Gas gangrene panophthalmitis. A case from Greenland.

A case of clostridium perfringens gas gangrene panophthalmitis developed after a penetrating eye injury. The affected eye became amaurotic, but the panophthalmitis was controlled by minimal surgical debridement and systemic antibiotic therapy with penicillin, fucidic acid and metronidazole. Elective enucleation was performed 15 days after the trauma for cosmetic reasons. The enucleated eye was examined histopathologically and showed massive retinal necrosis but no signs of bacteriae.

Does vitreous haemorrhage and calcification lead to increased risk of enucleation in advanced retinoblastoma?

PURPOSE: To explore whether varying degrees of vitreous haemorrhage (VH) and calcification act as risk factors for enucleation in patients with advanced retinoblastoma (RB). METHODS: Advanced RB was defined by the international classification of RB (Philadelphia version). Basic information for retinoblastoma patients diagnosed as groups D and E in our hospital between January 2017 and June 2022 was reviewed by logistics regression models. Additionally, a correlation analysis was performed, excluding variables with a VIF (variance inflation factor) >10 from the multivariate analysis. RESULTS:

Massive anterior chamber involvement after intra-arterial chemotherapy for retinoblastoma: ultrasound biomicroscopy and histopathology.

This case report highlights the usefulness of Ultrasound Biomicroscopy (UBM) in a case of retinoblastoma which showed massive anterior chamber involvement after treatment with intra-arterial chemotherapy. UBM was used to document tumour pseudohypopion, cells in the aqueous humor, implanted clusters of cells on the corneal endothelium, iris nodules, lens capsule deposits and ciliary body invasion. The UBM data, compared with the histopathologic analysis, performed on eye tissue, after enucleation of the affected eye, revealed a significant concordance. UBM may represent an important diagnostic

Malignancy in the blind painful eye--report of two cases and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Few cases of malignant tumors arising in a blind painful eye have previously been described. We described two cases of a blind painful eye containing an unsuspected tumor, which were enucleated to relieve the pain. CASE PRESENTATIONS: Case 1: A 57 year-old Caucasian man presented with recurrent orbital cellulitis and endophthalmitis in the left eye (OS). The OS was blind and painful and an enucleation was performed showing a uveal melanoma by histopathological exam. Case 2: A 54 year-old Caucasian man with previous history of a rhegmatogenous retinal detachment in his left eye pre

Prognosis of perforating eye injuries with intraocular foreign bodies.

The long-term results of 95 consecutive eyes with a perforating eye injury and an intraocular foreign body (IOFB) treated with or without pars plana vitrectomy are reported. With the mean follow-up time of 30.0 months (median 22.8 months) 10 eyes (11%) were enucleated and another 17% became blind (visual acuity less than 0.05). The enucleation rate was considerably decreased and the visual outcome improved as compared with previous studies in Finland. The visual outcome was affected unfavourably by posterior location of the perforation, blunt injury, prolapse of intraocular tissue and poor ini

Painful Eye Caused by Neoplasm: A Case Report and Review.

Ocular discomfort due to cancer treatments is common and typically treated with supportive care. For example, dry eye caused by some chemotherapies is managed with ocular lubricants. However, managing severe eye pain caused by tumor is challenging. We describe the case of a 63-year-old man with eye pain caused by basal cell carcinoma of the face with orbital invasion-an uncommon finding. Severe eye pain persisted, despite escalation of the patient's analgesic regimen. He was referred to an ocular oncologist by his palliative care physician and underwent surgical removal of the left eyeball and

[Epithelial giant inclusion cyst 50 years after enucleation without orbital implant].

BACKGROUND: Conjunctival cyst formation following enucleation may occur in 3% to 7% of patients receiving orbital implants, especially secondary implants. We present a patient with a giant epithelial inclusion cyst of the anophthalmic orbit 50 years after enucleation without orbital implant. PATIENT: A 54-year-old male presented with increasing proptosis of the ocular prosthesis, shallowing of the inferior fornix, a palpable orbital mass, and difficulty in retaining the ocular prosthesis. At the age of 1 year enucleation of the right eye without orbital implant was performed following perfora

The traumatized eye.

Injuries to the eye, both contusional and perforating, have a considerable visual morbidity not the least of which is a cosmetically unacceptable eye. Meticulous primary surgical repair and judicious secondary reconstruction of the eye may not only preserve visual functions but substantially improve the patient's appearance. Most cosmetic problems follow perforating eye injuries and include corneal leucomata, iris and pupillary abnormalities, cataract, phthisis bulbi and enucleation. Oculo-motor abnormalities, particularly divergent squint, are common where substantial loss of vision has occur

Enucleation in psychosis associated with aqueductal stenosis.

Reports of self-enucleation are frequent in medical literature, but cases of enucleation towards another are rare. We report the case of a man, 20 years of age, who suffered from psychosis with hydrocephalus and aqueductal stenosis that required a forensic psychiatric investigation to ascertain whether he was of unsound mind when he assaulted and enucleated the right eye of an officer and led to the surgical enucleation of the victim's left eye. Based on his clinical interviews and hospitalization record, we conclude that at the time of the assault, he was suffering from a delusional disorder

Risk factors for endophthalmitis requiring evisceration or enucleation.

Endophthalmitis has devastating sequelae resulting in blindness and even loss of eyeball. Although the prognosis of endophthalmitis has much improved with the advances of antibiotics and vitreoretinal surgery, of the number of patients that required evisceration or enucleation is still significant. We retrospectively reviewed the charts of 210 eyes of 210 patients with endophthalmitis andcompared the group that required evisceration or enucleation with those that received salvaging therapies. Regression analysis was used to identify the risk factors for evisceration or enucleation. Thirty eyes

Diagnosis and treatment of uveal melanoma.

Most malignant melanomas in the ocular region arise in the uveal tract (iris, ciliary body, and choroid). Uveal melanoma generally has characteristic clinical features and the diagnosis can usually be made by an experienced ophthalmologist using slit lamp biomicroscopy or indirect ophthalmoscopy. Ancillary studies such as fluorescein angiography, ultrasonography, magnetic resonance imaging, and fine needle biopsy can occasionally be used to establish the diagnosis in atypical cases. Today, most affected patients are managed by specialists in ocular oncology. The management of uveal melanoma ha
