The rabies situation in Western Europe.

This analysis of the present rabies situation in Western Europe is based on completed questionnaires from 16 countries. The questionnaire focuses on the years 2005 and 2006. Additional information was obtained from the Rabies Bulletin Europe, and from the OIE's publication on "Historical Perspective of Rabies in Europe and the Mediterranean Basin". Rabies in domestic animals and wild carnivores has become very rare in Western Europe. Only Germany reported a low number of rabid foxes for 2005. Bat rabies was observed in four countries. One imported human case was seen in the UK, while Germany r

Epidemiology of rabies in Southeast Europe.

Rabies remains endemic within a number of countries in Southeast Europe including Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey. With the probable expansion of the European Union eastwards, it is likely that rabies elimination programs will be increased to reduce the burden of disease in new accession countries. A clear understanding of the epidemiology of the virus in this area of Europe is vital before such programs are introduced. With the exception of Turkey, the red fox (Vulpes vulpes) is the principal disease reservoir in Southeastern Europe. However, cases of rabies in the dog (Canis familiaris) are reg

Anaplasma phagocytophilum in ruminants in Europe.

The agent that causes tick-borne fever (TBF) in sheep was first described in 1940, 8 years after the disease was first recognized in Scotland. The same agent was soon shown to cause TBF in sheep and pasture fever in cattle in other parts of the UK, Scandinavia, and other parts of Europe. After the initial use of the name Rickettsia phagocytophila, the organism was given the name Cytoecetes phagocytophila to reflect its association with granulocytes and its morphological similarity with Cytoecetes microti. This name continued to be used by workers in the UK until the recent reclassification of

Characteristics of binge drinkers in Europe.

Binge drinking has been shown to be associated with considerable social harm and disease burden. This review aims to give an overview from a European perspective of the socio-demographical, individual, and social factors that affect binge drinking and to identify effective interventions to reduce binge drinking. To this end, a computer-assisted search of relevant articles was conducted. Results showed that males tended to binge drinking more frequently than females. Binge drinking was most prevalent among adolescents and young adults, and prevalence levelled off later in life. Socio-economic c

[Portugal and Europe are poliomyelitis free].

On the 21st of June 2002, in Copenhagen, the Regional Commission for the Certification of Poliomyelitis Eradication, declared the European Region of the World Health Organization (WHO) as polio-free. The last case (not imported) of poliomyelitis in Europe had occurred in November 1998. The health impact is enormous. In Portugal, the last case of poliomyelitis caused by the wild poliovirus, had occurred in December 1986. The path to eradication in Portugal had begun with a vaccination campaign in 1965/1966, with the oral polio vaccine (Sabin). High vaccination coverage has been maintained since

Epidemiology of primary hyperparathyroidism in Europe.

Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is one of the most common endocrine diseases. Its clinical presentation has dramatically changed in the last 40 years, and now the disease typically affects elderly women and is characterized by mild hypercalcemia and few traditional classic (bone and kidney) manifestations. The change in clinical presentation was largely caused by development of automated serum calcium measurement in the early 1970s that made possible the introduction of serum calcium determination in the routine biochemical screening and the identification of a large number of "asymptomatic

[Europe and medicines: role of the EMEA].

F. Sauer. Ann Pharm Fr 2000, 58: 278-285. The new European authorization system has made considerable progress since 1995. The European Agency for the Evaluation of Medicinal Products (EMEA) is primarily responsible for the scientific evaluation of applications for a European marketing authorization for medicinal products derived from biotechnology and other high technology (centralised procedure). For other products, the EMEA arbitrates where mutual recognition of national marketing authorizations between the Member States is not possible (decentralised procedure). The EMEA co-ordinates the s

The seroepidemiology of rubella in western Europe.

Most of the countries in western Europe have now implemented mass infant rubella immunization programmes, instead of or in addition to selective vaccination in order to achieve the elimination of congenital rubella syndrome. The European countries Denmark, England and Wales, Finland, France, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands undertook large, national serological surveys collecting several thousand serum specimens during 1994-8. Antibodies against rubella virus were detected by a variety of enzyme immuno-assays. Comparability of the assay results was achieved by a standardized methodology. The

The epidemiology of Neisseria gonorrhoeae in Europe.

This review addresses the occurrence, the trends, and the risk groups of Neisseria gonorrhoeae in Europe over the past decade. A decline has been observed in most of Europe since the 1980s, except for an increase in the Baltic countries (early 1990s) and an increase among men who have sex with men (between 1989 and 1991), and heterosexuals in some countries (between 1995 and 1997). Despite the overall fall in the incidence of gonorrhoea, plasmid-mediated resistance to penicillin and tetracycline increased in Europe. More recently, resistance to fluoroquinolones has been documented, mainly impo

The epidemiology of HTLV-I in Europe.

Although human T-lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) infection in Europe is thought to be unusual except amongst people who have immigrated from countries where HTLV-I is endemic, the screening of blood donors has revealed a low seroprevalence across Europe, not only in donors originating from endemic areas but also in the indigenous population. Data from blood donors should not be extrapolated to other groups because blood donors are selected to be at low risk of parenterally transmissible infections. Unfortunately only small studies have been conducted in other population groups, including wo

[Prevention of congenital toxoplasmosis in Europe].

To sound out prevalent opinions among health authorities in Europe concerning the control and prevention of congenital toxoplasmosis (CT), a questionnaire was sent to the 28 WHO member countries in Europe. The questionnaire was returned by 23 countries. Only 7 countries recommend systematic screening of pregnant women. The reasons given by the 14 countries which do not recommend systematic screening are diverse: recommendations are in preparation, unfavourable cost-benefit return, absence of satisfactory treatment, programme not possible, incidence level too low, etc. 11 countries have a surve

Epidemiology on malignant melanoma in Europe.

Mortality and incidence of malignant melanoma of the skin is increasing at a rate of between 3 and 7% per year in many European countries. All over Europe melanoma is the cancer showing the most rapid increase in incidence. Within Europe the variation in incidence and mortality rates is close to a factor of ten with the disease being more common in northern than in southern Europe. Higher rates are consistently reported on intermittently exposed body sites. Skin melanoma differ from non-melanoma skin cancer with regard to sex-, age-, and anatomic distribution. There is mounting evidence from a

[A review of the mammalian Mallophaga of Europe].

The paper reviews the present knowledge of the Mallophaga of European mammals. 50 species and subspecies have been listed in a checklist and a host-parasite list. 32 of them are still found in Europe. There have been no records so far of 21 hosts listed as hypothetical mallophagian hosts. Eight extinct or exterminated forms of mammals in Europe are listed as hypothetical hosts of chewing louse.
