertaken whenever possible. All data were statistically analyzed using Poisson generalized linear models to compare PR among governorates, sex, years, body condition score, and age groups an…

Fasciola hepatica eggs in paleofaeces of the Persian onager Equus hemionus onager, a donkey from Chehrabad archaeological site, dating back to the Sassanid Empire (224-651 AD), in ancient Iran.

Fascioliasis is a highly pathogenic zoonotic disease caused by the liver trematodes Fasciola hepatica and F. gigantica. Within the multidisciplinary initiative against this disease, there is the aim of understanding how this disease reached a worldwide distribution, with important veterinary and medical repercussions, by elucidating the spreading steps followed by the two fasciolids from their paleobiogeograhical origins. Fasciola eggs were detected in paleofaeces of a donkey, probably the present-day endangered Persian onager Equus hemionus onager, found in the Chehrabad salt mine archaeologi

Osteopetrosis in a neonatal donkey.

Osteopetrosis is a rare disorder characterised by a defect in osteoclastic bone resorption. This report describes osteopetrosis in a neonatal donkey that suffered a displaced tibial fracture. Radiographic examination identified generalised reduction in medullary cavity size, thickened mid-diaphyseal cortices and conical metaphyseal bone extending toward the mid-diaphysis of long bones. Postmortem examination identified additional fractures and brittle bones. Histologically, osteoclasts were absent in multiple bone sections. Diaphyseal cortices consisted of concentric bone lamellae with marrow

Zoonoses from pets horses, donkeys and mules: with special references to Egypt.

A zoonosis is an animal disease that is transmissible to humans. Humans are usually an accidental host that acquires disease through close contact with an infected animal, who may or may not be symptomatic. Children are at highest risk for infection because they are more likely to have close contact with pets. Pets are responsible for transmission of an extensive array of bacterial, fungal, and parasitic zoonotic pathogens. The route of transmission can be through the saliva (e.g., bites or contaminated scratches), feces, respiratory secretions, direct contact, or by the animal acting as a veh

Symbolic metal bit and saddlebag fastenings in a Middle Bronze Age donkey burial.

Here we report the unprecedented discovery of the skeleton of a ritually interred donkey with a metal horse bit in association with its teeth and saddlebag fastenings on its back. This discovery in the Middle Bronze Age III sacred precinct (1700/1650-1550 BCE) at Tel Haror, Israel, presents a unique combination of evidence for the early employment of equid harnessing equipment, both for chariot bridling (horse bit) and pack animals (saddlebags). The ritually deposited donkey with its unique accoutrements advances our understanding of the broad social and religious significance of equids in the

Glanders in animals: a review on epidemiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis and countermeasures.

Glanders or farcy, caused by Burkholderia mallei, is an infectious and zoonotic disease of solipeds. Horses, donkeys and mules are the only known natural reservoir of B. mallei. Although glanders has been eradicated from most countries, it has regained the status of a re-emerging disease because of the numerous recent outbreaks. Pre-symptomatic or carrier animals are the potential source of infection for the healthy equine population and play a crucial role in the spreading of the infectious agent. Glanders is characterized by ulcerating nodular lesions of the skin and mucous membrane. General

Epidemiological features of fasciolosis in working donkeys in Ethiopia.

A cross-sectional coprological survey in the tropical regions of Ada, Akaki, Bereh and Boset, and a retrospective post-mortem investigation were conducted to study the epidemiology of fasciolosis in working donkeys in Ethiopia. Faecal samples from 803 donkeys were collected, and the number of liver flukes recovered from 112 donkeys at post-mortem between 1995 and 2004 were analysed. There was a high prevalence of fasciolosis irrespective of the age of the donkeys. The overall prevalence of the infection was 44.4% in coprologically examined donkeys, and the prevalence in the donkeys examined po

A redescription of Cylicocyclus triramosus (Nematoda: Strongyloidea): a parasite of the zebra, Equus burchelli antiquorum.

Cylicocyclus triramosus, a rare species of Cyathostominae from the southern African Burchell's zebra (Equus burchelli antiquorum) is redescribed, and a neotype is proposed. The external leaf-crown of the species consists of 30 elements and the internal leaf-crown numerous small and clear elements. The buccal capsule is cylindrical, oval in cross section, and approximately 3 times as wide as deep. The thin walls of the buccal capsule taper anteriorly from a large ringlike, hoop-shaped thickening around the posterior margin. The dorsal gutter is nipple-shaped. The mouth collar is notched dorsall

Characterization of Cytokines in Donkey Follicular Fluid and Seminal Plasma: A Pilot Study.

Post-breeding endometrial inflammation is a well-known physiological response in jennies, especially after artificial insemination with frozen-thawed sperm. Bioactive molecules present in reproductive fluids, including cytokines, may contribute to regulating these immune processes. The aim of this study was to characterize the cytokine profile of preovulatory follicular fluid (FF) and seminal plasma (SP) in donkeys and to explore their potential relevance for reproductive physiology. To this end, 10 FF samples were collected from five fertile Catalan jennies, and 10 samples were isolated from

Understanding donkey value chain in Kenya: mapping, governance, challenges, and equity.

Donkeys (Equus asinus africanus) play a critical role in rural and peri-urban livelihoods in Kenya, supporting transportation, agriculture, and income generation. Despite their economic and social importance, donkeys remain underrepresented in national policies and development strategies. Limited data exist on the governance structures, operational challenges, and opportunities for upgrading the donkey value chain. This study aimed to map the donkey value chain, assess governance frameworks, identify constraints, and explore upgrading opportunities across diverse Kenyan production systems. A c

Donkey hair cortisol concentrations are associated with carrying heavy load and being beaten at work.

BACKGROUND: Cortisol is often considered an indicator of stress. However, it is not a straightforward indicator of stress in animals and is more closely linked to arousal and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA) axis activation. To better understand what animals are experiencing, other stressors, e.g., donkeys carrying heavy loads and being beaten, should be considered when interpreting cortisol levels. Our research aimed to assess how carrying mounted loads and working in challenging conditions impact donkey hair cortisol concentrations (HCC). For this purpose, thirty-five working donkey

The interaction between seminal plasma, sperm, and endometrium in inter- and intra-species breeding in equids.

IN BRIEF: In some instances, extra-species breeding in equids is more successful than intraspecies breeding; however, little is known about the immunomodulatory effect of donkey semen and seminal plasma on the mare's endometrium. This study compared the mare uterine inflammatory response during extra- and intraspecies breeding. ABSTRACT: Anecdotal experience suggests horse mares have less post-breeding inflammation and better fertility when bred with donkeys. This study aimed to compare the post-breeding inflammatory response of mares exposed to donkey and horse semen and seminal plasma and e

Evaluation of a digital stethoscope for electrocardiographic recording in donkeys: Preliminary results.

The digital stethoscope (DS) is a cost-effective single-lead digital stethoscope that allows simultaneous electrocardiographic (ECG) and phonocardiographic recordings on a smartphone. Despite its application in small animals and horses, there are currently no studies on its use in donkeys. The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of a new smartphone-based DS device in recording ECG tracings in donkeys. Standard base-apex lead ECG (sECG) and single-lead DS ECG (dECG) were simultaneously recorded for at least 30 s. Both sECG and dECG tracings were analysed by the same operator, recording he

Exploration of Parascaris species in three different Equus populations in China.

BACKGROUND: The roundworms, Parascaris spp., are important nematode parasites of foals and were historically model organisms in the field of cell biology, leading to many important discoveries. According to karyotype, ascarids in Equus are commonly divided into Parascaris univalens (2n = 2) and Parascaris equorum (2n = 4). METHODS: Here, we performed morphological identification, karyotyping and sequencing of roundworms from three different hosts (horses, zebras and donkeys). Phylogenetic analysis was performed to study the divergence of these ascarids based on cytochrome c oxidase subunit I

Cystic echinococcosis in donkeys in eastern Africa.

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is endemic in humans and domestic animals in eastern Africa. All the species of the Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato complex have been reported in this region except for E. equinus, possibly due to the small number of studies involving equids. This study reports the frequency of different Echinococcus species in donkeys from eastern Africa. A total of 5961 donkeys were examined during meat inspection in 3 slaughterhouses in Kenya. Identification of Echinococcus spp. was achieved through polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment-length polymorphism and sequenci
