Attentional ERPs in consumers of smoked and insufflated cocaine associated with neuropsychological performance.

BACKGROUND: Cocaine consumption is associated with reduced attentional event-related potentials (ERPs), namely P3a and P3b, indicating bottom-up and top-down deficits respectively. At cognitive level, these impairments are larger for faster routes of administration (e.g., smoked cocaine [SC]) than slower routes (e.g., insufflated cocaine [IC]). Here we assess these ERPs considering the route of cocaine administration. We hypothesized that SC dependent (SCD) would exhibit reduced amplitude of the P3a, while both SCD and IC dependent (ICD) would show reduced amplitude of the P3b. METHODS: We ex

Preprogramming motor dysfunction in paroxysmal kinesigenic choreoathetosis.

Paroxysmal kinesigenic choreoathetosis (PKC) is characterized by abnormal involuntary movements precipitated by sudden movement. As a result, a possible impairment of cerebral organization of voluntary motor activity is hypothesized in PKC. We examined a 14-year-old boy affected by a sporadic form of PKC, adopting a multimodal psychophysiological approach, including P300, contingent negative variation (CNV) and a specific paradigm for the study of movement related potentials (MRPs). Recordings were made before and after phenobarbital therapy. No changes were observed in the non-motor parameter

Changes in auditory P300 with clinical remission in schizophrenia: effects of facial-affect stimuli.

The auditory P300 is affected by arousal and emotion. We examined the effect of drawings expressing sadness or pleasure on auditory event-related potentials (ERP) during recovery from schizophrenia. Oddball-paradigm auditory ERP were recorded while presenting one of these drawings to nine patients with paranoid schizophrenia and seven patients with other types of schizophrenia during the acute stage and again during remission. P300 parameters (amplitude, area, and latency), reaction time, and symptom scores were evaluated. P300 amplitude and area were significantly greater in the recovery than

Developmental dyslexia and attention dysfunction in adults: brain potential indices of information processing.

Event-related brain potentials (ERPs) were recorded from a group of 13 men with severe developmental dyslexia and 15 matched normal controls. Auditory and visual stimuli, presented in separate reaction time tasks of graded difficulty, were used to elicit ERPs. No group differences in P300 were seen under relatively undemanding task conditions. However, as task demands increased, visual P300 was reduced in the dyslexic men as compared with the normal readers. An Abbreviated Conners Parent Rating Scale was used to assess retrospectively childhood symptoms of attention-deficit hyperactivity disor

P300 and the risk for alcoholism: family history, task difficulty, and gender.

P300 event-related brain potentials (ERPs) were obtained from 20 pairs of male and 20 pairs of female undergraduate subjects. One member of each pair reported having a father who was alcoholic (FHP), the other reported no known alcoholic biological relative (FHN). Pair members were matched on age, height, weight, grade point average, and personal drinking history. Three auditory tasks which differed in stimulus discrimination difficulty were presented to each subject. All tasks employed 20% target and 80% standard tones with the subject required to move their index finger whenever a target sti

[A comparative study of the P300 wave and evoked theta-rhythm in schizophrenia and personality disorders].

OBJECTIVE: Amplitude and latency of evoked potential P300 are considered as major correlates of cognitive functions. At the same time the changes in the theta-band event-related oscillations that appears at the same time window as P300 wave are less studied. The purpose of this study was to provide the complex assessment and comparison of neurophysiological indices of cognitive processes in healthy people and patients with personality disorder, schizotypal disorder and schizophrenia with different levels of cognitive dysfunction. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The total number of participants was 124,

Deficits in response inhibition on varied levels of demand load in anorexia nervosa: an event-related potentials study.

PURPOSE: The aim of the present study was to investigate the executive function of inhibitory control in anorexia nervosa (AN), which is considered as an underlying pathophysiology of restricting eating. METHODS: In this work, we examined the function of response inhibition in 27 unmedicated AN patients and 30 healthy controls (HC) using stop-signal tasks with different demand loads. Two event-related potentials (ERP) during the stop-signal tasks, N2 and P300, were compared between the AN and HC groups. RESULTS: We found attenuated P300 amplitudes and delayed N2 latencies in AN patients acro

Long-term influence of recurrent acute otitis media on neural involuntary attention switching in 2-year-old children.

BACKGROUND: A large group of young children are exposed to repetitive middle ear infections but the effects of the fluctuating hearing sensations on immature central auditory system are not fully understood. The present study investigated the consequences of early childhood recurrent acute otitis media (RAOM) on involuntary auditory attention switching. METHODS: By utilizing auditory event-related potentials, neural mechanisms of involuntary attention were studied in 22-26 month-old children (N = 18) who had had an early childhood RAOM and healthy controls (N = 19). The earlier and later phas

Heritability of the neural response to emotional pictures: evidence from ERPs in an adult twin sample.

Affect-modulated event-related potentials (ERPs) are increasingly used to study psychopathology and individual differences in emotion processing. Many have suggested that variation in these neural responses reflects genetically mediated risk. However, to date, no studies have demonstrated genetic contributions to affect-modulated ERPs. The present study therefore sought to examine the heritability of a range of ERPs elicited during affective picture viewing. One hundred and thirty monozygotic and 124 dizygotic twin pairs passively viewed 30 pleasant, 30 neutral and 30 unpleasant images for 6 s

Effects of task repetition on event-related potentials in somatosensory Go/No-go paradigm.

We investigated the effects of task repetition on the N140 and P300 components of event-related potentials (ERPs) in somatosensory Go/No-go paradigms. A Go or No-go stimulus was presented to the second or fifth digit of the left hand, respectively, at the same probability, and subjects had to respond by pushing a button with their right thumb as quickly as possible only after the presentation of a Go stimulus. The condition comprised seven sessions of recordings, and subjects were allowed to relax for five minutes after one session. The behavioral data for the reaction time (RT), standard devi

Insights from ERPs into attention during recovery after cerebellar stroke: a case report.

The role of the cerebellum in cognitive performance and attentional processes is a focus of research in recent years. We investigated the P300 component in a patient with a left posterior cerebellar ischemic stroke during both the acute phase and over 4 weeks of follow-up. After stroke, auditory event-related potentials showed a reduction in P3 amplitude, which appears to improve instead after 4 weeks of follow-up. These event-related potential findings could suggest a specific neural pattern of disruption in selective attention during the discrimination processes of the stimulus following a p

Evoked potentials in subjects at risk for Alzheimer's disease.

Evoked potential (EP) changes accompanying dementing processes have been documented in a number of studies. However, EPs have not been studied in subjects who are at heightened risk for the development of Alzheimer's Disease (AD). Nineteen volunteers with no immediate family members with a history of AD and 33 healthy subjects with at least one first-degree relative with AD were studied. Of the 33 subjects with a positive family history of AD, the illness of the sick relative was classified as possible AD in 10 subjects, probable AD in 17 subjects, and definite (autopsy-proven) AD in 6 subject

The evaluation of Hashimoto's thyroiditis with event-related potentials and magnetic resonance spectroscopy and its relation to cognitive function.

Thyroid dysfunction is very often accompanied by cognitive and affective disorders. The frequency of these disorders in patients with compensated Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) is unknown. The aim of the present study was to evaluate brain dysfunction in euthyroid HT patients by means of event-related potentials (ERP) and magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) and to correlate it with cognitive function. 68 patients with HT (59 female, 9 male) and 45 healthy controls were included in the study. All the patients underwent ERP including an analysis of N200 and P300 response parameters. MRS voxels w

An EEG evoked response protocol to assess brain function alterations post-concussion in professional and amateur rugby clubs.

BACKGROUND: Concussion is a prevalent and high-profile injury in contact and collision sports like Rugby. Establishing objective markers of concussion is a critical priority to support safe return-to-play (RTP) decisions. Head injuries alter the spectral characteristics of electroencephalography (EEG) signals, highlighting the need for scalable EEG assessment protocols that can be implemented by Rugby clubs during post-injury evaluations. STUDY AIM: To integrate an easy to use, scalable EEG post-concussion assessment to test for P300 amplitude change associated with concussion that was access

Fluctuations in arousal reflect latent state transitions that facilitate behavioural optimization.

People are often faced with surprising events that defy expectations. Such events elicit transient activity in the locus coeruleus/norepinephrine system and elevation of peripheral arousal markers including pupil dilation and a late positive peak in stimulus evoked EEG response, the P300, but the function of these signals remains unclear. We propose that they reflect latent state transitions that dynamically control the mental context governing learning and perception. We tested and confirmed five preregistered predictions of this theory using EEG and pupil measurements collected from people p

Brain vital signs detect concussion-related neurophysiological impairments in ice hockey.

There is a growing demand for objective evaluations of concussion. We developed a portable evoked potential framework to extract 'brain vital signs' using electroencephalography. Brain vital signs were derived from well established evoked responses representing auditory sensation (N100), basic attention (P300), and cognitive processing (N400) amplitudes and latencies, converted to normative metrics (six total). The study evaluated whether concussion-related neurophysiological impairments were detected over the duration of ice hockey seasons using brain vital signs. Forty-seven Tier III, Junior

P3 event-related potentials and childhood maltreatment in successful and unsuccessful psychopaths.

Although P3 event-related potential abnormalities have been found in psychopathic individuals, it is unknown whether successful (uncaught) psychopaths and unsuccessful (caught) psychopaths show similar deficits. In this study, P3 amplitude and latency were assessed from a community sample of 121 male adults using an auditory three-stimulus oddball task. Psychopathy was assessed using the Psychopathy Checklist-Revised (Hare, 2003) while childhood physical maltreatment was assessed using the Conflict Tactic Scale (Straus, 1979). Results revealed that compared to normal controls, unsuccessful psy
