Development and validation of machine learning models to improve prediction of surgical duration for cataract surgeries.

INTRODUCTION: Operating theatres significantly contribute to hospital expenditures. Traditional surgery scheduling, which is often based on manual methods or historical averages, lacks precision. This inefficiency impacts cost, timely care delivery and patient experience, particularly in high-volume surgeries. To address this, we aimed to create data-driven predictive models for cataract surgery durations, a largely unexplored area in local literature. METHODS: We utilised supervised machine learning models, including linear regression, random forest and extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost). P

The machine learning prediction model of non-alcoholic fatty liver; the role of hydrogen and methane breath tests.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is now the leading cause of global chronic liver disease, affecting approximately 32.4% of the population in various regions and imposing healthcare and economic burdens. The gold standard for the diagnosis of NAFLD, such as liver biopsy, has numerous limitations in large-scale screening. Recent studies have explored the use of machine learning to diagnose NAFLD. In this study, we investigated the effect of the lactulose breath test (LBT) on a machine-learning model for predicting NAFLD. The input variables for machine learning included three combinatio

Comparison between linear regression and four different machine learning methods in selecting risk factors for osteoporosis in a Chinese female aged cohort.

BACKGROUND: Population aging is emerging as an increasingly acute challenge for countries around the world. One particular manifestation of this phenomenon is the impact of osteoporosis on individuals and national health systems. Previous studies of risk factors for osteoporosis were conducted using traditional statistical methods, but more recent efforts have turned to machine learning approaches. Most such efforts, however, treat the target variable (bone mineral density [BMD] or fracture rate) as a categorical one, which provides no quantitative information. The present study uses five diff

An optimized ensemble learning model for interpretable and efficient obesity classification.

Obesity is a major health challenge resulting from the interaction of genetic, behavioral, and environmental factors. In recent years, several conventional statistical, mathematical methods, and machine learning techniques have been proposed for obesity classification and have generated encouraging results. However, their performance is not ideal, and more work is needed in the field. This study proposes an optimized stacking machine learning classifier (SMLC) for obesity classification. The SMLC model intelligently combines a meta-heuristic model, machine learning models, and deep learning to

Prediction of Snacking Behavior Involving Snacks Having High Levels of Saturated Fats, Salt, or Sugar Using Only Information on Previous Instances of Snacking: Survey- and App-Based Study.

BACKGROUND: Consuming high amounts of foods or beverages with high levels of saturated fats, salt, or sugar (HFSS) can be harmful for health. Many snacks fall into this category (HFSS snacks). However, the palatability of these snacks means that people can sometimes struggle to reduce their intake. Machine learning algorithms could help in predicting the likely occurrence of HFSS snacking so that just-in-time adaptive interventions can be deployed. However, HFSS snacking data have certain characteristics, such as sparseness and incompleteness, which make snacking prediction a challenge for mac

Predicting postoperative trauma-induced coagulopathy in patients with severe injuries by machine learning.

Trauma-induced coagulopathy (TIC) has a high incidence in patients with severe trauma. Patients who develop TIC usually have a poor prognosis, characterised by increased organ dysfunction, susceptibility to sepsis, and high mortality. Nonetheless, there are still few studies specifically focusing on postoperative TIC in severely traumatic patients. Therefore, the aim of this study was to construct a machine learning model for early identification of people at high risk of postoperative TIC. This retrospective analysis included data of severe trauma patients undergoing surgical treatment from J
