Decoding the role and regulatory network of the NcSnRK2 gene family in cold stress response of Nymphaea candida.

The white water lily (Nymphaea candida), native to the high-altitude regions of Xinjiang, China, serves as an excellent model for studying cold tolerance in aquatic plants. This study explored the sucrose non-fermenting related protein kinase 2 (SnRK2) family genes in Nymphaea candida (NcSnRK2), establishing a functional link between NcSnRK2 and cold tolerance. Phylogenetic analysis grouped NcSnRK2 family members into three evolutionarily conserved clades. NcSnRK2 proteins exhibited unique subcellular localization in the nucleus and plasma membrane, potentially compensating for regulatory defi

A systematic review and meta-analysis of cold exposure and cardiovascular disease outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Cold exposure has been considered an essential risk factor for the global disease burden, while its role in cardiovascular diseases is still underappreciated. The increase in frequency and duration of extreme cold weather events like cold spells makes it an urgent task to evaluate the effects of ambient cold on different types of cardiovascular disease and to understand the factors contributing to the population's vulnerability. METHODS: In the present systematic review and meta-analysis, we searched PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane. We included original research that explored the ass…

[Treatment of accidental hypothermia].

New knowledge about accidental hypothermia acquired in recent years may simplify treatment and aid the evaluation of prognosis. Evidence of death or severe collapse due to the feared afterdrop has not been published. Afterdrop is a phenomenon of conductive heat loss. Evaluation of rewarming techniques shows that results from forced air rewarming techniques are equivalent to or better than results from invasive rewarming methods, except for rewarming with cardiopulmonary bypass. In hypothermia the most important differential diagnosis is death. Patients who are cold and could be resuscitated mu

A patient with the highly suspected B cell lymphoma accompanied by the erythrocytes cold agglutination: Case report.

RATIONALE: Cold agglutinins are related with B cell lymphoproliferative disorder and lymphoma, and can agglutinate red blood cells (RBCs) at an optimum temperature of 3-4°C, which is the undergoing cause of RBCs cold agglutination. RBC cold agglutination may lead to an extreme abnormality of RBC parameters of complete blood count (CBC). PATIENT CONCERNS: The present study reports a case of an old patient with severe infectious fever and anemia presenting extremely abnormal levels of RBC parameters in CBC and a sand-like appearance of blood on tube wall. The validating tests indicated the pres

Lupus - the cold, hard facts.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a multisystem chronic disease with a multitude of clinical presentations. We review and synthesize how an environmental insult (exposure to extreme cold for a short duration) and endogenous (antiphospholipid antibody syndrome, SLE vasculitis) insults in a susceptible young female with lupus (peripheral arterial disease, smoking, SLE) led to a perfect storm resulting in catastrophic injuries (frostbite).

Transcriptomic profiling reveals immunometabolic gene regulation during a 24-h cold exposure survival simulation in humans.

Prolonged cold exposure imposes substantial physiological and operational demands; however, the molecular mechanisms supporting human adaptation to sustained cold remain poorly defined. In this first-in-human study, we conducted genome-wide transcriptomic profiling of peripheral blood leukocytes from eight healthy adult males during a 24-h whole body cold survival simulation (7.5°C). Blood samples were collected at four standardized time points to characterize the dynamics of gene expression during continuous cold stress. Despite the clear physiological strain, the global leukocyte transcripto

Exploring the short-term effects of extreme temperatures on tuberculosis incidence in Shantou, China: a Coastal City perspective.

OBJECTIVE: Coastal cities, due to their proximity to coastlines and unique climatic conditions, face growing challenges from extreme tempera … temperatures and TB incidence, with the impact peaking at a lag of 27 days after exposure. Notably, extreme cold temperatures led to a temporary decrease in TB incidence with a lag of 1-2 days. Subgroup analysis indicated that males had a notably higher risk of TB under extreme temperature conditions compared to females. Additionally, individuals aged 65 years …

Prolonged stable hypothermia during a 10-hour cold open-water marathon swim.

Marathon open-water swimming presents extreme thermophysiological challenges, particularly in cold environments. This case report describes continuous core temperature data from a solo crossing of New Zealand's Foveaux Strait, an infamously cold (13°C -14°C), turbulent open-water swim. A 52-year-old male swimmer (body mass index, 27.9 kg m-2; body fat, 18%) completed the 37 km swim in 9 h 52 min under standard marathon swimming rules (no wetsuit). Core temperature (measured via an ingestible thermometer pill) decreased rapidly after immersion, falling from 37.9°C to <35.0°C within 50 min. The

In situ deep-sea surface-enhanced Raman scattering sensor reveals cyanide as a key factor in cold seep nitrogen cycling.

Deep-sea hydrothermal vents and cold seeps, typical ecosystems characterized by abundant carbon but limited nitrogen, support thriving microbial activities. The source of nitrogen has long been a key focus in scientific research. Although cultivation experiments have confirmed the presence of diverse nitrogen-fixing microorganisms, direct in situ evidence has been lacking. Therefore, a deep-sea in situ surface-enhanced Raman scattering sensor has been developed. It can adapt to extreme environment (≥350°C and ≥2000-m depth and LOD < 10-7 M) and has excellent deep-sea application potential. Cru

Arctic introgression and chromatin regulation facilitated rapid Qinghai-Tibet Plateau colonization by an avian predator.

The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP), possesses a climate as cold as that of the Arctic, and also presents uniquely low oxygen concentrations and intense ultraviolet (UV) radiation. QTP animals have adapted to these extreme conditions, but whether they obtained genetic variations from the Arctic during cold adaptation, and how genomic mutations in non-coding regions regulate gene expression under hypoxia and intense UV environment, remain largely unknown. Here, we assemble a high-quality saker falcon genome and resequence populations across Eurasia. We identify female-biased hybridization with Arct

Environmental salinity differentiates responses to acute hypothermal stress in milkfish.

Global warming has led to an increase in the frequency of cold extremes, causing significant economic losses in aquaculture, particularly in subtropical regions. Milkfish (Chanos chanos) holds significant importance in aquaculture within subtropical Asian regions. Despite milkfish's ability to tolerate varying salinity levels, frequent cold snaps associated with extreme weather events have caused substantial mortality. Understanding the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying cold stress-induced cell death is crucial for developing effective strategies to mitigate such losses. Given the p

The Neanderthal face is not cold adapted.

Many morphological features of the Pleistocene fossil hominin Homo neanderthalensis, including the reputed large size of its paranasal sinuses, have been interpreted as adaptations to extreme cold, as some Neanderthals lived in Europe during glacial periods. This interpretation of sinus evolution rests on two assumptions: that increased craniofacial pneumatization is an adaptation to lower ambient temperatures, and that Neanderthals have relatively large sinuses. Analysis of humans, other primates, and rodents, however, suggests that the first assumption is suspect; at least the maxillary sinu…
