The informative value of functional diagnostic methods in the revealing of the initial stage of essential hypertension (EH) in patients with high risk of cardiovascular complications (CVC) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) was studied. Thirty-two adult Nigerians with mild-to-moderate essential hypertension were included in a double-blind placebo-controlled trial matching nifedipine 20 mg twice daily with placebo for 6 weeks. Nifedipine caused very significant reductions of both systolic and diastolic blood pressures in all patients. The antihypertensive effect of captopril was tested on 19 patients with essential hypertension, WHO grade I or II. A combination of propranolol and hydrallazine was administered to 13 patients with longstanding hypertension during 15 pregnancies. Hydrallazine was continued through labour and delivery in all patients, while in eight patients propranolol was discontinued 2 to 15 days before delivery. Blood pressure control was uniformly good and superimposed pre-eclampsia did not occur during combined therapy. There were 14 livebirths and one unexplained stillbirth. Except for two cases of milk hypoglycemia, there were no neonatal complications.

20 hypertensive patients participating in a professionally supervised programme of transcendental meditation showed no significant change in blood-pressure after a 6-month study.
